Nestled within the labyrinth of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) is the Office of Victim & Survivor Rights and Services, whose mission is to make victims whole by awarding financial restitution through efforts in locating victim information. CDCR collects more than $1.7 million in restitution every month for victims of crime throughout the state. However, when courts order CDCR to collect victim restitution, they do not always provide them with the victim’s address or phone number. This has left the Office of Victim & Survivor Rights and Services (OVSRS) with nearly $12 million sitting in a fund waiting to be disbursed to unknown victims. “A good amount
I felt compelled to write this after reading Brandon Darnell’s report on the Sacramento’s City Council’s 5-4 decision in favor of requiring non-resident drivers to foot emergency bills. You can view his article here I find this to be complete nonsense (not the article, the decision). Especially when reading some of the responses from the City Council and others. The Fire Chief states that it’s not to bring in revenue, but to recover costs? He’s joking right? What else is this but a new revenue stream? Top that off with the old school mentality of budgeting, especially in a government environment. Towards the end of each fiscal year budgets are reviewed to ensure all monies in the budget
This year marks the 125th anniversary of The Salvation Army, an internationally known and respected community assistance-based organization. Currently present in 121 countries around the world, The Salvation Army was founded in the United Kingdom in 1865, and later brought to the United States and Sacramento in the 1880s. May 19 marks a special day for the organization and The Firehouse restaurant, as it was on that day in 1885 that The Salvation Army held its first meeting in Sacramento at The Firehouse. While pitched as a planning session, the meeting lent itself to another task – a celebration of and for The Salvation Army officers who had come to make a difference in the Sacramento
Sacramento- "After 9 o'clock this morning, we received a report from a guest at the Embassy Hotel that 'there's a body floating in the river'" said Capt. Jim Doucett, Public Information Officer for Sacramento City Fire. Per Doucette, crews arrived and found a body in the water next to the docks on the south side of the Tower Bridge, behind the Embassy Suites Hotel in Old Sacramento. The Coroner's office responded, and with the assistance of Sacromento Police and Sacramento Fire, removed the body from the water. Per Sgt. Norm Leong, PIO for the Sacramento Police Department, the Coroner's office has identified the body to be that of 18 year old George Ho. The Elk Grove resident and recent
Tuesday, November 4th was to be like nearly every other Tuesday in my life. Head into the office, do some email, make some connections, then get picked up by my best friend Abe Cunningham for our weekly lunch at Tuli Bistro. But when Abe called fifteen minutes before our meeting time, I wasn't prepared for the news he would deliver. Chi Cheng, our good friend and brother, was in a severe car wreck in Santa Clara and is in a coma. For those of you who know him, you know he's a man mountain of positivity and all smiles all the time. For those of you who don't, Chi is a native of Stockton and Sacramento, a poet, a musician, and a father. As the bassist for Deftones, he's helped elevate Sacra
