Ballet, music and art at Midtown's Second Saturday

Summer has come and gone but crowds at Second Saturday still remain large. Second Saturday events have grown in popularity and other communities participate in Second and Third Saturday art events. During fall several cities stop their art walks. Folsom and El Dorado Hills had their last Second Saturday of the year in September and October respectively. Popularity of similar events in smaller towns continues to grow. Attendance and art displays expand in the smaller venues but none of these can compare to the popularity of Midtown’s event. This Saturday I attended a handful of galleries and events. Since there are so many places to view and experience art I made a list of places I was i

October's Third Saturday

Fashion was the name of the game for this month's Third Saturday event held at the Westfield Galleria at the Downtown Plaza in Sacramento. Sacramento News and Review presented the event with Tais serving as emcee. Tais was there without his shadow Adam Saake but was there with his much lovelier fiancé. Instagon was the only musical guess during the time I was at the event. Fans of their music were able to enjoy an extra long set of their performance. A couple of the same vendors from previous months came back this month to sell their merchandise. Many new vendors occupied spots in the courtyard in front of Macy's. Corey de Roo owner of the French Cuff Consignment was on hand to introdu

September's Third Saturday

Rainy weather threatened many events this weekend in Sacramento but that was not an issue for a lower than usual turn-out during Third Saturday at the Westfield Downtown Plaza. I showed up before 2 and unfortunately missed Justin Farren’s performance. It seems I also missed a couple of designers’ fashion shows. Tais and Adam Saake, as usual, were quite entertaining. On this slow day they were able to keep things going and talked about upcoming events in and around Sacramento. They talked about Folsom Live which is scheduled in the Historic Folsom District on September 25. Folsom Live has grown in popularity the past few years. Thousands of people come from all around Sacramento for this a

Third Saturday in August

(Tais and Adam Saake hosts of S&R Third Saturday) This month’s Third Saturday event, as usual, was very entertaining. Adam Saake and Tais once again were the hosts for the event. I said it before, and I’m saying it again, these guys should start a comedy act. Maybe next month, after September’s Third Saturday is over they can walk over to Front Street and take their act to Laughs Unlimited. This Saturday they introduced two musical acts, three fashion designers, a dance group and reminded shoppers about visiting the many vendors who had set up shop on the lower level of the Westfield Galleria downtown across from Macys. Zak Norlyn was the first musical act of the day. Although I only ca

Ballet school moves to 17th and I

A ballet school run by the mother-daughter team of Pamela and Zara Hayes has relocated to a prominent Midtown building near Memorial Auditorium. The British former prima ballerina and her daughter, who followed in her dancing footsteps, just moved "Pamela Hayes Classical Ballet Training" to a vacant building at 17th and I streets last week. The ballet school's move to the block is seen by the property owner, Aaron Zeff, as a good fit with a restaurant row he's proposing to develop on the alley. The school left a temporary shared space at 1925 U St., on the outskirts of Midtown, for a place in the heart of the central city. The school had operated in Curtis Park for about 15 years before

Third Saturday breathes fresh air into K Street

The fliers and advertisements promised big things: “Local arts, crafts and fashion vendors will descend upon K Street, transforming downtown Sacramento into a bustling creative district.” On Saturday, Sacramento News and Review hosted the inaugural Third Saturday Creative Block Party and nudged K Street in the right direction. Despite the scorching heat, more than 40 aspiring clothing and jewelry designers, artists and local businesses set up shop along K Street. “I think it’s wonderful of SN&R to have done this…it brings life to the downtown area. We’re so happy to be here,” said Ginger Wong, president of Transformations Makeup Institute, did makeup, hair and glitter tattoos. Both asp

First 3rd Saturday Downtown Sac

Sacramento's first 3rd Saturday took off July 18 along the K Street Mall and Casear Chavez Plaza. Over 40 local arts, crafts and fashion vendors and musicians descended upon K Street. The Guac and Roll festival featured Sacramento’s very own Method Echo with opener Tainted Love. 15 Restaurants offered sampling & selling of Sacramento’s best foods featuring guacamole and avocados. There was a Xochimilco Beer & Margarita Garden, rock wall and a free kids area with inflatable games, slides, jump houses, Basketball Shoot Out and water games.   MethodEcho band member Josh Guerrero sings to the crowd at Casear Chavez Plaza just a few blocks away from  the first 3rd Saturday event along K

Is Sacramento fashion-savvy?

Just a few short years ago, Sacramento and fashion were rarely put in the same sentence. Before trendy boutiques and salons dotted the streets of the downtown grid, Sacramento was lacking in the fashion department to say the least. It seems that in the past few years, Sacramento has stepped it up. While there’s definitely still room for improvement, the majority of local stylists, boutique associates and residents asked seem to agree that their beloved city has potential and is (slowly) moving on up. Victoria Archulet, a sales associate at Franco Ferrini who previously worked at Madame Butterfly, said, “The Sacramento fashion scene is huge despite what many people think…[It’s] anything

Sac to get "3rd Saturdays"

So -- you like Second Saturdays? Do you like the way this local arts night has morphed into a street fair? Have you watched the event grow so big that you've hoped it could take over the central city more than once a month? Your prayers may be answered this month when a new Saturday street fair debuts in Sacramento. Sponsored by Sacramento News & Review (SN&R), "Design Downtown" will bring mostly locally made or "do it yourself" (DIY) fashion and art to the K Street Mall from 3 to 9 p.m. every third Saturday starting July 18. "We looked at the success of Second Saturday and said, 'Maybe that's something we can build on,' " said Clay Nutting, the sales and marketing manager for the paper
