Tango by the River dance studio seeks community support to stay open

Tango by the River is facing some harch economic realities.  The studio has been losing money every year since it opened in 2000.   "Visions of Eden can no longer subsidize the studio during these hard times," states owner Donna Tielsch in an email asking for the community's support in upcoming fundraising events to save the studio from closing.   A fundraiser is scheduled on Monday, May 14, a tango pizza party to be held at the studio from 7p.m.  The guest of honor is Eduardo Saucedo.  The suggested donation is $25.  There are special events being held at the Tango by the River studio weekly in Old Sacramento.  To find out more details, please go to their site www.rivertango.com or

It takes two to tango – or Ten 22

Hungry for tango? Whether you are a tango dancer who loves to eat, connoisseur of South American cuisine or perhaps just a couple feeling romantic, this new Ten 22 and Tango by the River collaboration had something for you. A visit to Argentina without the airfare Chef Jay Verregge prepared a three-course meal while dance studio owner Donna Williams, lined up the entertainment as Argentine tango singer Ernesto Rassi set the mood for couples on a night out this week. Chef Jay Verregge’s authentic Argentine meal began with Chorizo empanadas, followed by plates of green salad drizzled in red wine vinaigrette. The main entrée was the highlight, Barbacoa with Salsa Criolla - - slices of stea

Valentine's Day on a budget

Whether you’re short on cash or you’d rather spend your money on something else, Valentine's Day can seem like another unnecessary financial burden. With the typical gift of chocolates, roses and romantic dinners generally geared toward couples, it may feel hard to keep up on a budget. This year, Valentine's Day falls on a Monday, leaving a whole weekend’s worth of events leading up to the holiday. The Sacramento Press had the cash-strapped in mind, when we put together a list of things to do around Sacramento, Valentine’s-themed or otherwise, for $20 or less a person. Friday, Saturday, and Monday Selland's Specials Selland's Market-Cafe 5340 H St Served daily (Monday - Saturday) after

Vibrations of the Soul - A Night to Tango

Friday night I attended a Tango dance performance, Vibrations of the Soul, put on by Tango by the River. The dimly lit theater at Sierra 2 Center was filled with friends, families and dance enthusiasts, the kind of people who watch “So You Think You Can Dance” or “Dancing with the Stars” and view themselves as professional judges. The stage was simple, without many props, except for a streetlight or a table or two. The images on the projector screen in the background set the scene for the story told by the Spanish-speaking narrator, Ernesto Rassi, who also was the theater director. He opened the performance with a powerful poem that laid the foundation for tango’s origins from an Argenti

A bit of Argentina lives in the River City

I'm going to be honest with you. I am obsessed with the tango. The fluid yet intense drama of the music. The passion that emanates out of an utterly technical and complicated piece of choreography. The ebb and flow of two entangled bodies in the throes of dance. Nestled among the shops of Old Sacramento is a place where the steamy dance halls of Buenos Aires have taken up residence in a local Northern California dance studio. Tango by the River is the brain child of Donna Williams who founded the dance studio seven years ago as a reaction to her own deep affection for the dance that was born in Argentina during the mid-1800s. From the regular class instruction on Tuesday, Thursday and
