"In the Land of Blood and Honey" and "A Separation" Two movies open in Sacramento this week that offer glimpses into very different cultures and places, as two couples find themselves in desperate circumstances. In one, a Bosnian woman and a Serbian meet on the eve of the Bosnian war. In the other, an Iranian husband and wife struggle to come to terms with conflicting opportunities and duties. “In the Land of Blood and Honey” tells the story of Alja and Danijel who first meet in a night club and then again later in a camp, commanded by Danijel, where Bosnian women are taken and used by Serbian soldiers. The basic premise is built around this relationship, one that might have been quite o
Independent filmmaker Isaac Piche' has scheduled a test screening in the Sacramento area for his first full feature film Dam California. The name alone suggests controversy. Although the film is focused on water as the necessity that it is, Piche' chose a course that intertwines real life events and fictional characters to make his point and tagline, "Don't Mess With Our Water." This film confronts issues between farmers, the endangered species act, and the corruption that would choose power over the balance of life. “This is still a work-in-progress” says 25 year old Piche’. “Dam California’ is a relevant, current issue based narrative film. Russ Solomon, the iconic founder of Tower Records, officially retired from the music business Saturday. But it was clear he hasn't retired from the hearts and minds of many Sacramentans. More than 200 people turned out on a scorching afternoon for Solomon’s retirement party at the corner of 16th Street and Broadway — the longtime site of his Tower Records store and now the home of Dimple Records. The 84-year-old record store mogul built a multimillion-dollar chain that spanned seven decades, with stores on three continents. Guitarist Skip Maggiora, owner of Skip's Music stores, thanked Solomon for "putting music into millions of lives," including his. "He had a passionate way of doing b
If you live anywhere near the Roseville area then you know that not only this town, but this entire region shuts down around 7 o'clock. For year's your evening "hang out" choices consisted of A) Denny's, B) Mel's, C) the random bar or D) your own living room. Residents of this area seem to be forever relegated to driving all the way Downtown Sac for some type of nightlife that isn't the above mentioned choices. That is, until now. Recently, a ragtag group of people under the leadership of Hector Marquez (A local filmmaker native to Roseville) have decided to start screening classic films in Roseville's iconic Tower Theater (not to be confused with Downtown Sacramento's Tower Theater). Th

It has been a topic of discussion in the area for years, could the Tower and Crest Theaters have to close? With new giant movie chains in the area and the economy how it is, it’s a very real possibility. They have always seemed to be on the brink of closing, the Crest has closed before in the 80s, and the marquee on the Tower reads "savethetowertheater.org". So this threat must be pretty real. A large banner on the Tower reads "SAVE THE ALHAMBRA", that is; the huge gorgeous theater that the city was unable to buy and save in 1973, it was soon demolished and made way for the Safeway that resides on Alhambra blvd today. The only thing that remains of the Alhambra is a fountain on the
