As part of the Sacramento Speaker Series, Condoleezza Rice spoke at the Community Center Theater to members of both political parties Wednesday night. She started off with her experiences in office jokingly. “I enjoy getting up, getting my coffee, then reading the newspaper and not being in the newspaper.” Though her talk ranged from 9/11 experiences to international economic prowess, Rice took time to say that, “good education shouldn’t be based on which zip code you live in,” and “even if you come from humble circumstances, you can achieve great things.” Before the talk started attendees wrote in questions to ask Condi during the question and answer session. Lesser lights shine brighter at Perspectives

Despite nationally known speakers Sarah Palin and Howard Dean headlining the Sacramento Metro Chamber’s Perspectives 2010 forum, it was the lesser-known speakers who had a greater effect on the audience. Terrence McNamara, a Sacramentan in the construction industry, said he found management consultant and author Marcus Buckingham to be the most interesting. “I’ve been coming to this for seven years, and it’s always the speaker you’re not interested in seeing who has the biggest impact,” he said. One organization aims to represent all Democrats in Sacramento. Who are they?

Democrats will carry some momentum into the 2010 elections, thanks in part to the party’s central committee, the Democratic Party of Sacramento County. The number of registered Democrats in Sacramento County has increased by 23,000 since 2008, while Republican registration has dropped by 3,000. “It was going up before 2008, too,” said Devin Lavelle, communications chair for the Democratic Party of Sacramento County. “It’s been pretty clear over the past decade that the Democratic Party lines up with most Californians’ values.” Lavelle’s group serves as a central committee for the party as well as an umbrella organization for other affiliated clubs in the area, including the Young Democr
