The Sacramento area is expected to see temperatures as low as 30 degrees for the next 3 nights. This weather is extremely dangerous for the 1,000 homeless men, women and children in Sacramento County who are currently without shelter. Men and women (18 years and older) needing shelter can go to the Salvation Army, located at 12th and North B Street. The warming center will be opened from 8:00 pm until 6:00 am. Volunteers are still needed for the second annual Feed The Children event at Cal Expo, which will provide 1,600 families in need with food boxes on Tuesday. The event is part of Feed The Children’s “Americans Feeding Americans” truck tour, and the Salvation Army and Sacramento Kings will be helping out on the local level. “It’s something we did last year at the same site, and when Feed The Children contacted us again, we thought it would be a great idea,” said Salvation Army spokesman Syd Fong. “We just came off our Christmas distribution, but the need doesn’t stop after the holiday season – it goes on throughout the year,” he added. Fong said volunteers are needed to fill slots in the
This year marks the 125th anniversary of The Salvation Army, an internationally known and respected community assistance-based organization. Currently present in 121 countries around the world, The Salvation Army was founded in the United Kingdom in 1865, and later brought to the United States and Sacramento in the 1880s. May 19 marks a special day for the organization and The Firehouse restaurant, as it was on that day in 1885 that The Salvation Army held its first meeting in Sacramento at The Firehouse. While pitched as a planning session, the meeting lent itself to another task – a celebration of and for The Salvation Army officers who had come to make a difference in the Sacramento
As the rain came in with the cold front, News 10, Swansons Cleaners and The Salvation Army were on hand to deliver coats to those without. Wednesday marked the 19th annual Coats for Kids, and this year's drive raised over 33,000 coats that were handed out all over the region. Eight distribution centers were scattered from Stockton to Lodi, Fairfield to Roseville and Cal Expo. 15,000 coats were handed out at the Cal Expo distribution center alone. "This is our largest center by far," Sacramento County Salvation Army Coordinator David Bentley said. "By comparison, the Roseville center will only hand out approximately 1,500 coats." Long lines wrapped around makeshift rows at Cal Expo buil
Editorial Note: The Sacramento Press is in no way affiliated with any of the organizations mentioned in this article. Most of us have heard about the Salvation Army’s toy drive for local needy families. Through the media we see a family that is very happy to receive several presents given to children that otherwise would go without. All of this generous charity work begins with expensive marketing, fundraising events, donations, and of course volunteers. The most important part of this charity process is the families with children in need. When a family signs up for Christmas assistance from the Salvation Army they must provide certain documents, such as a proof of income, pro
While out on the Sac Press bike leaving fliers all over town, I noticed a sign lying down outside The Salvation Army in downtown. I of course left a Sac Press sticker on the sign asking the community to tell what happened. I was crossing the street to leave more fliers, when I saw some of the Salvation Army employees examining the sign and what I had left. I am proud that these people stumbled across the Sac Press site in such a unique way. I am still wondering what had the power to knock that sign over? Could it possibly have been a storm? A drunken driver? Hormonal teenagers? Someone please tell me what caused this.
