California State University, Sacramento (CSUS) put on its game face this Thursday as it went up against undefeated, 11 win, Northern Arizona. CSUS’ current ranking was 5-8. Thursday’s match also marked CSUS’ opener game into the Big Sky conference; Arizona arrived with an already 2-0 Big Sky lead. The match started promptly at 7pm with the national anthem and a half-filled stadium. Low attendance did nothing to impede the noise factor in the gym. Though they were few, loud fans filled the stadium with hoots and whistles as the volleyball match started. Sac State’s cheerleaders and dance team were in full force with green and gold pompons, while nearby parents applauded and stomped their f
Dodgeball and volleyball, that is. And for a good cause! Metro EDGE , Sacramento’s leading network of 40-and-under young professionals, is excited to announce its second annual “A Day on the EDGE” fundraiser. The event will feature two dodgeball and volleyball tournaments complete with great music, food, and drinks – all to benefit Junior Achievement of Sacramento. Metro EDGE, a program of the Sacramento Metro Chamber, identifies and supports a local nonprofit organization through volunteerism and philanthropic giving every year. For 2011, the group has chosen to support Junior Achievement of Sacramento, an educational organization that teaches financial literacy, entrepreneurship, wo
For many of us, winter spells hibernation. A lot of staying under the covers, accompanied by wine and movies. Sure we get some stretching in while reaching for the snooze button, or maybe a little cardio jumping over that puddle. Most of us enjoy doing a little activity each day, but, unfortunately, will be faced with rain clouds, brisk winds and short days during the next couple of months. Strolling the park outdoors, walking to the store, or even walking to work, aren’t ideal options in the freezing temperatures and wet streets. One solution to the winter funk can be found right here in Sacramento, with XOSO Co-Ed Sport and Social League – a league that includes outdoor and indoor kic
Last Tuesday night, Fong Nation emerged victorious over the Flaming Balls in the Xoso Sport & Social League Bumper league showdown of the top two teams. It came down to the final week of the season to determine who would match up in the finals, with both the Drunk Sets and Sac Attack failing to advance despite finishing with 5-3 season records. In the finals, Fong Nation prevailed, avenging their regular season loss to the Flaming Balls. After losing 2-1 in the regular season, they took control of the 2nd game early and went on to win the first two games of the best of 3 match. In the Spiker League, the #1 seeded Barbie All-Stars matched up against the #4 Birthday Sets. Just two weeks ea
Led by California State University, Sacramento, junior Erin Kirby, who racked up a match-high 16 kills and a career-high .500 hitting percentage, the Hornets easily swept the San Jose State Spartans (25-20, 25-15, 25-17) in non-conference play Tuesday evening at Colberg Court. The win makes three straight for the Hornets, and they improve to an overall 5-3 record. The Spartans are off to a slow start this season, dropping to 1-6. Faced with consistent serving, passing and defense from a determined Sac State team, the Spartans started with a promising first set but were unable to hit their stride. The Hornets posted 10 service aces and a season-high hitting percentage (.378), and San Jose
The Sacramento State Hornets were outmatched in their non-conference home opener on Wednesday, falling to the Santa Clara Broncos in a three-set sweep (25-20, 26-24, 30-28) at Colberg Court. The Hornets played without the services of two probable starters (middle hitter Maddison Thivierge and setter Hannh Hettings) and were bested by a tough Santa Clara offense in kills (50-38), hitting percentage (.197-.164), assists (42-37) and digs (70-63). Strong performances by Sacramento State sophomore Janelle Currey (15 kills, 10 digs, career-high 5 blocks) and junior Kelsey Elston (8 kills, four blocks, and a .421 hitting percentage) were not enough to give the Hornets the edge. Sacramento St
Last night wrapped up another fun XOSO coed volleyball season! Thanks to everyone who played and made it so successful. We had two championship match ups last night. In the Bumper division, Serves You Right squared off against Block Party to settle, once and for all, who was the better team. Earlier in the season, Serves You Right won two out of three matches against the second seed Block Party. Last night, Block Party raced to early leads in the first two games but Serves You Right battled back to win them both in thrilling fashion. The second game was as close as you can get with Serves You Right clinching the championship. In the Spiker division, Spiked Punch was going for a repeat c
