What’s a sign that it’s officially summer in Sacramento? Summer is around the corner, and signs of the season are showing up everywhere in the city, the days are warmer and outside recreational activities begin to increase. The Sacramento Press stopped locals in the central city during the Second Saturday Art Walk, and asked, “What’s a sign that it’s officially summer in Sacramento?” Musician/singer Elijah Bell, 19, lives downtown and said he knows it’s summer when girls are walking around wearing less clothing. He added, “The days seem longer, and more songs come out on the radio.” Live music and local street performers are also more prevalent during summer on Second Saturdays. Stre
Automotive treasure hunters find gems and long sought items at California Automobile Museum's Fall Swap Meet. 6am and already they are setting up the tables. The vehicles were lined up for over an hour and now it’s time to get to work. Trunks are opened, tailgates lowered and pop-up canopies appear to shade goods. A few polish up the goods, but most leave them alone. The older, the dirtier, the more rust, the better. They have found these in their backyards, attics, the neighborhood garage sale and maybe even here last year. Two men haggle over a black old toy truck trailer with one missing door. A young lady waits eagerly in the back ground. Finally the man returns and hands her the pri
Sometimes when things happen gradually it’s easier for us not to take notice. Take for example the new Target Store under construction at 65th and Broadway: A large chain-link security fence surrounds the perimeter of the work site, and a few enterprising folks have decided said fence would make for a good billboard. One after another signs were erected, tied to this fence. At first I hardly noticed. Illegal signs are all over the Sacramento Region, promising everything from Weight Loss Patches to Lower Mortgages to Baseball Signups, etc. Why should my neighborhood be any different? I guess it’s just harder for me to let things go. Everyday I have a 10 mile each-way commute, throug
Mark Tyndale, vice president of the Sacramento Police Officers Association, sent the following statement to media outlets Tuesday: My concerns regarding the ethics of Dan Roth from Councilmember Tretheway’s Office continue grow as it seems he is weaving a series of dishonest explanations to justify his behavior on the morning of Friday, April 9th. On the YouTube video, he is with Tretheway’s campaign manager from Capitol Campaigns, Corin Choppin, as he pulls Angelique Ashby’s political signs out of the ground and throws them behind the bushes. Apparently, Corin is not only Tretheway’s campaign manager, but is also married to Tretheway’s Chief of Staff, Randi Kay Stevens. It seems that R
Sacramento, CA Friday, May 1, 2009 Several Sacramento Police officers formed a blockade at the front entrance of the Five Fifty Five building on Capitol Mall today as demonstrators gathered to let their voice be heard by Bank of America officials. The downtown branch of Bank of America is located on the ground floor of the Five Fifty Five building. Bank personnel guarded the back ally entrance to be sure that those entering were there for bank business and not part of the demonstration. At this location the demonstrators were voicing their opinion of alleged misuse of bailout funds handed to the banks, and calling for the CEO of BofA to step down. When we attempted to question bank offici
