Travel back through time with Broadway Sacramento's Rain, a Beatles tribute show that began as an offshoot of the Broadway production of Beatlemania. Rain ran on Broadway for 300 shows and 8 preview performances at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre in New York City and has also been a hugely successful national tour for years. Together longer than the Beatles, Rain has mastered every song, gesture and nuance of the legendary foursome, delivering a totally live, note-for-note performance. This multi-media show begins by taking us away to a time when four young men stepped on stage at the Ed Sullivan show and changed music as we knew it. Rain chronicles the journey America took with the Beatles,

Don't let age fool you. El Dorado Musical Theatre is far from your run-of-the-mill youth theatre group. Many of the performers are seasoned professionals, w
The Sacramento Opera unveiled the program for its upcoming season after canceling shows last spring and then going on a fundraising drive to make this season possible. The two full operas, “Pagliacci” by Ruggero Leoncavallo and “Rigoletto” by Giuseppe Verdi, will be augmented by a special performance in the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament to kick off the season Oct. 6. General Manager Rod Gideons said the Opera at the Cathedral show will highlight the top-10 musical numbers performed by the Sacramento Opera since its inception in 1981 as voted on by about 200 opera subscribers. “We’re going to be doing arias, duets, trios, quartets and ensembles,” he said, adding that six singers wil

Sometimes, reading (and writing) an acerbic review that drips acid like one of those drooling, double-jawed xenomorphs from "Aliens" can be more entertaining than the show itself. Imagine an evaluation that begins, "If Dave MacDonald's Best of Broadway cast had dropped its sequin-covered panties and urinated all over the stage like an elderly Carol Channing, they literally could not do worse..." Sure, such a critique – clearly inspired by the delicious sarcasm of "Glee's" musical-hating cheer coach Sue Sylvester – might be a whole lot of fun on some admittedly sick, sick level, but comments like, "This is the most offensive thing I've seen in 30 years of reviewing – and that includes an
The spirit of patriotism is alive and well in the hearts and minds of nineteen young adults from the Sacramento area. Recently returning from a summer tour in Washington, D.C., these talented teens sang, danced and performed as members of Galena Street East, a performing arts ensemble dedicated to training Sacramento’s rising generation in the various styles of music and dance. The group spent a week performing at several prominent venues in the nation’s capital, including the Holocaust Museum, the Old Post Office, and the Lincoln Memorial as part of the Festival of States, an exclusive concert series for musical and vocal ensembles throughout the country celebrating the history and legacy

I'll be the first to admit it. I was drawn to Spring Awakening for all the wrong reasons. I was disappointed, but I won't fault anyone but myself for that. And, as much as I'd like to blame the marketing for this musical, I can't. I knew Rachel Berry was not going to grace the stage. I knew better than to think the practically perfect cast of Glee would surprise me in Sacramento with their best Duncan Shiek. Regardless, I approached Spring Awakening with a complete lack of common sense. I can honestly say I had no idea what my Spring Awakening experience would be like. Regrettably, I did very little research on the plot or protagonists. The only thing I knew was that "everyone" was doin
High energy and fun brought Old Sacramento to life at the Second Annual Sacramento World Music and Dance Festival. The two-day festival kicked off Saturday at the Benvenuti Performing Arts Center, which featured Angentine tango champions Miriam and Leonardo. Festivities continued Sunday in Old Sacramento. Both days were a celebration of international cultures through ethnic dancing, musical performances, historical storytelling and traditional reenactments of stories and folktales from all over the world. Despite the sweltering Sacramento heat, close to 5,000 attendees managed to stay cool under the shade of large tents and trees, and with the aid of popsicles and cold drinks sold by s
