Wine, dine and bid at SCNA's 21st annual silent auction

Local eats such as Mighty Kong Café’s pork sliders, Dad’s Kitchen’s specialty macaroni and cheese, Scott’s Seafood Grill and Bar’s oyster dish and Freeport Bakery’s cakes and cookies will fill plates while local wines and beers flow into glasses during three hours of sampling and socializing at Saturday’s Wine Tasting & Silent Auction. Spotlight Cakes offers cakes, Caribbean food

A native of Trinidad and Tobago is bringing gourmet cakes and the taste of the Caribbean to Sacramento with the newly opened Spotlight Cakes on Stockton Boulevard. Donna George, 54, learned the art of Caribbean cooking and cake baking at an early age from her family, and at 16, they moved to New York City, where she later began a career in nursing. “I’ve always dreamed of opening my own restaurant and bakery,” she said Wednesday, adding that it opened July 21. Her move to California from New York was prompted by the 9/11 terrorist attacks. “I witnessed the first plane fly into the first tower on my way to work,” she said. “I have seven kids, and one of them was in college near the towe

Dad's Kitchen Under New Management

Dad's Kitchen on Freeport Blvd. has experienced a few transitions over the last couple of years. Now, at the hands of new co-owners Christine Collins and Julio Peix, the restaurant is preparing for its greatest modification yet. Plans are to unveil the establishment under it new management April 1. Collins, owner of Deep Art and Yoga at the corner of 21 and H for the last five years, has a new vision for the eatery where she has been a longtime patron.
