It is a common belief that St. Patrick, patron saint of Ireland and the inspiration for countess pints of green beer, banished all the snakes from the Emerald Isle. He used a wooden staff to herd the serpents into the sea, banishing them forever. In reality, snakes never lived in Ireland. The climate is just too frigid for the cold-blooded reptilians. Midtown Sacramento boasts a much warmer climate, but, don’t worry, you will probably find a lot more corned beef and cabbage than you will snakes. For this year’s St. Patrick’s Day festivities on March 17, many Midtown businesses will be celebrating with their own takes on honoring the saint. One such place that will be showing off their Ir
Patrick Mulvaney has become one of the leading proponents and practitioners in the farm-to-table and slow food movements in Sacramento. His Mulvaney’s B&L – along with his catering and banquet hall – has won rave reviews from food critics and a large following of diners looking for great, inventive and extremely fresh food. Along with his reputation for creating great food is his generosity toward other chefs he has worked with or highly respects. This is borne out in what Mulvaney calls his " Family" “Family Dinners” events. He invites chefs and their staff to come in and use his kitchen to prepare a multi-course meal. The meal is served by Mulvaney’s staff in his “Next Door to the B&L”
From the beautiful day to the scrumptious food, this was an event not to be missed. It was new to me, and I was introduced to it by local wine personality/super salesmen Clint Crow from Berryessa Gap. "You just Have to check this out," he said. And after going and finding out not only the talent involved, but the cause they support, it makes me want to tell all foodies, sustainability kids and farmers alike. Yolo Land Trust has a long history of helping landowners preserve the landscape. The local networks of farmland, rangeland, stream corridors, wetlands and oak woodlands weave together to drive the economy, support wildlife and help make Yolo County a wonderful place to live and work
Extra! Extra! Read all about it! Sunday marks the Sacramento Tweed Picnic Ride, an event where bicyclists dress up as old-fashioned dames and gents. 'Tweed' can conjure up the classic image of a newspaper boy yelling the morning headlines, which is exactly why the sight of more than 100 passing bicyclists, cloaked in tweed, would cause a double-take. The bike ride will start at 8:30 a.m. at The Zebra Club for breakfast and finish at 4:30 p.m. at Hot Italian for dinner. After breakfast, riders will cruise to The Sacramento Bike Kitchen where coffee will be provided by Temple Coffee. Riders will then trek over to the Capitol, capture a group photo and make their way to Land Park for a picn
Rick Mahan was shaping hand-rolled pizza dough for Friday's lunch rush at his newest restaurant, One Speed, when a customer brought in tomatoes fresh from the garden. The plump red fruit later found its way onto a Caprese salad -- almost as quickly as pizza had made its way into the chef's heart. Mahan said he's been dreaming about creating a pizza place since opening The Waterboy in Midtown nearly 13 years ago. "I've never gotten over my pizza fascination," said Mahan, one of two pizza cooks cranking out pie after pie. "For me, the most satisfying thing to cook from start to finish is pizza. I've cooked everything over the years and I've loved it. This is proving to be a very satisfying
