Designs for an outdoor amphitheater, an open-air plaza and a walk of fame were announced Tuesday as the top three contenders in the Think Big Sacramento Citizen Architect competition – a contest to design a portion of the planned entertainment sports complex. The contest, which began in July, has been touted by the Think Big Sacramento committee as a way for the public to “leave its legacy” on the new complex, according to a press release. Athletes > Cancer

Celebrity athletes are just like you and I. Well, maybe not just like you and I, but similar. They are like richer, better-dressed, more-fit versions of us (Or, in Scot Pollard's case, just richer). The similarities were on display at the second annual Athletes vs. Cancer golf tournament at the Woodcreek Golf Club, hosted by Matt Barnes on Saturday. Barnes founded the AVC to honor his mother, who passed away from cancer in 2007. Their mission is to "support research, create awareness, provide screening opportunities and deliver support to cancer patients." The tournament featured many athletes with local ties, among them former Kings Chris Webber, Scot Pollard, Bobby Jackson, Doug Chri

Heart of a Lion: WEC 48

Once again, World Extreme Cagefighting brought a night of hard-hitting, action-packed fights to Sacramento on Saturday night. Leonard Garcia vs. Chan Sung Jung unexpectedly stole the show with three five-minute rounds of nonstop back-and-forth punches that resembled a scene out of the “Rocky” movies in what might have been the best fight I have ever seen. Arco Arena was filled with anticipation, and the energy could only be matched to the Sacramento Kings’ old playoff days. The only difference was this time, Sacramento showed up to cheer local hero and former WEC featherweight champion Urijah Faber. Faber once again walked out to his patented entrance song, “California Love,” as thousan

NBA ROY Award: What’s taking so long?

While 16 teams battle to reach the NBA Finals, nine awards are handed out during the playoffs. So far, six awards have been given out, but fans of the Sacramento Kings, Golden State Warriors and Milwaukee Bucks ask the question: When is the Rookie of the Year (ROY) award going to be announced? When the award was given out last year, it was given to the Chicago Bulls’ Derrick Rose one day before Game 3 at Chicago in the first round of the playoffs. Although ROY contenders Tyreke Evans of the Kings and Stephen Curry of the Warriors aren’t in the playoffs, Brandon Jennings’ Bucks have already played Game 3 in Milwaukee. Unlike Rose last year, Jennings didn’t get a trophy. This seemingly

It might just be the fight of the year. World Extreme Cagefighting is taking the giant step into the game of Pay Per View events on April 24 in Sacramento at Arco Arena with help from former champ and local favorite, Urijah Faber. Faber, a former Division I UC Davis wrestler and a well seasoned MMA fighter (23-3) will have his hands full when he takes on the Brazilian Jujitsu expert and well-matched Jose Aldo, the current WEC featherweight champion in what many say will be the fight of the year. Adding to the hype surrounding the event, Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson declared April 22 “Urijah Faber day” at Thursday's press conference at Arco Arena.  WEC is banking on Faber vs. Aldo
