Legendary DJ Paul Oakenfold Spins Magic at District 30

Walking up to the venue, the thumping sounds of the opening act were clearly audible from half a block away. Clustered at the front entrance, a small swarm of well-dressed clubbers attempted to talk their way onto the VIP list as the line of ticket-holders stretched out past to the left, waiting patiently for the bouncers to take aside the rope and usher them into District 30 for the much-anticipated appearance of legendary DJ and producer Paul Oakenfold. Upon entry to the club, the place was already full to capacity with a crowd that would more likely fill a place like this on Friday or Saturday than a Thursday night. The openers, local DJs three b, treated the early arrivals to an expe

House music at District 30, Donald Glaude spins

By now you've probably heard a few things about the three venues that opened on K Street recently: Dive Bar, Pizza Rock and District 30. I've experienced the novelty of Dive Bar and tasted the rocking pizza, and Thursday night I visited District 30 for the first time to see house music legend Donald Glaude in Sacramento's newest boutique dance lounge. Access into the club was painless. I arrived early and there was no line at 9:30 p.m. Stepping in, you'll find the club's lone bar is on the right, and VIP booths line the left side. Keep going and you'll hit the dance floor and DJ booth, with some larger VIP booths tucked in the back. The smaller VIP booths toward the front run about $300 a

Keller Williams returns

Keller Williams made his triumphant return to Sacramento on Thursday night in front of a packed house at Harlow's. If the success of last night’s show is any indication, we won't have to wait another dozen years before his next visit.  The place was already jumping when I arrived a little before 8:30, and fans kept pouring in to the one-man jam band’s first set, which began just after 9 p.m.  Keller came on stage alone, as he is wont to do, strapped to an acoustic guitar. A stand to his right held an electric bass, in playing position, ready to be fingered. A stand to his left held an electric guitar, ditto. Behind him were several other electronic noisemaking implements, including a Mac

That 1 Guy at Beatnik Studios

"Rhythmically dazzling," says Melody Bowman, an attendee of That 1 Guy's Thursday night concert at Beatnik Studios. "You think you have the Magic Pipe figured out then That 1 Guy pulls out the Magic Saw and the Magic Boot."    That 1 Guy, the one-man band of Berkley, California, performed for his second time at Beatnik Studio this Thursday. This was the second stop on this year's tour promoting his new album "That 1 Guy and the Magic Pipe Packs a Wallop!"    Alvi McLeary of Cosmic Family Lighting provided an amazing laser light show and sound that truly brought the show together.    The show was opened by Pops the Beat Wizard, a local act specializing in electronica. Pops set the
