In a city that boasts a thriving community of locally owned businesses, artists, musicians and writers, it’s no wonder that Sacramento has a stunning array of public art displays that have taken the form of murals on the sides of buildings throughout town. The works are concentrated in Midtown and downtown Sacramento, where the eclectic collection of stores and businesses creates the ideal canvas for some of the most visually impressive pieces of public art. Local artist Skinner – born Warren Davis III – said he thinks Sacramento needs more work like the mural he painted on the side of the Java Lounge on 16th Street near Broadway. Skinner said he’s commissioned to do work all over the w

Krazy Mary's owner Mary Kawano said the store is thriving after its return to her home turf in East Sacramento. The boutique moved out of Midtown earlier this summer to a store at 3230 Folsom Blvd. — almost right back to the same place where the business opened 10 years ago. The contemporary designer store opened at 3200 Folsom Blvd. in 2000. The store was the first to carry premium denim and other fashions in the area, she said. The East Sacramento resident said she moved her first store out of her neighborhood and over to 2527 J St. in 2005 after competitors including Dara Denim and Barby K opened in Midtown. "That's where our market was," Kawano said. "I've always missed East Sac, 'c
Let the countdown begin for the second annual LAUNCH, Sacramento’s indie design and music festival. The one-night showcase features runway fashion, architecture, live music, furniture design and an array of other art forms all in one location: the Artisan multipurpose art venue on Del Paso Blvd. Planning of the festival started more than two years ago with a group of friends passionate about two things: art and Sacramento. “There’s a different side of Sacramento than most people think,” said Michael Hargis, the event’s coordinator. “A lot of creative people want to go other places.” Hargis and his team set out to represent the local art scene while also bringing in talent from other par
Krazy Mary's Boutique is bringing fashion and philanthropy together this weekend. This Saturday, Aug. 1, from 3 until 8 p.m. the ladies of the trendy boutique and its sister store Sugar Shack will be hosting an awareness and pre-sale event to help bring attention to the popular eco-friendly shoe line's charitable efforts. Started in 2006, the TOMS footwear line began when founder Blake Mycoskie visited Argentina and was struck by the amount of people who didn't have something that many people take for granted: shoes. He decided to redesign the "alpargatas," the flat moccasin-like shoes typically worn by locals, and started his "One for One" program that donates one pair of shoes to a chi
Just a few short years ago, Sacramento and fashion were rarely put in the same sentence. Before trendy boutiques and salons dotted the streets of the downtown grid, Sacramento was lacking in the fashion department to say the least. It seems that in the past few years, Sacramento has stepped it up. While there’s definitely still room for improvement, the majority of local stylists, boutique associates and residents asked seem to agree that their beloved city has potential and is (slowly) moving on up. Victoria Archulet, a sales associate at Franco Ferrini who previously worked at Madame Butterfly, said, “The Sacramento fashion scene is huge despite what many people think…[It’s] anything
