In the process, programs are working to reduce traffic congestion and improve health and the environment, making communities more livable for everyone.

Jane's Walk May 1

Sacramento is joining nearly 60 other North American cities by hosting its first Jane's Walk focusing on livable cities on May 1. Jane's Walk began in 2007 in Canada as a community walk to get people talking about their neighborhoods and city planning that can increase quality of life. The series of walks quickly blossomed and spread to this country. In 2010, Sacramento is among at least 29 U.S. cities, nearly as many in Canada and a few international ones scheduled to hold the free walking tours the first weekend in May. The walks were created to honor the life and work of Jane Jacobs. An American author, activist and urban thinker, Jacobs promoted the idea of the urban village to main

Spandex and helmet-wearing cyclists dominated the Capitol as they circulated from booth to booth after valeting their bikes at BikeFest 2009. As part of a monthlong celebration of bicyclists and Bike to Work Day on Thursday, bike vendors, transit companies and biking teams from around the area set up shop on the steps of the Capitol to inform and encourage both avid and potential cyclists of the benefits of biking and how to get involved in Sacramento's growing bike scene. "Bike Fest is a great way to promote health and wellness in the community and I'm always happy to see so many cyclists adding up their miles...," said Jennifer Lemos, a representative for Sacramento County Parks and Re
