Clients, staff and volunteers of WEAVE (Women Escaping A Violent Environment), the primary provider of crisis intervention services for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault in Sacramento County, will have an opportunity to sing along with Dorothy, Glinda the Good Witch and all their Oz friends Sunday, August 22, at Sacramento’s Crest Theatre, 1013 K St. in Sacramento. You'll know you're not in Kansas when Outword Magazine and the Crest Theatre present "Sing Along with 'The Wizard of Oz'" on Sunday, August 22. The historic Sacramento theatre, located at 1013 K Street, will be transformed into Oz, complete with Yellow Brick Road,Tornado Trivia and Emerald City backdrop, with Glinda the Good Witch presiding over all. The family-friendly festivities will begin at 1 p.m. with Karaoke in the Lobby. At 2 p.m. participants of all ages will compete for cash and gift prizes and ruby-slipper trophies in the Oz character Costume Contest, followed by a sing-along screening of the 1939 MGM classic film. Every Sunday this year the Shadechasers have been singing folk songs for the pleasure of their friends and neighbors in East Sacramento. We meet at the Clunie Clubhouse, next to the McKinley Library, in the auditorium. We will continue into the New Year. We had been meeting at 3 PM. But the new time is 4 PM to 5:30. All ages are welcome. We were initially funded by the First Five Commission of Sacramento for the first 12 months. We got a wonderful singing audience which just keeps coming. We have added children over the age of five. We have added folk and step dancing along with rhythm. Our songs tend to be from Pete Seeger, Malvina Reynolds, Woody Guthrie and other singers like Raffi.
“Grease is the word” was heard throughout the Crest Theatre Sunday during the first Grease sing-a-long put on by Outword Magazine. Nearly 400 people filled the Crest Theatre, singing and dancing to all of the classics, such as “Grease Lightning,” “Summer Love” and “You’re the One That I Want.” For me the highlight of the event was the participation of attendees including myself who went all out dressing up as their favorite characters while dancing, singing and even strutting across the stage in costume. “This was a great idea," said Allison Reyes, who attended the event. "I came because my 3-year-old daughter hasn’t ever seen Grease, so it kind of brought all the generations together:
