Adam Carolla's heedless high speed

Adam Carolla’s wheels aren’t spinning. In fact, his engine has literally stalled. “I’m down in the garage trying to get a Lamborghini 400GT to start. And I narrowed it down to the fuel pump or the fuses right before I came up here to call you,” the comedian, podcast host and amateur mechanic says in an exclusive phone interview with The Sacramento Press. He’ll perform his stand-up routine at The Crest Theatre on Friday. In some ways, Carolla’s career has switched to high gear. A decade ago, he co-hosted goofy fare like “The Man Show” with Jimmy Kimmel and “Loveline” with Dr. Drew. Now he’s taken more creative control on projects like Fox Sports’ “The Car Show” and his own wildly popular

Locke Property Dispute (part 3)

Read "Locke property dispute (part 1)" here. This is my reply to the long response of another of my neighbors in Locke to "Locke property dispute (part 2)" RLM: It was with great interest that I read this. Esch: Glad to have your interest, Ronnie.   RLM: I have never publicly spoken on this matter, neither verbally nor in print--not even anonymously. Esch: According to my friend Jacquie and her friend, who visited me a couple weeks ago, you had quite a lot to say to them about it.   RLM: However, I must dispute some of the claims made. Firstly: There are two separate issues here 1" the manner in which the building at 1265 Levee was acquired by Ms. Esch and 2) the zoning of this propert

Locke Property Dispute (part 2) in the ongoing battle.

Continued from "Locke property dispute (part 1)" There was a second response – a very lengthy one - to my first article from an anonymous person posting under the name, “Locked.” I suspect “Locked” is one of my neighbors and a board member of LMA Locke Management Association, the public agency which has filed a lawsuit against me to take my property. Locked’s writing style is recognizable, accusatory, with no factual basis. Original article (part 1) is found here: http://www.sacramentopress.com/headline/56717/Locke_property_dispute_part_1 I’ll take Locked’s questions and comments one by one... Locked: Who's throwing stones? Esch: LMA board threw the first stones at me when they sent me a

Local student filmmakers tackle variety of issues

With family and friends in attendance, 40 aspiring high school filmmakers debuted their documentary shorts at the second annual Documentary Foundation Film Festival Sunday. The Sacramento student filmmakers covered a multitude of issues including racism in high school, legalization of marijuana, pink-slipped teachers and prisoner work programs in Folsom Prison. The program is taught by Sacramento native documentary filmmakers Keith Ochwat and Christopher Rufo and sponsored by KVIE. The duo created the Documentary Foundation student program as a means to inspire future generations of documentary filmmakers. "There are so many issues that affect peoples' lives," Ochwat said. He spoke of th

Tim Wise Brings Racism Discussion to Sac State

Prominent anti-racist author and speaker Tim Wise spoke about the continuing reality of racism in the United States to an audience of more than 700 students at Sacramento State University Wednesday. Wise opened his lecture, "Colorblindness and its Consequences: How Ignoring Race Deepens the Racial Divide," with a personal story. He told the audience about when he lived with nine guys in Louisiana and one of his roommates made a pot of gumbo but never cleaned it up. Wise said the gumbo sat on the oven burner for more than a day and a half before the mess and smell compelled him to clean. "It didn't matter that I didn't make the mess. The only thing that mattered was that I didn't want to

Basketball Court Lights & More: City's Press Release

Generations of Sacramentans have known Southside Park as a place for recreational fishing, fun and games with family and friends, and social outings. The Department of Parks and Recreation has embarked on a host of impressive lighting and lakeside enhancements that will make Southside Park even more attractive to current and future generations.    "Southside Park has always been an inviting place to the many neighbors and visitors who have enjoyed its many charms through the years," said Councilmember Rob Fong. "The City's lighting and lakeside improvements to Southside Park are a huge part of our overall investment in Southside Park and will make an already great place even better." The

We DID ask for lights...

Great to get that history!  Thanks so much (both for your efforts "back in the day" and for telling about it now).  Wrong about "now, no one probably asked", though.  We've picked up where you left off and have been pushing Parks & Rec on basketball court lights for the last few years.  Then, about a year ago, after the City successfully put together grants for the lakeshore improvement project, Councilmember Rob Fong's office came to us for feedback on the idea of adding decorative lakeside lighting to the project.  SPNA's members were very clear that those sounded fine, but not without putting in the long-needed bball lights as well.  Fong's office agreed and apparently found a way (ie

B-Ball Lights- Some History

Back in 1999, when I first joined SPNA, Tony took me down to the b-ball courts and said something to me like "Look at that. All those guys playing in the shadows while no one's in the tennis courts. We gotta get lights on the courts!" I gathered signatures and Jimmy Yee said he supported it but there was no money. Then, a few years later, the tennis courts were repaved at great expense, but no lights were hooked up for the b-ball courts. Then, when I worked with the teens they said, "There's no lights on the courts," and we started again. More support but no money. Now, no one probably asked, but lights are going up. Crazy, beautiful stuff. Hurray for the lights!
