Want to check out some of Sacramento’s wonderful museums but have not yet had the time or budget to do so? Mark your calendars for this Saturday and head out to the 14th Annual Sacramento Museum Day.

A record 28 museums are participating this year, including newcomers the Center for Contemporary Art and the Sacramento Children’s Museum. 26 participating museums are offering free admission all day (10am-5pm; last admission at 4pm), and the Sacramento Zoo and Fairytale Town are offering half-price admission in order to offset parking control and security costs.

Sacramento has a wide variety of Museums featuring everything from art, science, and history to children’s exhibits, wildlife, and more.

If you’re having a difficult time narrowing down the options, take these suggestions into consideration:

In order to have sufficient time at each spot, it is recommended to visit no more than two or three Museums for the day

Many of the Museums are within walking distance of one another so, if you plan accordingly, you can park only once and still make your way to two or three spots. Check out the map.

If you will be taking your car, be sure to read over the Parking Suggestions to make sure your day goes smoothly and you avoid any tickets or fines.

If you don’t want to drive, but don’t live within walking distance, consider taking Regional Transit! A great way to avoid the hassle of parking on a crowded day.

Keep in mind that Sacramento Museum Day is a very popular event and that, due to safety reasons, some museums need to limit the number of admissions.

Consider attending Museums that are less well known to avoid crowds at some of the more popular spots (such as the Sacramento Zoo, Railroad Museum, and Fairytale Town) and to check out something you may not otherwise have gone to see!

In 2010 they expanded into their current space—a 22,000 square foot warehouse in Downtown Sacramento—and organized as a nonprofit. Now home to 30 resident studio artists, plus extensive gallery and event space, Verge continues their mission of exposing Sacramento to the contemporary art and artists of the region.

2011 was a particularly big year for Verge. Among many other achievements, they had a more-than-successful Kickstarter campaign ($9,165 raised on a $7,500 goal!), won the First Place award of the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission and Sacramento Region Community Foundation’s Arts Innovation Fund, and Executive Director Liv Moe was named Arts Executive of the Year at the Arts & Business Council’s “Prelude to the Season” event.

This Saturday, celebrate Verge’s 2011 successes and help them “Verge Ahead” into 2012 at the “Verge Ahead Success Party” (6pm-Midnight at Verge, 625 S Street, Sacramento). If you have yet to check out this innovative local arts spot, there’s no better time than this!

In addition to exploring the studios of resident artists, you’ll be able to play “Art Golf” (each hole is specially designed by a Verge artist, and be sure to try for a hole-in-one at the Sac365 hole!), get your photo taken at the photobooth for instant sharing of the fun on your social media networks, see live performances by a multitude of bands (Mom, Christine Shields, Fine Steps, Gentleman Surfer, and Ganglians), and dance the night away to tunes spun by DJ Scott Soriano and DJ Hailey. If that’s not enough, arts collective Future Art Notables will take over the temporary gallery with their installation “Assorted Spaces”, which allows viewers to walk among the pieces, fully immersing themselves in the art.

And, don’t worry, tasty beer is provided for the evening by local brewers Ruhstaller, as well as coffee from Insight Coffee Roasters (each $15 ticket includes two refreshments!). Plus, receive free giveaways throughout the night, and a little something extra if you're among the first 50 to arrive.

Come enjoy this soiree and celebrate Sacramento’s burgeoning arts community.

Not everyone has this coming Monday off (alas!) but for those that do, Sacramento has a few options for using your day off to celebrate the man it honors—Martin Luther King, Jr.

MLK365 is presenting the 31st Annual March for the Dream, which includes a peaceful march (choose to begin from the Oak Park Community Center, Grant High School, or Sacramento City College) that convenes on the Sacramento Convention Center for an afternoon of celebration. There will be something for all ages and interests—vendor booths, kids’ crafts & activities, entertainment, an art village featuring local artists, and more.

The Crocker Art Museum is opening their doors for their free Holiday Monday program. Monday’s event—“MLK Day – Lift Every Voice”—is a music-infused celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr, with regional choirs performing throughout the day. The event concludes with a screening of Not in Our Town, a documentary about the movement to stop hate.

If you think both those celebrations look fun—and you're also looking to listen to some jazz—consider signing up for Sacramento Wine & Nightlife Tours' MLK Day Experience & Smooth Jazz Celebration. This event meets for the March in front of Sac City College, attends the Celebration at the Convention Center, and then shuttles you to "Lift Every Voice" at the Crocker. From there, the shuttle will take you out to the Old Sugar Mill to enjoy musical performances by Tony Elder & Westbound Groove, Cynthia Douglas, DJ Rock Bottom, and more. This is a great way to make the most of your day!

Also open for the Holiday Monday, though not MLK-themed, is the Discovery Museum Science & Space Center, which is celebrating the opening weekend of their new Blast from the Past Exhibit. Kids can enjoy a day of hands-on fun learning all about dinosaurs! There’s a Dinosaur Train creative play area, dinosaur bone replicas on display, a “dino-nest” photo opportunity, and a dinosaur diorama craft.

If you are looking to give back with your day off, consider one of Hands On Sacramento’s volunteer opportunities for MLK, Jr. Day of Service.

Rain ran on Broadway for 300 shows and 8 preview performances at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre in New York City and has also been a hugely successful national tour for years. Together longer than the Beatles, Rain has mastered every song, gesture and nuance of the legendary foursome, delivering a totally live, note-for-note performance.

This multi-media show begins by taking us away to a time when four young men stepped on stage at the Ed Sullivan show and changed music as we knew it. Rain chronicles the journey America took with the Beatles, showing us footage of screaming fans, interviews, and historical happenings that changed us all.

Looking around the room, I saw three generations of Beatles fans, all singing along, dancing, and screaming like it was 1964.

On July 4th, citizens braved the hot weather to attend the Carmichael Elks’ 53rd annual parade along Fair Oaks Boulevard in Carmichael. People of all ages lined the streets, and most wore the traditional red, white, and blue and waved American flags.

The parade was led by two California Highway Patrol cruisers followed by two Sacramento Fire Department vehicles, all with lights, sirens and American flags. Several queens and princesses of various municipalities rode in vintage cars. San Juan Unified School District sponsored two school busses, and P.O.W./M.I.A. and The Daughters of the American Revolution
<strike>
 Daughters of the Revolution
</strike> (dressed in vintage dresses), were also parade participants. The Parks and Recreation District pick-up was followed by several skateboarders.

Eleven-month-old Ryder Patterson attended the event with his parents. His father Shane stated that the matching shirt that said “Mommy’s Little Firecracker” could not be found, so he was dressed in a white shirt and red shorts and white stars.

Bottled water and candy were passed out by parade participants to children along the route. Belly dancers in vivid costumes from Jodette’s Belly Dance Academy shimmied down Fair Oaks Boulevard followed by horses, military jeeps and bands. Students of Kovar’s Satori Academy of Martial Arts and Robinson’s Taekwondo provided martial arts moves along the parade route, and uniformed Boy and Girl Scouts chanted slogans as they walked by the review stand.

8 years ago I moved to Sacramento after a year of travelling around Oregon and California. I was fortunate to connect with a small group of people learning the art of fire dance and Poi spinning. I had been exploring the art in different communities throughout the bay area for a couple of years prior. Never did I think at the time that the next 8 years would unfold as they have. To my complete amazement, I still dance with the same people I met here 8 years ago, now called Obsidian Butterfly. We have been fortunate enough to build bonds that have withstood the test of time, well at least 8 years of time and as I've learned in the Fire Dancer world, that is a relatively long time. I still enjoy every moment of practice, rehearsal, and growth and love how the longer we stay connected the more fluid our dances become.

In the beginning, we were constantly met with rules and regulations prohibiting fire dancing, as it was still relatively new here in Sacramento, there wasn't alot of support in creating an environment for growth, or at least we didn't know at the time how to receive that support. In came the Sacramento Convention and Visitors Bureau, who upon contracting us for a New Year's Eve gig, which we still perform yearly on New Years Eve in Old Sac, we were able to begin developing a professional relationship with those who would be the people that have helped us carve out a space for growth over the years. After several years of working within the guidelines being presented we began gaining official approval and permiting for our shows and the places where we perform.

As a way to honor the community connection and give local fire dancers and groups (yes there are more than one) a platform to perform I applied for and received a grant from SMAC (the Sacramento Municipal Arts Commission) in 2008 to put on a themed fire show with local fire artists. This show became the beginning of our annual festival called the Fire Spectacular. The Fire Spectacular first occured on August 8th 2008 at 8pm (there is something magical about the 8's).

The Fire Spectacular is family friendly themed event and 2011 marks the 4th year of the Festival. In the past we have welcomed Controlled Burn from Reno, The Firebenders, members of the Fire University from Davis, Stacey "Pika" Fuego, Vikram, and of course Obsidian Butterfly along with the Obsidian Butterfly student troupe; Fire Rising. For 2011 we welcome back The Brotherhood of Firebenders, the Fire University, Obsidian Butterfly and another local favorite added to our mix this year, Flux. Now that we are receiving full support for our art, I find it exciting that we will be all be coming together this year at William Land Park in the amphitheatre under a full moon on August 13th to share our art and talents wtih the greater Sacramento community. Now that Sacramento in all its beauty and splendor has fully supported our growth for 8 years and counting, it's the least we can do to show our appreciation but to come together and put on a fabulous Fire Dance show that represents our evolution as a community.

We will be offering Hoop and Poi workshops in the day (pre-register on the Obsidian Butterfly website), Live music by Drumsum and Mystic Lotus, Vending (still taking vendor applications), and Fire Performance at night. We, Obsidian Butterfly, host the event and though we no longer receive grant funds to make it happen, we rely on ticket sales and vendor feees to help fund the annual event. We are also sponsored by Fractured Atlas, a fiscal sponsorship program that helps artists and arts organizations raise money from charitable sources. Fractured Atlast is a non profit sponsorship that takes donations on behalf of our event. 2011 funding has been low and we are looking for community support to raise enough money to make the festival continue happening on a yearly basis. We hope in the future to expand the fire element to include fire sculptures as made by local fire artists. To help us raise enough funding for our event, you may purchase tickets (directly through our website), sign up for a workshop, donate money through Fractured Atlas, or book us for a show; all of which help us continue sharing our talent with the local community.

For full event details and ticketing information, please visit the Obsidian Butterfly website at http://www.sacredfiredance.com/Events

Where does Obsidian Butterfly perform other than the Fire Spectacular?

Everywhere including backyard parties, Luau's, weddings, receptions, corporate events, grand openings, birthdays, childrens' parties, movies, music videos, fundraisers, photoshoots, festivals, holiday parties (yes even during all seasons). We offer silk and glow shows for day or indoor events.

Does Obsidian Butterfly Travel?

Of course. We service the entire Sacramento Valley from North Lake Tahoe to South, from Clear Lake to the Bay Area, Modesto, Lodi, Stockton, Ripon, Oakley, Hilmar, Chico, also including Santa Fe New Mexico and Portland Oregon.

Local business has been less than enthusiastic about supporting many events, both locally, and nationally, due in part, to the economy, and also, to the vast number of requests for all types of upspring opportunities. The sea is wide where sponsorship money is needed, and not many companies these days are casting a wide net of support.

Important issues, community events, common and functional causes are where most money is going today, and that makes sense. Here in Sacramento, an event is happening this coming Sunday, March 27th, and it could still use some of that support. And, it fits well within the scope of the aforementioned importance scale.

VolunteerFest 2011 is going to occur this Sunday at Raley Field, home of the River Cats. It is a wonderfully planned all day event, bringing together champions of service, and those that provide the opportunities to serve, all to one location to have a fun day of family activities. From a Family Fitness workout in the morning, to a Martial Arts/Activity demo by an amazing 55+ group, the morning is packed with excitement.

Then, as the afternoon continues, speakers from the Mayors office will share their thoughts on the future of Green and Volunteering, after which the BIG prize giveaways happen. Then, there is a comedy show and live concert to close the evening, wth Mother Mayhem, a local accliamed band, performing.

The day is FULL but the sponsor spots are not. This event has been embraced by all participating organizations. 13 in total, from the Food Bank and Family Services, to the Make A Wish foundation, to the Boys and Girls clubs all the way to Rebuilding Together Sacramento and A Touch Of Understanding. Canine Companions for Independence, the wonderful volunteers that train dogs for the physically challenged, will even be there with some of their great animals.

But support is what VolunteerFest needs. A last minute plea to local companies that can and WANT to be a part of this incredible event, and subsequent video series, should contact Inspired Actions today by visiting the website at - http://inspiredactions.tv. Send us an email ASAP. If you would liketo expedite the contact, reach out to the office at 916-572-5422.

This event will be great this year, and the foundation partners will forge a path for this to be the much larger and more impactful project that it is destined to be.

The Wizard of Oz is a musical film directed by Victor Fleming and based on the children’s novel of the same name by L. Frank Baum. Although it won few honors when it came out, it became the best-known film of then 16-year-old ingénue Judy Garland and launched a number of still-popular songs such as “We’re Off to See the Wizard,” “Ding-Dong the Witch Is Dead” and Garland’s signature classic, “Over the Rainbow.” It has been the inspiration for numerous sequels and spinoffs, including the Broadway hit play “Wicked,” and has weathered the decades to become one of the most beloved films of all time.

Last Saturday, on August 7th, the Designing Dreams fashion show took place at the Memorial Auditorium. It was a fund-raising benefit for the Sweet Dreams foundation, According to the event announcement, Designing Dreams was the second fashion show since the 1950’s to be held at the Memorial Auditorium, where the last collection seen was that of Coco Chanel. It showcased 7 local designers, and was the result of a collaboration with headlining designer Tiana Vega, the Sweet Dreams Foundation and the fashion PR firm, Couture Connections. Over 2000 people were expected to attend this event.

I was lucky enough to be one of the attendees, courtesy of Midtown Monthly and Couture Connections. It was thrilling to be seated in the front row and view up close the details of the summer collections. All are women designers and include Jules Thor, Yennie Zhou, Nelli Rosh, Shamini Shumugam, Lindsay and Rachel Smith of Linzel Couture, Melissa Kay, and Tiana Vega.

The show went smoothly and seemed to be enjoyed by many, Through-out the show, clapping and cheering spontaneously erupted, aimed at certain dresses and models that walked the runway. However it wasn't mere fashion that got the crowd going. The part that received the loudest applause was the speech made by Virgina Quintel, mother of Brayson, a child who is a beneficiary of the Sweet Dreams Foundation.

Peace. Love. Swap. is a one of a kind independent coalition that organizes ongoing kid's swaps. The swaps are for local eco-minded parents to get together and recycle (exchange) their kid’s stuff (ages 0-14 and maternity). After the swaps, I donate the leftovers to local charities and needy families.

How it works: You bring items to swap (clothing, toys, sports equipment, etc.) plus $5 per family. While the volunteers set up, the kids can play in our family friendly venues and parents can look around at our vendor tables. Once set up is complete, families can come in and take as much or as little as they need.

I'd like to invite you to view more information, read our mission statement, and see what moms are saying about our swaps at: www.peaceloveswap.com. Parents love the swaps, as much as I love coordinating them. In order to make the swaps a success, we need as many parents as possible to participate.

Kids grow up so quickly and always need new stuff just as quickly. In this economic climate, what better way to get “new” stuff than to swap with other families? Please let me know if you are interested in joining our email newsletter or becoming a vendor at one of our events. It’s green, fun, philanthropic & catching on fast!

De Vere's Irish Pub held its inaugural St. Baldrick's event Monday, raising more than $81,000 for cancer research, $10,000 of which came from De Vere's.

The pub's roped-off sidewalk was packed with spectators trying to get a glimpse of local participants shaving their locks to conquer kids' cancer. De Vere's had 221 shavees lined up for their turn to get snipped.

Publicly displayed on the patio, shavees winced when they felt the cold steel clippers reach deep down to the scalp. The participants' reactions caused perpetual laughter, since there was a four-barber-rotation, and each head took only a minute to shave.

The crowd stirred when Shawn Eldredge, a City Council candidate for District 3, stepped up and removed his two-foot-long surfer-style hair. After the shocking transformation, many audience members turned to each other and commented, "I think he looks pretty good."

Other well-known Sacramentans included Chief Executive Steve Hammond of the Sacramento Convention and Visitors Bureau, restaurant owner Patrick Mulvaney and The Sacramento Press' own Sonny Mayugba. The shavees all seemed to have a sense of humor, and possibly a couple pints, to manage the onlooking crowd and media.

The St. Baldrick's Foundation has 621 events scheduled this year. Robyn Raphael, CEO and founder of the Keaton Raphael Memorial, was responsible for the events downtown and in the Roseville Galleria Mall, which produced almost 400 Shavees in only four hours and raised $96,000.

In memory of her son, Robyn Raphael created the Keaton Raphael Memorial and has so far raised more than $1 million to finding a cure for cancer. Raphael first met the three founders of the St. Balrdrick's Foundation in Washington, D.C., where they were being honored for their accomplishments. After the event, she spoke with the St. Baldrick's founders and discovered that the foundation was born out of a bet during a round of golf. In 2000, three Irish insurance executives wagered they could raise $17,000 for charity by the 17th of March, or else they would shave their heads.

More than $100,000 was raised, but the three shaved their heads anyways and started the St. Baldrick's Foundation that has thus far raised more than $74 million. Raphael was challenged to raise $30,000 or shave her head. A contract was even created on a nearby cocktail napkin, which Raphael signed and still has today.

2010 marked Raphael's first year hosting the St. Baldrick's Event in Sacramento and the eighth year in Roseville. In 2003, she shaved her head, and for two years straight had to explain why her hair was so short -- ; what Raphael called a "kind of awareness you can't buy."

A SacramentoComedy.Com Interview

From homeless to headliner, Dat Phan knows what it means to work hard to achieve your goals. His story is another "American dream" come true for someone willing to put it all out there.

Phan, the youngest of 10 kids, started in Saigon, Vietnam, and landed in the ghettos of San Diego with his mother. There were times when they slept on bus benches.

"I credit my mom for keeping me out of gangs as a child,” Phan said. “My babysitter was Cox Cable, and it kept me off the streets."

It was during this period that he was inspired by the celebrities he watched on TV.

"It was during the time that Michael Jackson was still black and awesome!"

This all was happening as the ghetto violence surged around him, and it propelled him to get out by any means and not look back.

"When you grow up poor, you have to either work really hard to try and get where you want to be, or you'll just stay put," he said.

Even though Phan took a drama class while in high school, he admits to being shy and introverted until after he graduated and enrolled in Grossmont Junior College in San Diego. After leaving school at 21, he decided to make his mark in the comedy world.

For the next seven years, Phan worked tirelessly at his trade as a starving artist, driving from one gig to the next, taking odd jobs, (he was once robbed at gunpoint while working as a doorman at the Improv in Irvine, Calif.), sleeping in his car or on friends’ couches.

All that time, he was working on his writing, graphing and charting each sentence and keeping his notebook with him because, as he said, "I was too poor for a laptop, and the notebook was all I had."

"I'm still am very obsessed with my techniques as I am writing my material. I analyze where the beats are, the wording and how many syllables," he continued. "Movies are never done without storyboards, timelines, formulas and equations. They are engineered for success. James Cameron didn't make Avatar without a plan!"

In 2003, while no longer homeless, but renting a space so small that there was only room to sleep under his desk, he continued to pursue any opportunity that presented itself.

While living on cheap ramen and generic Red Bull, Phan scraped together enough money to send a demo in to NBC for an experimental reality show they were looking at. That experiment was the inauguration of "Last Comic Standing."

After auditioning in person, he was chosen by the talent scouts for "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" to be a part of the show, beating 2,000 other comics.

On the show, his obsession with verbal technique brought him ridicule from other comedians, as the nation watched more experienced comics like Ralphie May, Rich Vos and Dave Mordal verbally abuse and taunt Phan for his inexperience and his "Zen-like" approach to comedy.

Through it all, Phan kept his cool, and his technique proved them all wrong as he took the top prize in the show, beating each one of them week by week until he was crowned "Last Comic Standing."

"Was the meanness depicted on the show accurate?” we wondered.

"If you are going to throw a steak (development deal), into the middle of a pack of wolves (comics) that are hungry, you are going to turn a lot of comedians into animals,” Phan said. “Stick all of them all in the same cage (house) for a month, and you get the madness that is a reality show."

With the national primetime exposure the show provided, Phan landed a part in the Kim Basinger movie, "Cellular," did voiceover work for "Family Guy" and began touring the country.

"That's my movie claim to fame right now. Five minutes as the only Asian character in a movie full of Caucasians!"

Phan went on to be named by the Smithsonian as one of the "Top Ten Most Influential Vietnamese-Americans" and frequently assists Stanford University's The Jade River Campaign, which provides research and assistance to Asian victims of hepatitis B and liver cancer. Phan's mother suffers from a form of the disease.

"How's life today?" we asked.

"Well, I am in a relationship now so my life is a lot more boring than before,” Phan replied. “I used to be the guy out on the hunt for girls – now I just hunt for Girl Scout cookies. How does it define you when you are trolling supermarkets for Girl Scouts like you are looking for your crack cocaine dealer?"

“Do you know ‘Flight of the Conchords?’ ” he responded when asked about his next projects. "I am trying to add the guitar to my act to accent the Asian material that I do."

Going back to his technical and perfectionist outlook, Phan said, "If you look at music theory and comedy theory, they have a tendency to contradict each other on beats, counts and callbacks. Because of this, I am working with a team of people to get this right. It's fun, and it has refreshed my enthusiasm for writing comedy as well."

Will he be performing music at this Sacramento appearance?

"Not this time,” Phan said. “It just isn't ready. I will, however, be slipping in some new comedy material. I am constantly trying to keep my act fresh."

Phan has a DVD he recently released called "Dat Phan Live" and his first R-rated CD called "You Touch, You Buy!" Both are available on Phan's website: www.DatPhan.Com.

Dat Phan will be appearing at the Sacramento Punchline this week, from Thursday through Sunday for five shows.

The Comedy Guy

Old Sacramento will be transported back to the mid-1800s once again for its 10th Annual Sacramento Gold Rush Days this Labor Day weekend.

Two hundred tons of dirt will transform this already rustic landmark heritage site into the appropriate mid-1850s California Gold Rush setting. Walking along the dusty trail, be prepared to witness a flurry of time-piece bands, costumed Wild West reenactors, horse-drawn carriages and Gold Rush activities for all ages — such as gold panning.

Sloughs for gold panning will be located in a few different locations, by the Railroad Museum and Wells Fargo Museum. Bits of real gold can also be found for the lucky few, according to Mike Testa, vice president of communications for the Sacramento Convention and Visitors Bureau.

"This is a great place to get entertainment," Testa said. "If you have never seen Old Sac before, it is worth seeing it during this time," said Mike Testa.

This free event will be spaced out over four days starting September 4th. Returning attractions include gunslinging reenactors along K Street, such as the Blue Canyon Gang and the Black Coat Sierra Nevada Guns for Hire. Don't worry about missing a performance, they will be performing every day at almost every hour.

"All of the [gunslingers] are hired guns," Testa said. "Some of them do this professionally for a living. Some in fact have worked in Western movies out of Hollywood or in Universal Studios," explains Mike Testa.

The event kicks off on Friday with music on the Embarcadero Stage, located in front of the Railroad Museum on I Street, along with gunslingers and street performers. A lot of the special events are on going all day and will repeat each hour. Tents will be set up with vendors, period artifacts and storytelling. Storytellers are all local volunteer docents with a wealth of knowledge and collaborative love of the Gold Rush Era.

Attendees can expect a tantalizing feast of barbecue meats and grilled vegetables at the surrounding eateries. All the restaurants will be open in Old Sacramento, along with Old West-style cooking demonstrations.

"Unfortunately, we can't sell the [demonstration] food because of health food regulations, but we can demonstrate how it was prepared," Testa said.

Quite a few of the restaurants will be running specials to coincide with the Western theme. The Delta King on the Sacramento River will be providing some specials, as will the famous burger joint Fanny Anne's.

But really, "All of the [restaurants] in Old Sac get involved in something fun," Testa said.

The cultural and ethnic performances have also expanded this year. At the Embarcadero Stage, some of the cultural variety pieces being presented will include European, Hispanic, Asian/Pacific Islander, African-American and Native Californian, according to the Gold Rush Days website. All of the performances will be done in authentic Gold Rush-era garb.

Dancing and musicians will be on hand to create a lively, Wild West atmosphere. According to Testa, a crowd favorite return will be the Johnny Cash Tribute Band performing on the Save Mart Stage on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. The Pony Express will be running the streets approximately three to four times per day. Visitors can expect uniformed postal workers on thundering horses galloping through the streets. A cannon-firing will take place each day at high noon at the Embarcadero Stage.

For a complete listing of performance times and scheduled events, please check the Sacramento Gold Rush website at Sacramento Gold Rush Days. Programs and walking maps will also be provided.

To help minimize parking issues, Testa encourages patrons to park at Downtown Plaza or use Regional Transit.

It's not quite time to break out the bikinis and flip-flops, but I have spotted some sleeveless tops and open-toed shoes lately...my all-time favorite season in Sacramento is almost here! This week, and particularly this week-end, is already jam-packed with music, festivals and outdoor events with the promise of the heat soon to come. I hope you haven't made plans already...

Where: Marilyn’s on K
When: Doors- 6:30pm, Show- 7:15pm
Why: You may get an idea for their music-style by the bands they’ve opened for: the likes of Evanescence, Papa Roach, Buck Cherry and Saliva to name a few. Supporting bands for the night include: Divide The Day, Trackfighter, Man Automatic. Four bands for $12 bucks- that's $3 a band!
Where: Punchline Comedy Club (Howe & Arden)
When: Doors- 6:30pm; Show- 7:30pm
Why: He continues to regularly tour the country performing his popular stand-up comedy, however, he is perhaps best known for his offbeat delivery of "the fake news" on "Saturday Night Live" for five seasons. Norm MacDonald continues to be a major comedic presence. His totally hilarious impersonations of Bob Dole and Burt Reynolds on “SNL,” were my favorites. However, MacDonald proved that his wit and writing were not to just for small screen. Among others, MacDonald played roles in Billy Madison with Adam Sandler, The People Vs. Why: I find it interesting to hear how authors come up with the stories the write, particularly fiction. What inspires them and how much do they really know? Liesche is the author of Hollywood Buzz, the second edition of the World War II era Pucci Lewis series. “The book is rich with drama, historical fact, female sleuths and old Hollywood mystery.” Liesche extensively researched the film industry during World War II and female organizations like Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP), which is the setting for this novel. She will give a lecture on the background of the book incorporating documentary footage of the WASP and film clips from the First Motion Picture Unit, featuring Hollywood stars. This should be a very interesting event. Bring your books if you got ‘em! If not, I’m sure there will be some to pick up at the signing.

It seems more so now than ever before that organizations across the board are reaching out for help. Despite all of the "doom-and-gloom" being reported on in the news, I consider myself to be a fairly positive person with an optomistic outlook on life. However, reality tends to sink in a little when you find that local mainstays within your hometown are being threatened. These times of "crisis" are when charity organizations and community support foundations see a significant spike in demand for their services. Every week there are events being held to raise money and awareness for various causes that will likely relate to every person at some point in their life. This week, I stumbled upon a handful of various causes to consider. Whether you enjoy shopping, a night of great food, a pint of beer with friends or a day out in the sunshine with other people, you should be able to find one of these events "beneficial" to attend.

It all starts with a playground. Three hundred volunteers are needed to join CaliforniaVolunteers, The Salvation Army of Sacramento County, organizers from KaBOOM! and residents of the community to build a new, safe playground at The Salvation Army. The new playground’s design is based on drawings provided by children who attended a “Design Day” event in March. The new playground will provide thousands of children in the community with a safe place to play. Currently, the children have only outdated equipment to play on, which will be removed to make way for the new playground. This playspace project is one of seven sponsored by CaliforniaVolunteers this year to celebrate the legacy of Cesar E. Chavez. Since 2007, CaliforniaVolunteers has sponsored 20 playspace builds constructed by more than 6,000 volunteers and supported 77 after-school service clubs in Title I middle schools across the state. These done-in-a-day play spaces are dramatic, inspirational events that people come back for again and again.
