The streets of midtown Sacramento were filled with green-clad revelers in pursuit of green beer and shiny shamrock beads on St. Patrick's Day. At the corner of 21st and J Streets, a different sort of celebration drew a near-capacity crowd. The Sacramento Master Singers chose to honor the holiday with ‘Celtic Connections’, a journey through several centuries of music from the Celtic world. Artistic director and conductor Ralph Hughes led the 45-voice chorus through an ambitious program of music from Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and England. Acclaimed harpist Aileen Kelley provided accompaniment throughout the program, and also performed two solo selections. The ethereal, complex music of

Hair clippings were scattered along the sidewalk in front of de Vere’s Irish Pub Monday, which hosted the St. Baldrick’s fundraiser benefiting childhood cancer research organizations Keaton Raphael Memorial and St. Baldrick’s. An estimated more than 200 participants showed up to shave their heads, and it wasn’t just men going under the clippers. Women and children were also a part of the mix. St. Baldrick's is an international foundation dedicated to raising funds to find cures for childhood cancers. Located in Monrovia, Calif., it stands as a larger umbrella organization that partners with smaller groups. Keaton Raphael Memorial is one of these groups. Keaton Raphael Memorial is a nonp
This year de Vere’s Irish Pub and the Downtown Sacramento Partnership (DSP) are teaming up to host Sacramento’s biggest St. Patrick’s Day event at Cesar Chavez Plaza on March 17 and to give back to a good cause. The de Vere’s Party in the Park will benefit Maryhouse, a daytime women and children’s homeless shelter at Loaves and Fishes. “We started this party years ago to create a signature event for Sacramento and give back to the community that had been so supportive of us as a new business,” said de Vere’s Irish Pub Owner Henry de Vere White. “By moving to a larger venue, we’ll be able to do more for our charity partner Maryhouse and continue our mother’s legacy for their cause.” The d
This year, de Vere’s Irish Pub and the Downtown Sacramento Partnership (DSP) are teaming up to host Sacramento’s biggest St. Patrick’s Day event at Cesar Chavez Plaza at 10th and J streets on Thursday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Proceeds from the event will benefit Maryhouse, a daytime women’s and children’s homeless shelter at Loaves & Fishes. Maryhouse provides much-needed support and services for this vulnerable population, including the Hot Breakfast Meal Program and crisis management. “We’re moving our annual block party to the park, but will still host a pub party at de Vere’s on St. Patrick’s Day. By moving to a larger venue, we can do more for our charity partner, Maryhouse,” said de
It is a common belief that St. Patrick, patron saint of Ireland and the inspiration for countess pints of green beer, banished all the snakes from the Emerald Isle. He used a wooden staff to herd the serpents into the sea, banishing them forever. In reality, snakes never lived in Ireland. The climate is just too frigid for the cold-blooded reptilians. Midtown Sacramento boasts a much warmer climate, but, don’t worry, you will probably find a lot more corned beef and cabbage than you will snakes. For this year’s St. Patrick’s Day festivities on March 17, many Midtown businesses will be celebrating with their own takes on honoring the saint. One such place that will be showing off their Ir
This year de Vere's Irish Pub has decided to expand their St. Patrick's Day celebration by hosting two parties in one day. Due to the crowds over the past few years, de Vere's felt it would be better to create two parties so people could have better access to each venue and celebrate in style. de Vere's is hosting a Party in the Park with the Downtown Partnership, hoping to raise money for Maryhouse a local shelter for homless women and children, while providing a rock concert artomsphere in Caesr Chavez Park. This Party in the Park will host a large stage, enetertainment, local resturaunts, and about 4,000 possible new friends! de vere's is still hosting a party at their Pub on 16th
