Sacramento gets taken to the 'Dogg Pound'

The sun was still hanging lazily in the sky as an enormous crowd filed into Midtown's cozy Ace of Spades venue to see hip-hop legend Snoop Dogg Friday evening. The famed indo-puffing, gin and juice-drinking rap veteran is no stranger to the Sacramento area, as just only seven months ago, the "Doggfather" performed at UC Davis' Freeborn Hall to an enthusiastic college crowd. Now, hot off the heels of his 11th studio album, Doggumentary (which debuted at No. 8 on the U.S. Billboard 200), the rapper returned to show Sacramento he's still one of hip-hop's best in the game. The small venue filled up quickly, with a diverse crowd ranging from young to old, longtime fans to curious new fans. On

Valentine's Day, doggy style

Contrary to what they say, you can teach an old dog new tricks – that is if said dog is king of west-coast hip-hop Snoop Dogg, and the trick is on you. With a career that has transformed the hip-hop music industry since the early ’90s, Snoop Dogg has launched a new tour, which stopped at Davis’ Freeborn Hall Monday night. The “Get Wet Tour" showcases new hit singles “Wet” and “New Year’s Eve” off of the March 29 record release of “Doggumentary,” a sequel to his 1993 classic “Doggystyle.” The sold-out Valentine’s Day show got the Davis college crowd worked up for a taste of “Gin and Juice.” The excitement, mixed with the aroma of marijuana, breathed into Freeborn Hall as the opening gues

A Fabolous night at Azukar

It's hard to describe the sensory overload: Cologne, body odor, marijuana. Flashing lights, minor skirmishes barely contained by dozens of bouncers. Not unsafe, but too much "swagger" and body heat. Why would Grammy-nominated rapper Fabolous want to perform at a nightclub instead of a larger venue for his first visit to Sacramento? Why would hundreds hang out in a less-than-savory atmosphere until after midnight to welcome Fabolous? It's hard to recall why much of Thursday night, or early Friday was unique, but it's clear that when Brooklyn rapper Fabolous talks, it makes you want to party. "F-a-b-o-l-o-u-s," as he refers to himself, rocked a mostly-drunk dance party at Azukar, performin

Too $hort makes special appearance in Sac

Renowned hip hop icon Too $hort, known by many as the "Godfather" of Bay Area hip hop, will be performing at Chris Webber’s Center Court Friday night in Natomas. The show was arranged by Everett Hunter Presents and will include appearances by guest DJs MP 3, Reese Roundtree and Steve DTrix. The multi-platinum artist began his career on the streets of East Oakland during his early teens, selling $5 cassette recordings of his work. He gained widespread acclaim in the hip hop scene with the success of Born to Mack, released in 1986 on his independent label Dangerous Music. The album was later re-released on the Jive Records label and went gold, selling more than 500,000 copies. He has relea
