On October 26, performing live at the Crest Theatre will be the Sacramento native and world famous performance artist, David Garibaldi. Garibaldi’s works are known for wowing crowds. The artist travels nationwide and overseas to showcase his talents on something as simple as an empty canvas. Music feeds into his performances and crowds go wild. Many admiring fans guess and wonder what the painting will be when he is finished, but they are always astounded and amazed. Once he has your attention, that’s it - you’re hooked. A myriad of local artists and hundreds of community members gathered in the street Saturday to celebrate art in multiple forms for the first Midtown Modern Arts Festival. The free, family-friendly street festival was held on 20th Street between J and K streets and featured six hours of music, dance, comedy, visual and performing arts and creative, hands-on activities for kids. The festival was run largely in part to the multitude of volunteers willing to give their time to put the event together, and neither the attendees nor vendors were charged to attend. “This is one way for use to give back to the community — bringing art organizations, artists and businesses together,” said Heather
The warmth of the Antiquité Maison Privée (formerly the Lovell’s Antiques building) on P and 21st streets, was a welcome refuge from the downpour that raged outside. Host Derek Keller greeted guests at the door, and he was warm and full of energy about the opening performance of “GEMS (Guitar Expressions Music Series).” Ross Hammond was on the bill for the night with a special guest, critically acclaimed saxophonist Phillip Greenlief. Sacramento-raised painter David Garibaldi delivered a poignant speech at Wednesday's "For Art's Sake" meeting. The 26-year-old thanked Mayor Kevin Johnson and the city for its support and guidance when he was growing up in Sacramento. While Garibaldi was a high school student interested in the arts, the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission recognized his potential and sent him to California State Summer School for the Arts on a full scholarship, he said. Garibaldi credited this and his high school art program with helping him redirect a creative fire that led him to graffiti the streets of Sacramento, inspiring him instead to become a performance artist. This event will be held Saturday, Sept. 19th from noon - midnight and Sunday, Sept. 20th from 10am - 5pm. This event will be an art and music drive hosted by T&M Organization for the Arts. Please bring any unwanted and or unused art or music supplies and receive a free dog. Supplies will be donated to Sacramento's Youth building art and music programs.
