Tahoe's Biggest Party, 31st Annual Snowfest Saved from Dirtfest

The 31st Annual Snowfest almost turned into a “dirtfest” this year after one of the driest winters in recorded history left the Tahoe Basin, well, dry as dirt. However, the often elusive Yeti returned to the Northern Sierra Nevada this week and has brought Mother Winter with him turning the tables on what many had thought would be the first Snowfest without snow. In short, about a foot a day has been dropping since Monday night above 7,000’. The new pow has come, and hasn’t stopped falling since it started about 72 hours ago. This kinda news is more than good, it’s will invariably to draw skiers and riders from as far away as British Columbia, Germany and even Tokyo, many whom have probab

Local illustrator's first children's book: "Snowmastodon! Snow Day Adventure"

I've been a professional illustrator for the past 15 years and have been able to work on a wide variety of interesting projects for the likes of The Village Voice, The Wall Street Journal, The Onion and NY Press among others.  For the past 2 years my wife and I have lived here in Sactown after 10 years of living in Manhattan.  New York is a fun place to live though by the end of my time there I was kicking cabs out of the stress and frustration of our hectic surroundings.  Luckily my wife's work brought us to the Sacramento which was a breath of fresh air for us.  Throughout that time I've always wanted to do one type of illustration work but had never gotten my foot in the door: children'

Legislation Calls for Improved Safety Measures at California Ski Resorts

Sacramento, CA — New legislation aimed at improving consumer protection and safety at California ski resorts was announced at the state Capitol this week. Assembly Bill 990, authored by Assemblymember Dave Jones (D-Sacramento), focuses on public access to California ski resort safety plans, standardization of signage and safety padding and serious injuries and fatalities reporting. “Presently, the California ski industry has no ski safety statute and limited ski and snowboard safety standards,” said Dan Gregorie, M.D., president and founder of the California Ski and Snowboard Safety Organization, which advocates for standardized safety measures. “We are extremely supportive of AB 990 t

One idea for how to enjoy your furlough days

If you're one of the approximately 100,000 Sacramentans who may have two extra free days a month, thanks to likely furloughs of state workers this month, you're in luck. No, you're not going to get that 10 percent of your income back. But with snow on the way this week, you have another option: Ski Squaw. The Squaw Valley Ski Resort announced today that it is offering furloughed state workers a deal on ski lift tickets - alliteratively known as Furlough Fridays - the first and third Fridays of the month. And the first one is this Friday, Feb. 6. All California State employees affected by the furloughs will be able to ski or snowboard at Squaw Valley for only $30. To purchase the tickets

TAHOE! SNOW! It's ON!

The first storm of the season started blowing in on Friday.  It is amazing how quickly the landscape can change in such a short time when the weather starts to cooperate.  The first blessed white layer covered everything in the first few hours, and for the next 3 days cloud after cloud dropped the precious, precious snow all over all of Tahoe.  By Sunday night we had a bonafide foot on the ground, and the snow shows no signs of slowing down, with big dumps on Monday and more forcasted for the rest of the week. Only Exhibition at Squaw is spinning right now.  Not even Exhibition actually, but it's the newly constructed midstation. Fritz Renner, who just walked in claimed "pow day" and "kne

"Thats it, Thats all" Red Bull movie premier

I was sitting in my car in the parking lot of Empire Events Center and had a familiar burn in my legs and a little head ache coming on. I had just drove down from Tahoe after riding opening day at Boreal. Most night after riding I make some dinner and go to bed but I had been waiting for about a year to see "Thats it, Thats all" the new Red Bull and Travis Rice two year film project shot in HD and 35 mm.  As the event started Arden Park Roots played to an anxious crowd all a buzz about the new season upon us and the chance to see this monumental movie. In the snowboard world videos come out every year and a few always raise the bar but I can not remember a movie ever having so much antic
