Through their use of Twitter, Facebook, Youtube and other social media tools, many local charities have spread their message, raised funds and increased public awareness of their cause in order to promote social change. In the hopes of spreading their stories and inspiring other philanthropic organizations to do the same, four local charities will be conducting a panel discussion at the Sacramento Social Media Club’s “Social Media Best Practices for Charities” on Tuesday, Nov. 8 at 7 p.m. at the Urban Hive. Summer has come and gone but crowds at Second Saturday still remain large. Second Saturday events have grown in popularity and other communities participate in Second and Third Saturday art events. During fall several cities stop their art walks. Folsom and El Dorado Hills had their last Second Saturday of the year in September and October respectively. Popularity of similar events in smaller towns continues to grow. Attendance and art displays expand in the smaller venues but none of these can compare to the popularity of Midtown’s event. The Urban Hive on 1931 H Street was the site for a fashion “Design Vendetta”. Four student designers competed for a spot in the upcoming Designing Dreams Fashion Show in August. Rodrigo Trujillo Calderón, Jacqueline Anaya, Samuel R. Parkinson and Linda Vang competed at Saturday night’s event. Each student designer was given the same amount of fabric and other items to design and create an outfit in an hour. The designers had their own sewing machines and were assigned a model to work with. As people began to arrive at the Urban Hive they were able to enjoy some hors d'oeuvres and drinks. A Grand Opening for T2 Performance Solutions was held this Friday at the Urban Hive on H and 20th Street. This Launch Celebration included music by Clemon Charles and Michael Wilson. Featured artist was Raphael Delgado. Delicious food was provided by Mulvaney’s B&L and Perry Creek Winery provided several fine wine selections. April 16 marked the arrival of TEDx in Sacramento, bringing a “TED-like experience” to our area. What is TED? TED stands for “Technology, Education, Design.” It is a small nonprofit organization devoted to “Ideas Worth Spreading.” Started in 1984, its purpose has spread to include an annual U.S. conference in Long Beach as well as a TEDGlobal conference in the United Kingdom, a TEDTalks online video site, an annual TED Prize, a nationwide local program called TEDx and more. When Levi and Jessie Benkert from local development firm LJ Urban decided to leave their Midtown business and pack up their families to start an orphanage in Ethiopia, something had to be done with their workspace until 2010.
