Sacramento County Historical Society Presents Images of America, Mather Field by James Scott and Tom Tolley Tuesday, January 24, 7:00 PM Sierra Sacramento Valley Medical Society Building, 5380 Elvas Avenue, Sacramento Join us on January 24th at 7:00 pm, as historians James Scott and Tom Tolley present a history of Mather Field from prehistory to closure and introduce their book: Images of America, Mather Field. Born from America’s need to train aviators for the Great War, Mather Field has sat sentinel to the east of Sacramento for nearly a century. Overnight, the base transformed a lonely domain of cattle and vineyards into an aerie where fledgling “man-birds” were taught to fly and kil
Just off Highway 50, in a city far, far away, skaters are strapping on the blades and cutting wide circles around Sacramento's newest outdoor holiday rink. Maybe not so far away. It's in Rancho Cordova. It's beautiful. And they won it. Last summer, Rancho Cordovans surprised everybody by racking up more than 2.5 million votes in a nationwide contest sponsored by the venerable Reader's Digest. After weeks of online voting, and outpacing cities much larger -- and much smaller -- Rancho Cordova ended up in first place -- and holding a $40,000 check. Along the way, citizens of this city of 65,000 expressed what they would do with the money if they were lucky enough to win it. In post

The Metropolitan Fire District, which covers Sacramento and Placer counties and the cities of Citrus Heights and Rancho Cordova, will hire 24 or more firefighters with its funding, said Metro Fire Chief Bill Sponable. The city fire department has two rolling brownouts in effect, which means that certain
New environmental rules for the Sacramento sewer district mean that local residents and businesses will be forced to pay high fees, according to opponents of the regulations. But the new restrictions approved Thursday night will likely be viewed by many others as a big win for clean water and the health of the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. Five members of the Central Valley Regional Water Quality Control Board, a state regulatory body that oversees water quality in the region, unanimously set new restrictions on the Sacramento Regional County Sanitation District just before 11 p.m. on Thursday night. A crowd of more than 330 people gathered for the meeting in Rancho Cordova, which starte
The Sacramento Metro Chamber’s Business Walk heads to Rancho Cordova on July 23. The Business Walks are part of a regional “best practices” strategy for business retention and expansion. Over the last two years, that strategy—called Metro Pulse—has logged visitations of more than 2,300 businesses. In 2009, the Metro Chamber and its partners held five Business Walks, and currently the 2010 schedule will double that figure. “The City o

Rancho Cordova residents were treated to some doggone fun Saturday with at Woofstock. The aptly named event marked the grand opening of the city’s first dog park in Hagan Community Park. There's been talk of a dog park since 2002, but Rancho Cordova Mayor Ken Cooley still didn’t expect hundreds of people to show up, some of whom had traveled from as far as El Dorado Hills for the event. “I just did not know what to expect this morning, and I’m floored by the constituency that a dog park has,” he said. “It’s fabulous.” At least 100 hounds were present to help break in the park, which features everything a dog could want: plenty of space to roam, trees for shade and disposal bags for their
Peace. Love. Swap. is a one of a kind independent coalition that organizes ongoing kid's swaps. The swaps are for local eco-minded parents to get together and recycle (exchange) their kid’s stuff (ages 0-14 and maternity). After the swaps, I donate the leftovers to local charities and needy families. How it works: You bring items to swap (clothing, toys, sports equipment, etc.) plus $5 per family. While the volunteers set up, the kids can play in our family friendly venues and parents can look around at our vendor tables. Once set up is complete, families can come in and take as much or as little as they need. I'd like to invite you to view more information, read our mission statement,
As Melody Johnson and Shirley Lewis enjoyed a relaxing day at the Ritz-Carlton, Half Moon Bay day-spa, they were troubled. They thought it was criminal that many people couldn't afford such an experience. The two women see relaxation not as a luxury but as a crucial, restorative part of life. With that in mind, they decided to create a place where people can afford to experience a full serving of relaxation. Thus, Sacramento's Waterfall Relaxation Center was born. Last year, Johnson and Lewis started with a once-a-month, special event offering therapeutic treatments such as massages, waxes, facials and foot soaks. It started as a market research project, but ended with 300 clients for th
Sacramento, CA- All the hard work throughout the year of the Capital Air Show staff began to show it's fruit today as a myriad of aircraft flew in to Mather Field to participate in the fourth annual Sacramento Capital Air Show. Out on the tarmac, barriers and safety fences were being put in place, displays began to take form, the sound system that runs the entire length of the flight line was assembled and pilots took to the air to get a feel for the topography of Sacramento. Tim Baker flies a stunt plane for Geico; he's been passionately flying for them for six to seven years and has done 22 air shows. Not only is Tim the pilot, he is also in charge of the displays. "Geico works me hard
Make no mistake about it, I love serving my community. As a City Council Member and Mayor in the City of Elk Grove, I get to do what I love most – serve people and neighborhoods. During my tenure on the Council, we have accomplished much. Just a few of these accomplishments include: reforming our entire city government, bringing good jobs to the community, reducing crime, strengthening our neighborhoods, and much, much more. Though I call Elk Grove home, I am proud to announce my candidacy for Congress in Rancho Cordova – my native community (and now City!). That’s right. I was born and raised in Rancho Cordova. Yes, I am a Lancer. Yes, I played football. Max Miler was my coach! I helped
