The city’s oldest cemetery may soon be registered as a historic landmark, ensuring that remembrances of Sacramento’s early settlers remain for many years to come. The city’s Preservation Commission unanimously recommended Tuesday that the City Council list the Historic City Cemetery, located at 1000 Broadway, in the Sacramento Register of Historic & Cultural Resources as a landmark. “It’s the final resting place of so many early Sacramentans that were key in settling this area,” Bob LaPerriere, chairman of the Old City Cemetery Committee said Monday. “The fact that they are still here with original tombstones after 150 years makes this the most unchanged site of history in Sacramento,”
A new policy that will notify residents when a structure is scheduled to be demolished will be considered Wednesday by the Sacramento Preservation Commission. The Community Development Department will present a report on the change to the current policy of notification when a structure that may have historical significance is proposed for demolition. Under the historic preservation chapter of the city code, there is a provision for the city preservation director to make a determination as to whether the structure may be eligible for listing in the Sacramento Register of Historic and Cultural Resources. There is no requirement in the city code for giving notice to neighborhood residents,
A redevelopment project being considered by the city could help cement K Street Mall's future as an entertainment district. The proposal that went before the city's Preservation Commission Wednesday night would build a live music club with a roof terrace in the historic Banking Hall building at 700 K St., anchoring a key block across from Westfield Downtown Plaza and St. Rose of Lima Park. The plan by D & S Development, Inc., and CFY Development Inc. – led by David Miry and his son, Bay Miry, and Cyrus Youssefi and his son, Ali Youssefi – also proposes four restaurants with bars for the south side of the block, along with 153 new apartments and a nearly 29,000-square-foot, two-level park
On Wednesday, April 7 at 5:30 PM, Sacramento's Preservation Commission will meet at City Hall, 915 I Street, in the main council chambers. In addition to other agenda items, they will hear staff reports and provide direction regarding the four projects proposed for the 700 and 800 blocks of K Street. Due to changes in the way the Preservation Commission reviews projects, and due to the relatively low number of hearings in recent months, the Preservation Commission does not meet every month. The April 7 meeting will be the first held in 2010; the others were canceled because there were no scheduled hearings. The general public first viewed the projects proposed for the 700/800 blocks of K
This Wednesday, August 5, Sacramento's Preservation Commission will hear an update on the "Underground Sidewalks" survey project. The final report on the underground sidewalks should be completed by September of this year. The meeting will be held at Sacramento's City Hall, 915 I Str
Today the Preservation Commission will meet to discuss a study of bringing Streetcars onto Capitol Mall and back to downtown Sacramento. Over the past 30 years, public and private interests have examined the feasibility of streetcars and other services that could travel between West Sacramento and downtown Sacramento, but in May 2007 West Sacramento became the lead agency to prepare a draft environmental impact report for the project in order to gain permits for the project. With the partnership of West Sacramento, Sacramento, in cooperation with Sacramento Regional Transit (RT) and Yolo County Transportation District (YCTD), a partnership was formed to study the reintroduction of the str
