The art of poetry can capture moments in time and immortalize an event forever. Petra Vineyard’s Wine Gallery in Folsom hosted “Verse on the Vine” Wednesday night, with various poetry readings that captured moments in the poet’s life. Writers shared personal thoughts and feelings that dealt with love, courage, honor, pride, relationships, shoes and bras. “Verse on the Vine” will be a monthly event featuring highly acclaimed poets from Northern California, and the open mic will give other poets a chance to share. This month’s featured the poetic talent of Shawn Aveningo, plus several people took the opportunity to share their poetry during the open mic. Appetizers were provided by Petra V
Cool winds filled with the sound waves of great live music started the second day of Folsom Live. As crowds gathered at the foot of one of the five outdoor stages booming with jams, groups of friends and couples poured into the party streets lined with local businesses with after-hour specials and eager vendors. Arriving at the event was easier than anticipated for many of the party-goers thanks to valet parking, shuttles and light rail access. For one of Saturday’s headliner, Los Lobos, there was certainly no lack of fans. Screaming and adoring fans were perched over the balconies at the nearby restaurants. The Grammy-nominated group performed a variety of music for all music-lovers and
Night of a Thousand Pumpkins in Folsom had plenty of participants. Carved pumpkins lined both sides of Sutter Street and as darkness came, candle lit pumpkins decorated the streets. A judging panel walked around and voted for their favorite pumpkins in various categories. I was attracted to the event by mention of the evening including a Zombie Train coming into Folsom’s Sutter Street rail stop. An evening of fun events was planned. Pumpkins lined Sutter Street but participants continued to bring their carved sculptures and placed them where there was room. Families walked around and patronized businesses that were open. Many of the Sutter Street shops brought in customers to their st
Construction continues on Historic Sutter Street in Folsom. Some stores continue with their day-to-day business. Other shops struggle to stay in business and then there are those who have moved or closed their business. The shops that remain open during construction will hang on hoping to take advantage of a revitalized Sutter Street. Today, after work, I took a stroll down Folsom’s Historic District and only saw a few shoppers in the area. Many shops were closed but when I took a closer look at some signs it looks like some only stay open until 5:00. Construction was the only noticeable activity I saw as I walked the 4 main blocks that make up Historic Sutter Street. An occasional shoppe
It was still quite warm for Folsom's Thursday Night Marketplace. I think there was only about 1/3 the usual number of people and about 1/2 the number of vendors. Sutter Street is still going through its renovation process and the street was closed off for the most part. Entertainment went on as usual but the heat made it hard for the performers to put on long shows. I was only able to watch four acts and looked for shady spots wherever they were available. The musical headliner was No Taboo and their stage looked very warm. They played differt types of top 40 rock. The Eastern Ways Martial Arts School put on a demonstration and also conducted a Dragon Dance with dancers in custom. Most o
Folsom’s Cattle Drive was a successful event. Even the cattle almost had success running away from the drive. They were lassoed and brought back to join the pre-established route after a brief period of time. Before the actual Cattle Drive started the running of the “Bullipedes” took place. The Bullipedes (ala centipede) are made up of 5 members running a one mile course and ending on Sutter Street. Prizes are awarded at the end of the Bullipede run. This family affair also included a parade that followed the Bullipedes. After the parade the Cattle Drive begins to make its from Folsom’s Lions City Park and ends at the end of Sutter Street by the light rail station. This is one of the last
For the next six Thursday nights Historic Folsom will hold their Thursday Night Marketplace and Street Fair on Sutter Street. Tonight was the second Thursday Night Marketplace event of the year. The events run from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. and some of the clubs on Sutter Street keep the party going long after the vendors and most of the crowd has gone home. Before I got started tonight several skaters were in attendance by the Sutter Street Parking Garage and were more than willing to sit and pose for a picture. They were a happy bunch and I saw some of them at other places on Sutter Street. The evening was quite pleasant and a gentle breeze carried the smell of food cooking from vendors on Sutte
