Urban youth lounge Vibe opens Oct. 8

After several years of planning, Vibe, the new urban youth lounge, will host a party at 5 p.m. on Saturday to celebrate its grand opening. Located at 1725 K St., the center will provide a place for teens to do their homework, socialize and be safe, said Catherine Pentoney, spokeswoman and former chair of Vibe’s Board of Directors. Since 2007, the Vibe Foundation has been raising money to open its youth lounge. The nonprofit organization was founded by Julian Nagler and David Schenirer. “Vibe was a concept that came out of a need in Sacramento for the youth to have productive things to do,” said Nagler, one of Vibe’s co-founders. Nagler said he believes places like the Boys and Girls Clu

Real Relationships: Sibling Rivalry

Q: I have two children that are close in age. My son is 13 and my daughter is 12. I feel like all they do is fight. I am a single mom, I work full time and the last thing I want to deal with when we are home together is them fighting non-stop. Half the time I am not even sure what they are fighting about, but sometimes it gets really loud and they are so angry. I am just about at the end of my rope. What can I do to get them to get along and bring peace back to our home? A: First of all, you are a hero for raising two kids alone and working a full-time job. That must be really hard, and you are a champ for even trying. As for the troubles at home, I can see how that would get really old,

Usher, now 42 with children, runs a Facebook page cataloguing shows. He sa

On Wednesday night, members of the VIBE foundation's Youth Leadership Board met at their 3,000 square-foot future lounge site, a building donated to them by the Sacramento Housing Redevelopment Agency, to discuss their recent accomplishments and funding plans. The youth lounge, which is scheduled to open in August, aims to provide a safe and fun environment conducive to the success of its youth members. Hear Me Roar

Today, shortly after 5 PM, my son called me from his cellular phone. It was obvious to me, immediately, that he was upset. Apparently, while walking home, an older Caucasian man approached my son and accused him of harassing his younger brother. Per my son, the man was "in [his] face," and he felt threatened. My son stated that he offered this man respect by referring to him as "sir" and looking him straight in his eyes; and although it was not necessary, he also told this stranger where he was after school, which was not where the incident took place. The man then asked my son if he was lying and told him that "this kind of behavior is not tolerated around here." There was also a Caucasia
