Vélo & Vintage bicycle fashion show: photos

The 2nd annual Vélo & Vintage Fashion Show was held at Hot Italian Saturday night in Sacramento.  The show is as much about bicycles as fashion. Lorena Beightler of Sac Cycle Chic founded the event to highlight "urban cycling as a smart, stylish and fashionable mode of transport." Kari Shipman of Juniper James organized the event with Beightler. Models attired in vintage clothing sourced from local boutiques rode a variety of vintage and newer bicycles into the restaurant and onto the runway. Each of the ten models showed three different looks ranging from "daytime" to "night" and ending with a "crazy" look that included a wild mishmash of styles, smeared makeup, and plenty of attitude.

Launching Sac Style

One of the true gems of Launch, a Vchle Magazine event that took place Saturday, was the innovative stylings of both the fashion designers and those in attendance. The event, dedicated to Sacramento's fashion and design talent, explored the question: What is Sac style? "Who knows?" Mel Eligon, store manager of Cuffs, asked. "Style has everything to do with the individual, and there are a plethora of individualities here. This sounds generic, but the D.I.Y. thing, seeking out unique pieces, is really big. In big cities like L.A. and San Francisco, certain things are put in your face for what is fashionable. But because we are a small town, it's easy for us to make an extra effort to look

Buff Castle packs a musical punch.

Driving through midtown, there’s always been one store front that has stood out to me. As someone with slight type-A tendencies, the sign outside of Buff Castle has always driven me nuts! I wasn’t ever sure if it was even a currently open store, or if some kids had just spray painted the outside of the building. Since I was meandering, I decided to finally check it out. If you’re looking for reasonably priced retro (80’s and back) clothes / costumes, they have them. The store isn’t packed to the brim, but what they do have is affordable. According to Liz, the owner, pretty much everything is under $20. Sweet! Although they don’t do consignment straight across, they do pride themselves on

Classic Sacramento radio station stickers

My wife and I spent our Saturday afternoon cleaning out the shed in our back yard. During this process I discovered the sticker collection she got while attending concerts in Sacramento in the middle to late 1980's. I really enjoyed seeing the dated graphic design and trying to guess what music these stations might have played. What staions are missing that were huge during the 80's in Sacramento?
