Dining out as a vegetarian or vegan can be difficult. For those with dietary restrictions, modifying menu items or asking for substitutions becomes a normal part of ordering at restaurants. Many restaurants have menus that accommodate those with food allergies or whose diets are restricted, but the best way to be sure you are not eating foods you are allergic to or you choose not to is to ask. Shoki Ramen House is a popular destination for vegetarians, vegans and meat eaters alike. The Sacramento Press recently spoke with a vegan who frequents Shoki Ramen House regularly. His experience prompted The Sacramento Press to do some research and create a guide to Shoki Ramen House for vegans
“The most important part of review writing is to tell a story,” said Nick Miller, associate editor at Sacramento News & Review and panelist at Wednesday evening’s review writing workshop, hosted by The Sacramento Press. You should make your reader feel as though they were at the event by including specific details about what you saw, he added. Along with Miller, the workshop’s other two panelists, Rachel Leibrock of Sacramento News & Review and Carla Meyer of The Sacramento Bee, spoke from personal experience about how to effectively write a review of music, food or film. The panel also fielded questions from the 20-person audience in regards to writing style, etiquette and editing. The
Bicycle theft in Sacramento’s central city is an ongoing problem, but cyclists can take steps to minimize their chances of becoming victims. “People come in here every day telling me their bikes got stolen,” said Simon Garcia, assistant manager of City Bicycle Works at 2419 K St. “Every day. I’m not exaggerating.” The obvious tip for keeping a bike from being stolen is to lock it up, but it isn’t that simple, according to Garcia. “I consider all locks deterrents,” he said. “(But) if someone wants the bike, the lock won’t stop them.” Having said that, he added that some locks are better than others, and U-locks like the ones pictured below are the best easily transportable locks for sec
Throwing a Fourth of July celebration? Your fellow Americans have some tips, ranging from home-grown parades and potlucks to Elvis impersonators, dunk tanks and old-school amusements. This week, a handful of Sacramentans offered ideas on how to have fun and maybe even save a little cash this holiday with celebrations as diverse as the country. Organizing your own Independence Day parade topped the list of suggestions. Processions can be as small and impromptu as a clanging pots-and-pans parade of kids and adults moseying around the block or as big as a community parade with marching bands and dozens of floats closing down streets. Posted by caringparent After listening to the news and all the raids that have taken place in Sacramento of homes that are growing pot, how does one go about reporting a possible “pot house”, anonymously? I have some info of such a place, but I want no repercussions…I have a family to protect, which is why I am doing this in the first place. I believe in the law and do not agree with what this individual is doing. Dear caringparent, To anonymously report narcotics activity occurring in the city of Sacramento, citizens can call our 24-hour Narcotics Tip Line at (916) 808-5796, or they may submit an anonymous e-mail via our website: www.sacpd.org. The Sacramento Police Department is urging citizens to use their cell phones to text information about crimes to the Sacramento Crime Alert program. Citizens who see a crime and wish to inform police are instructed to text SACTIP and the details of their information to 274637, or CRIMES. Two-way conversation with an officer is possible, although it can be ended whenever the informer wants. Sacramento Police Sergeant Norm Leong said that no phone numbers were stored by the police department, and guaranteed privacy to anyone using the system. The program is a way for people to anonymously inform law enforcement of illegal activity that they would otherwise be hesitant to reveal due to the
Every day we’re stuck asking ourselves – how much is too much? While I was out with a friend the other day who was downing energy drinks, that question came to mind and made me think - does caffeine really do more than just give you a brief rush of energy?... Let’s start at the beginning. Apparently regular caffeine consumption reduces a person’s over all sensitivity to caffeine. When you reduce the amount of caffeine you intake, your body gets withdrawals, as it would with any drug, favorite dessert ext. The only way your body can respond to this is by your blood pressure dropping dramatically, which causes an excess of blood in the head ultimately leading to a headache. This headache,
Let’s face it – it's finally getting chilly in Sacramento and being albino isn’t necessarily the best way to go about things. I don't care if you're a girl or a guy - when winter hits we’re all having to face that dry pasty look!
