Boston Takes Over the Naked Lounge This Tuesday

In the mood for a low-country Regina Spektor-meets-Jimmy Buffett-on-whiskey act followed by a Dave Matthews crossed with a beached-out Buddy Holly number? Well, you can... this coming Tuesday, November 8 at the Naked Lounge in downtown Sacramento (1111 H St.), starting at 8:30. This all ages show features two of California's up-and-coming, on-the-scene singer-songwriters, Jo Elless (www.joelless.com) and Mike Macchia & Tyler Canaday (Mike's Lost and Found, http://www.youtube.com/TheMikeMacchia). Midwest and northeastern roots, with a little dixie thrown in for good measure, Jo Elless is a Berklee-trained multi-instrumentalist who arranges her songs for wind orchestra (all of the instru

Vesuvius Rocks 16th St. Cafe

Located at 2416 16th Street, in midtown Sacramento, the Sixteenth Street Cafe has quickly become a hotspot for those seeking not only their nightly liquid fix, but also their nightly dose of local hard rock, metal, and indie music.  On Saturday, April 17th, Vesuvius wowed the crowd with their hard-hitting sound.  Their high energy mix of buzz saw guitar, slamming bass, and steady beats, was capped by vocals that seemed to add a shot in the dark to every cup of joe in the house. Big Ben Armstrong rocks the bass, Austin pounds the drums, and Albert shreds lead guitar; all three share vocals.  Ben is a towering figure; in fact, he's taller than some professional basketball players.  If you d

Rx Bandits Induce Euphoria at the Boardwalk

In the westernmost corner of Orange County, California, you will find the seaside city of Seal Beach.  It's a small surfing community of about maybe 25,000 these days.  Women outnumber men.  It's predominantly white, middle class, conservative - State Senator Tom Harman, Assemblyman Jim Silva, and Congressman Dana Rohrabacher are all Republicans.  It's also home to the iconic Harbour Surfboards.  But this isn't about Ray Bay, the warm waters of the mouth of the San Gabriel River, or any sort of banter from a Tea Party trio.  This is about culture; this is about music; and this is about the euphoria-inducing sound of the Rx Bandits. This quixotic quartet has been around since 1995 (1991 if

Scary Kids Scaring Kids Bids Farewell To It's Sacramento Fans

As a longtime fan of Scary Kids Scaring Kids, I jumped at the chance to cover their Sacramento show Wednesday. The Gilbert, Ariz.-based “scene metal” band made The Boardwalk in Orangevale a stop on its farewell tour. Being a transplant to Sacramento from Arizona, I have had the opportunity to watch these musicians grow from playing local shows in their hometown to seeing them tour with music festivals and eventually pick up a record deal with Immortal/RCA in 2005 and go on to headline their own tours. Scary Kids is a very talented and very diverse-sounding band with an eclectic style and a set list ranging from high energy to soft and melodic. I think that this is why it has such a bro

Launching Sac Style

One of the true gems of Launch, a Vchle Magazine event that took place Saturday, was the innovative stylings of both the fashion designers and those in attendance. The event, dedicated to Sacramento's fashion and design talent, explored the question: What is Sac style? "Who knows?" Mel Eligon, store manager of Cuffs, asked. "Style has everything to do with the individual, and there are a plethora of individualities here. This sounds generic, but the D.I.Y. thing, seeking out unique pieces, is really big. In big cities like L.A. and San Francisco, certain things are put in your face for what is fashionable. But because we are a small town, it's easy for us to make an extra effort to look
