I moved to Midtown Sacramento in January 2007 from Washington DC. My neighborhood is a wonderful place to live – there is a vibrancy and energy unlike any other place in the Sacramento area. Theaters, restaurants, churches, bars, stores, clubs, and galleries provide a great deal of cultural capital and are one of the main reasons I love where I live. However, there is something that I find comically annoying: complaints about parking. Are there times when finding parking in Midtown can be difficult? Yes. Is this one of the major problems facing our city? No. A recently announced pilot program will create changes to street parking during Second Saturday in Midtown. The three-month trial wi
It's coming to that time of year again when people reunite with the outdoors, shedding the winter clothes and holiday pounds in a zest for activities under the sun. While some folks prefer to stay inside, others are ready to lather on the sunscreen. The Sacramento Press hit the streets around McKinley Park, William Land Park and surrounding neighborhoods this Easter weekend to hear what locals consider their favorite outdoor activities. Golden 1 Membership-Relationship Specialist Sarah Jones, 25, said she enjoys walking her three dogs with her husband at McKinley Park because of the exercise for both the dogs and her and her husband. "We will usually do two laps or so. It's good for th
Anyone looking to discover all of the nooks and crannies of Sacramento can join the Sacramento Walking Sticks, a 27-year-old club that organizes year-round walks all over Sacramento. The AVA is a walking organization with more than 300 clubs in the United States. The Walking Sticks organize walks in the Midtown and downtown areas as well as surrounding areas such as Rancho Cordova and Elk Grove. The walks are non-competitive, and each person can set his or her own pace. People will often walk with dogs and kids in strollers. The distance is typically 5

Where should we spend money on transportation as our region continues to grow? The Sacramento Area Council of Governments (SACOG) is hosting workshops throughout October to gather input from residents on transportation and land use planning in the Sacramento region. SACOG is a regional planning agency for Sacramento, El Dorado, Placer, Sutter, Yolo, and Yuba counties. As part of the transportation planning process, SACOG updates the Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP) every four years. The MTP includes investments in transit, freeways, roadways, and bike and pedestrian improvements. In an effort to plan thoughtfully for all regional travel needs, SACOG will host nine public workshops
The Dude abides. Twelve years after cult classic "The Big Lebowski" starring Jeff Bridges and John Goodman hit theaters, fans are still celebrating the film’s unpredictable and sometimes confusing plot, startling brute violence and hysterical, expletive-riddled dialogue, prime for quoting. Marilyn’s on K Street hosted The Big Lebowski Fiesta Friday night for these fans, and the White Russians and robes were suitably flowing. Marilyn’s deserves some party-throwing props. The costume contest brought all the favorite Big L characters to life: the White Russian won for best female costume, and The Jesus won the male competition. The cute female in the short furry white dress and high-heeled b
InAlliance will host the 2nd Annual Gold Rush Poker Run & Walk on Saturday, October 9, 2010 at the El Dorado Trail in Placerville to benefit programs for people with developmental disabilities. These cards will create a poker hand that will be worth raffle tickets at the finish line celebration! The number of raffle tick
Do you remember the feeling of riding a bike for the very first time? I do. I can recall the feeling of freedom, of gliding through the air under my own power, of the wind rushing past my hair and face. That was a magical feeling that can only happen once – the first time I learned to do something. But more than that, it is one my best childhood discoveries and memories. My entire body was uplifted and carried magically through space and time, and I felt that the whole world was mine and mine alone, until I crashed because I didn't know how to stop the bike. Do you remember the first hard crash on your bike, leaving your knees bloody and your palms numbed and bruised from hitting the pav
On November 21, 2009, the Sacramento Building Healthy Communities collaborative hosted two events in Oak Park and South Sacramento, designed to educate communities on the 10-year Building Healthy Communities (BHC) process. Earlier this year, the California Endowment awarded funding to 14 communities over ten years as part of their Building Healthy Communities program. This effort was designed to infuse at least $10 million into each community to bring about systemic change. The efforts are to be driven by four goals: • Health systems are family-centered and prioritize prevention. • Schools anchor communities, promote healthy behaviors and are a gateway for resources and services. • Human
Tours of any sort within downtown Sacramento are in limited supply. However, those looking for an alternative, lively and up-close view of the historic grid can sign up for Hot Walkin' Nights, the weekly walking tour that's scheduled to tread through downtown Wednesday evening. Organized by the Sacramento Walking Sticks, California's largest American Volkssport Association (AVA) walking group, Hot Walkin' Nights tours various parts of Sacramento County every Wednesday evening throughout June, July and August. This Wednesday, the place of interest is downtown, allowing people to come and go as they choose during the predetermined 6.2-mile route. Beginning at 6 p.m., participants will meet
Distance running is a metaphor for life. Imagine running a full marathon. Your physical strength, built by training, gives you the energy to push through the course. You feel energized until about mile 13. You start feeling pain, but it is within your expectations. Then you hit the wall at mile 20. You feel like there is no more fuel left in your body and your legs feel like steel. You start hearing a voice, saying, “You can’t go any further. You did enough. Quit and rest!” For the last six miles, you fight with this evil voice. But you also hear another voice, “No, no, don’t quit. You can do it. You have come this far and the goal is near.” This part of you miraculously pushes you to the
I have always loved the alleyways in the central city and wanted to document the amazing gems that lived just a few steps of the beaten path. The original shot is from the main road and the following are some of the items I chose to shoot. I plan to repeat this process for many streets in the central city. After this first post I will not name the street and I would love to see if the community here on sacpress.com can figure out were each weeks post comes from. Week one is 10th and Q
