The Old City Cemetery Committee, in conjunction with the Sojourner Truth Multicultural Arts Museum in Sacramento, will offer a free tour of the Historic City Cemetery at 10 a.m. on Feb. 18 to honor Sacramento’s black pioneers. “We’ll be featuring a dozen or so fascinating people from Sacramento’s history who were African-American or who affected their experience,” said Dr. Bob LaPerriere, founding member of the Old City Cemetery Committee. Several guest docents from the Sojourner Truth Museum will be positioned along the tour to speak about Sacramento’s black pioneers. Eric Bradner, volunteer docent with the Old City Cemetery Committee, will lead the tour. Among the stories he will featu

Brulte, Do you remember our visit to the Capitol?

My close parent once suggested that I attend the California State Capitol Museum tour, because I was so obviously enamored with political pluralism. Eccentric and famous because I was republican, I resolved to complete a dream in a cup of brew. There before the mainstream again was a ambassador and mutual supporter seeking the approval of the pub Rubicon and its web address. Fortunately, the California State Capitol Museum has made assessable to me and your public, local tours. And its free admission 10:00am-4:00pm Monday thru Sunday isn’t a bad choice. Beginning out of the basement in room B-27 is your ease of tour reservation. One does suppose, there are different reasons we are intere

Review: Conan O'Brien Can't Stop

by Tony Sheppard Capitol Weekly Conan O’Brien Can’t Stop Directed by Rodman Flender Last summer, Sacramento’s Memorial Auditorium was one of the venues for Conan O’Brien’s “The Legally Prohibited From Being Funny on Television Tour.” That tour is now the focus of the behind the scenes documentary “Conan O’Brien Can’t Stop” – a somewhat unflinching look at an attempt to make show business lemonade from a deluge of unwanted lemons (or perhaps, in some opinions, a single unwanted Leno). For those who live in caves, go to bed at 9pm, or go to bed at 9pm in caves, last year saw messy contract negotiations over late night programming at NBC. Years earlier, O’Brien had been promised the holy

Psychedelic Rockers Portugal. The Man Perform at Harlow's

As I walked into Harlow's, I tried to push aside preconceived notions about the kind of band that does an all-ages show at a nightclub (strike one), has a Facebook page that insists they're not a band but rather "a movement” (strike two and three) and inserts a period into the middle of their name. Portugal. The Man was good, though. And so was their opening musician, Telekinesis. Telekinesis is the alter ego of singer, drummer, songwriter (etc.) Michael Benjamin Lerner, who is accompanied by Cody Votolato and Jason Narducy while on tour. Lerner has worked extensively with Death Cab for Cutie guitarist Chris Walla, and the influence was easy to recognize in Telekinesis’ song “Rust.” Tho

Lite Brite shows shine

The crowd's ears were ringing, which only made them crave more. The cheers were so loud you'd never have guessed there were only about 40 people in the room. Don't let the number fool you; the rock was just as big as ever. The crowd at Old Ironsides was kicking off Sacramento's own rock/power pop/indie group Lite Brite's nine-day tour, its second. Their last tour, Lite Brite headed up north to Seattle. This time, the band will accompany Musical Charis, an experimental/pop/indie band, to San Diego on its "One Way Ticket to Texas" tour. Providing a sound that has been influenced by many groups, including Radiohead and Led Zeppelin, Lite Brite captivates the audience. The three members have

Historic City Cemetery kicks off Beer Week

To kick off Sacramento's Beer Week, the Old City Cemetery Committee conducted a tour of Sacramento brewers who are buried in Sacramento's Historic City Cemetery. The tour began at 10 a.m. Saturday, with about 40 people gathered to learn about these historical beer makers. The tour was guided by Dr. Bob LaPerriere, who shared his wealth of knowledge as we stopped at the brewers' graves throughout the beautiful cemetery. It was interesting to learn that all but two of the brewers buried there were German by ancestry and most of these men interacted with each other, whether it was through their business investments, ownership or employment. The first stop was at the grave site of Frank Ru
