The Sacramento City Council will decide Tuesday night whether to ask voters to use bins for their green waste. In a 1977 initiative, Sacramento voters said the city could not establish the use of bins for residents’ green waste. If the city wants to enact bin use rules, it must ask voters to overturn the 1977 law, according to a new report from the Utilities Department. However, residents in some areas of the city can choose bins instead of on-the-street pickup, according to the department. About 85,000 residents have chosen to use bins, the report notes. The City Council meeting will be at City Hall, 915 I St., at 6 p.m. Kathleen Haley is a staff reporter for The Sacramento Press.
