A former power station, sitting empty and waiting

If you’ve ever you’ve wondered what that old abandoned building off the west side of I-5, just north of downtown Sacramento is, wonder no more. If you aren’t familiar with it, the City now owns the former PG&E Powerhouse, built in 1912 and vacated sometime in the early 60’s. Currently it sits empty, an eyesore for most that travel along Jibboom Street between the I Street Bridge, and Richards Boulevard. Most recently, it was nominated to be a part of the National Register of Historic Places. I recently had a somewhat exclusive chance to photograph the inside of the building for the Economic Development Department. Submerge magazine celebrates anniversary, 50th issue

For a number of Sacramento's magazines, the phrase "labor of love" takes on a double meaning. Three of the best-known local magazine publications are run by talented couples. Sactown Magazine is run by husband-and-wife team Rob Turner and Elyssa Lee, and Midtown Monthly is run by married couple Tim Foster and Liv Moe. Sacramento's newest couple-run magazine, Submerge, is run by Jonathan Carabba, 24 and Melissa Welliver, 29, who are unmarried. This Saturday, their biweekly will be celebrating its two-year, 50th issue anniversary with a party at Marilyn's on K. Sactown Magazine moving

Sactown Magazine will celebrate its 3-year anniversary by packing and moving. The move anticipates the bi-monthly magazine's hopes of going monthly and increasing editorial, advertising and sales staff, said Rob Turner, Sactown's co-editor-in-chief. Sactown will move Saturday from one historic skyscraper, completed in the 1920s, to another one a few blocks down the street. The move will more than double Sactown's office space, to 4,100 square feet. Co-Editors-in-Chief Turner and Elyssa Lee hired their first Sactown Magazine employee, art director Jason Malmberg, in January 2006. At the time they were operating out of their house.
