Marching bands, sports cars and beauty queens featured in Sacramento's annual Santa Parade

photographs by Barry Wisdom It wasn't the glitziest parade on the block, and more ads passed by than during a Talladega Superspeedway Nascar event, but the smiles that beamed from the shoulder-to-shoulder spectators at Sacramento's 2011 Santa Parade are the stuff that Christmas dreams are made of. Presented Dec. 9 by D&H Special Event Management, the capital city's 29th annual holiday tradition once again delighted young and old with an eclectic lineup of merry marching bands, a spate of sports cars, a bunch of Boy Scouts, a gaggle of Girl Scouts and a Santa in a pear tree. (OK – a Santa in a horse-drawn carriage.) Horses aside, chances are if it had an internal-combustion engine, it tr

Second annual Bastille Day Waiters' Race

Hundreds of spectators gathered Thursday night to watch waiters and waitresses from Sacramento restaurants as they gave their best definition of speedy service in the second annual Bastille Day Waiters’ Race in the courtyard behind 1801 L Wine Lounge. Waiters and waitresses from 25 central city restaurants made two laps around the block bounded by 18th and 19th streets and L Street and Capitol Avenue. With one hand, participants were required to balance a tray with a bottle of Perrier mineral water and two champagne glasses filled with water. The race began at 7 p.m. “From my perspective as the French consul, it’s great, that in a town like Sacramento, we have young waiters and waitresse

2011 New Year's resolutions

Sacramento starts 2011 with a new governor and many projects in the works. With the new year comes the opportunity for a fresh start, and many make New Year's resolutions to avoid past mistakes or better themselves in some way. We asked Sacramentans to share their resolutions with us. If you have one you'd like to share, add it to the comment thread below.  Janet Whalen Zeller, founder and co-director of Soil Born Farms: "To remember, moment by moment, that the life I want to live is the life I am creating now. To create positive change in our community by participating in the creation of a local food system that makes healthy food accessible to all."   Gerald Celestine, (pictured rig

"Dear Steve Cohn, where are my late night fried pies?"

Rob Turner, co-editor of Sactown Magazine, wrote what I found to be a truly inspired back page article in the Magazine's sixteen issue. So aptly titled "Meals on Wheels,"  the one-pager succintcly broke down the issue, the barriers, and the plan for allowing mobile food vendors to roam the streets of Sacramento.  Personally, I have read the city ordinances but I still cannot quite understand the reasoning that prohibits such glorious eating establishments from taking root in our fine city.  (Perhaps you can, so be it, but I really think we're missing out.)  I chose to heed Rob Turner's advice and write to city council member and Vice Mayor Steve Cohn (as well as the editors of SacTown Maga

Submerge magazine celebrates anniversary, 50th issue

For a number of Sacramento's magazines, the phrase "labor of love" takes on a double meaning. Three of the best-known local magazine publications are run by talented couples. Sactown Magazine is run by husband-and-wife team Rob Turner and Elyssa Lee, and Midtown Monthly is run by married couple Tim Foster and Liv Moe. Sacramento's newest couple-run magazine, Submerge, is run by Jonathan Carabba, 24 and Melissa Welliver, 29, who are unmarried. This Saturday, their biweekly will be celebrating its two-year, 50th issue anniversary with a party at Marilyn's on K. It will feature live music from hip-hop artist TAIS, dub artist CHLLNGR (formerly Dub Defender) and DJ Mike Diamond. "I think (wo

Sactown Magazine moving

Sactown Magazine will celebrate its 3-year anniversary by packing and moving. The move anticipates the bi-monthly magazine's hopes of going monthly and increasing editorial, advertising and sales staff, said Rob Turner, Sactown's co-editor-in-chief. Sactown will move Saturday from one historic skyscraper, completed in the 1920s, to another one a few blocks down the street. The move will more than double Sactown's office space, to 4,100 square feet. Co-Editors-in-Chief Turner and Elyssa Lee hired their first Sactown Magazine employee, art director Jason Malmberg, in January 2006. At the time they were operating out of their house. They moved into the Elks Tower that June, and have publish

Two-year-old local magazine brings home three ‘Maggies’ for the second year in a row

Sacramento? Red carpet status? Really? Yes, it's true, Sacramento reaped three more awards this year—not for best actor or best original screenplay, mind you. Rather, Sacramento was recognized for excellence in journalism, thanks to up-and-coming Sactown magazine. For the second year in a row, Sactown magazine won three of the 78 Maggie Awards presented by the Western Publishing Association to West Coast publications for 2009. The WPA, a nonprofit business trade association, has awarded Maggies to electronic and print publications it considers “The Best in the West" within the U.S. for 58 years, with the intent to "promote the pursuit of excellence among publishing professionals."
