Verge Center for the Arts has remained a consistent hub of creativity for Sacramento since they first opened their doors as a private art gallery in 2009. In 2010 they expanded into their current space—a 22,000 square foot warehouse in Downtown Sacramento—and organized as a nonprofit. Now home to 30 resident studio artists, plus extensive gallery and event space, Verge continues their mission of exposing Sacramento to the contemporary art and artists of the region.

2011 was a particularly big year for Verge. Among many other achievements, they had a more-than-successful Kickstarter campaign ($9,165 raised on a $7,500 goal!), won the First Place award of the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission and Sacramento Region Community Foundation’s Arts Innovation Fund, and Executive Director Liv Moe was named Arts Executive of the Year at the Arts & Business Council’s “Prelude to the Season” event.

This Saturday, celebrate Verge’s 2011 successes and help them “Verge Ahead” into 2012 at the “Verge Ahead Success Party” (6pm-Midnight at Verge, 625 S Street, Sacramento). If you have yet to check out this innovative local arts spot, there’s no better time than this!

In addition to exploring the studios of resident artists, you’ll be able to play “Art Golf” (each hole is specially designed by a Verge artist, and be sure to try for a hole-in-one at the Sac365 hole!), get your photo taken at the photobooth for instant sharing of the fun on your social media networks, see live performances by a multitude of bands (Mom, Christine Shields, Fine Steps, Gentleman Surfer, and Ganglians), and dance the night away to tunes spun by DJ Scott Soriano and DJ Hailey. If that’s not enough, arts collective Future Art Notables will take over the temporary gallery with their installation “Assorted Spaces”, which allows viewers to walk among the pieces, fully immersing themselves in the art.

And, don’t worry, tasty beer is provided for the evening by local brewers Ruhstaller, as well as coffee from Insight Coffee Roasters (each $15 ticket includes two refreshments!). Plus, receive free giveaways throughout the night, and a little something extra if you're among the first 50 to arrive.

Come enjoy this soiree and celebrate Sacramento’s burgeoning arts community.

A couple hundred people wanting to get an early start on 2012 partying headed down to Ace of Spades on Friday, where Oakland musician and frequent Sacramento visitor, Wallpaper., headlined an eclectic bill.

Starting the show was Chaotic Fusion, a drummer and DJ duo. DJ Oasis spun radio hits – "Teach Me How To Dougie," "Ghosts 'n' Stuff," "Last Resort" – while Radio 94.7 on-air personality Casey Lewis drummed along to the beat.

Performing next was Oakland-by-way-of-Panama Latin rap duo Los Rakas. Rhyming in Spanish over dancehall and hip-hop beats, the up and coming young pair were well-received by the slowly growing crowd.

Headliner Wallpaper. took the stage next, with the men of the group dressed to the nines in cheap tuxedos.

Wallpaper. is the solo project of Eric Frederic, who performs as Wallpaper. vocalist Ricky Reed.

Frederic received a music degree with a focus in composition from the University of California, Berkeley and now creates poppy party songs with lowest common denominator lyrics.

"That's a grown ass woman with a grown ass," is one example from the song, "Butt2Butt” (feat. Too $hort).

Although his two LP’s are called "Doodoo Face" and "#STUPiDFACEDD," the songs are well-produced and have sharp hooks. MTV uses Wallpaper. songs on shows like Jersey Shore, and sometimes this type of music resonates with everyone (see: LMFAO).

Kicking things off with the song, "Shotgun," Reed worked to establish a connection with the Sac crowd early, referencing past visits to the city.

"We're gonna take you right back to Press Club, Town House, Luigi's!"

Flanked by two drummers, a standing percussionist in the back and a female vocalist/dance partner, Reed and Wallpaper stayed hyphy the whole set and made sure the crowd did too.

At one point Reed lamented the fact that it was the day before New Year's Eve, and had the crowd do a mock countdown before performing the catchy, "Okay."

Later it was a short cover of Prince's "1999," played with a ukulele, before another sing-along ditty, "FUCKING BEST SONG EVERRR."

After Wallpaper. came back on stage for the encore, Reed let the crowd know that the band has a tradition where they finish a bottle of Jameson before coming back on.

Stupid, but fun.

Not bad for New Year's Eve eve.

Earlier this year, Woody Allen allowed all those who desired to take a step back into Paris in the 20’s with his hypnotizing film, “Midnight in Paris.” This New Year’s Eve at midnight, an underground speakeasy in Sacramento will play host to another world as well. The Crescent Club Speakeasy in Old Sacramento will host a Roaring 20’s party from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Upon entering the concealed back door through the Firehouse alley, visitors will enter an enchanting underground world complete with prohibition era cocktails and appetizers.

Music for the evening will be the Crescent Katz. The six-piece group has performed in the past at events such as the New Orleans Jazz Festival and the French Quarter festival. Throughout the night a Burlesque dancer will perform as well, bringing vogue old and new to the evening, considering the recent popularity of Burlesque groups of all kinds.

The speakeasy will also serve as a speakeasy casino for the night. Visitors ringing in the New Year will receive $500 of gambling “cash” upon arrival and are encouraged to dress for the occasion by donning flapper or gangster attire. Prizes will be awarded for the best dressed flapper, the couple with the finest attire and the person who wins the most money at the casino. Champagne and appetizers will be served at midnight in celebration of the new year.

The Crescent Club is located at 1150 Firehouse Alley in Old Sacramento. The speakeasy shares its ownership and management with the Café Americain just up the stairs and hosts live music; namely gypsy swing, jazz and blues; every Friday and Saturday night.

Buy tickets for the New Year’s Eve event by visiting the Crescent Club website. Currently there are less than 20 tickets left at $50. If tickets remain on December 31, tickets will be sold at the door for $65. In addition, a New Year’s Eve dinner will be hosted by the Crescent Club Speakeasy and Café Americain starting at 6 p.m.

For those who dare to be involved in the illicit activities at the Crescent Club this Saturday night, be sure to read the fine print on your registration. Without the password, you may find entrance to this secret and exclusive night in the 20’s unattainable.

After a slightly flawed but excellent nonetheless One Scary Nite 2, expectations were high for the third annual installment of the "Deon Taylor Enterprises presents: One Scary Nite" Halloween party, which went down at the California Auto Museum Thursday night.

Familiar attractions returning this year included "Mad Scientist" Jack Sparx with his Tesla coil, huge propane fireballs and deranged laugh, stilt walkers, fire dancers, go-go dancers and many bloody, gory "staff monsters" and zombies who shuffled around the venue with a vacant look in their eyes, grunting at passing partygoers.

Absent this year were the red carpet and arrivals, the national musical act (last year it was Bell Biv Devoe), the haunted house, the massive 7,100-pound fire-breathing metal dragon and the long, snaking lines of people waiting to get in.

Notable attendees this year included filmmaker and emcee Deon Taylor wearing an inflatable ostrich costume, former Sacramento Kings player/current regional scout/player development coach Bobby Jackson dressed as Blade, NFL free agent Ephraim Salaam dressed as Master Chief from Halo, and comedian and co-host Tony Roberts in costume as Fred Sanford.

Entertainment included sets by DJ Charlie Ramos and former NBA All-Star Cedric Ceballos and live performances by Sacramento acts I2W, Kumandae and Bueno.

Maybe last year's party was a lot to live up to, or maybe it's the economy, but this year it just didn't come together to be "bigger, scarier and better than before" as promoted. At one point Taylor had to light a fire and get the party on track, grabbing a microphone and ordering the lights turned down more, the go-go dancers back on their boxes, and people onto the dance floor.

Whether it was the light attendance or lack of starpower, Thursday's party just felt scaled down and a little "dead."

Will there be a One Scary Nite 4? Let's hope so, and let's hope it's reborn in a big way. One Scary Nite 2 was a blast, and it would be great to have Sacramento's biggest Halloween dance party back in full force.

Leonard and Rose Padilla have always been trusted as great civic activist in the regional metropolitan area. Beginning with his commitment as a Air Force Chief. And co-currently as of the earlier 70's they have not just peacekeepingly worked in Bondsmen ships, but founded the Lorenzo Patino Law School on J Street between 11th and 12th in Sacramento, California. With my understanding Leonard served the public to finally establishing succinct work patterns performed by him to bring justice to law. Their likes include water skiing and river rafting, picnicking, politicking, and gerrymandering, because they have always lived beside the levee' up the Sacramento River. But what comes first?

When I first meet the family I was probably fourteen. They had four children. Two boys; Alejandro & Greg, and one sister my age named Julie, in between. And even at fifth-teen everyone knew she was going to live exceptional. I loved Julie for her directness. She was a character. She knew in advance what was going where, in when to put it there! We became on good terms as I admired some things she would say about me too. Like I like your dialect and your courtesy drawing improving watchtower of malaise!

Two years later, she sent me a beautiful announcement invitation to participate in her La Quinceañera. And that I would be one of several young men that would require rehearsal for a ballroom dance we would fulfill on her birthday at the Red Lion Inn, one evening night in 1983. But carefully until then I was on my talent. I would follow all of my mother’s rules of etiquette and still consider my deportment. I still do remember going to practice twice a week at the Catholic Cathedral downtown on K Street. Back then I was just old enough to drive my father’s car, and park it in the garage across the alley.

One thought I more recently found cherished was my youthful frame of age sixteen which was somehow measured up to be worth pinches and smirks of the ballroom partner I drew attention from. Smile it's me Cindy, long time for you to remember just see if I can fathom to walk in step with you for a while. As I attended rehearsals I unfortunately was rather shy, and only took time out to know my dance partners wishes. But for now I'll say so far who couldn't be as light as I, on your weary toes. My parents were glad to see I had learned so how to bend and not take the Quinceañera halfheartedly, simply because all of the guest in the party were aware that her father was going all out and ravishing her with a classic ‘57 Thunderbird.

Yes, inspite of your days inpiration we were as glad too. You had a way of making everyone in their natural selves and making them feel they matter. Has there ever been a discussion about a Reunion of the Quinceañera and Ballroom dancers. Thanks for your sympathy. It seems like a long time.

More than 50 neighborhood parties will be held Tuesday as Sacramento participates in the 28th annual National Night Out.

It’s about crime prevention, said Sacramento Police Department spokesman Sgt. Norm Leong. “The idea is you get out, get to know your neighbors and show you’re visible to prevent crime.”

Leong said the block parties allow neighbors to get to know each other in a fun way, and that helps with building a stronger community.

There is no specific criteria that needs to be followed for a National Night Out event, since it is about getting neighbors together and having a good time.

“It can be as simple as an ice cream social or a bunch of neighbors hanging out together,” he said.

Police, Fire Department and elected officials make the rounds of events registered with the city, and Leong said it’s a good way to build relationships with local officials as well as help connect with officers in a relaxed manner.

To register an event, click here. Events registered by Friday will have the best chance of getting an official visit, Leong said.

LaTisha Lawson, a board member for the Oak Park Neighborhood Association, said National Night Out is a great way for residents to meet each other and start working toward bettering their communities.

“It’s an opportunity for residents to get out of their houses and take back the streets in a positive way,” she said. “They can meet each other, and then they can get together and take it to the next level and make a positive change.”

She added that many National Night Out events are formed by neighborhood watch groups, and having police and public officials come by is helpful.

“Residents and public officials can really talk about the issues in their neighborhood and really get that kind of face time with elected officials,” she said.

She added that she has written grants through the California Endowment to bring more activities – such as face-painting and music – to make the events even more fun.

City Councilman Kevin McCarty said this will be his eighth year participating in National Night Out as an elected official, and it’s one of the highlights of the year for him.

“We get out in a casual setting, and we get to talk about the neighborhood,” he said. “That certainly gives you a leg up as far as being able to address any challenges you might be facing.”

He said the events are usually small in size, with between 20 and 25 people attending, and it allows for more-intimate conversations.

“(On National Night Out), it’s not about them coming up to the council dais and talking in a formal setting,” he said. “It’s nice to just have a conversation about their street and their neighborhood.”

McCarty said he usually makes it to abut five parties in his district per year, spending about 45 minutes at each one.

Mayor Kevin Johnson mentioned National Night Out at the City Council meeting Tuesday, saying he is looking forward to having a good time visiting the different events, as he did last year.

Leong said the events are easy to start and don’t require any complex organization.

“If you haven’t heard of anything in your neighborhood, really that’s your chance to knock on a couple of doors and say, ‘Hey, it’s National Night Out and we’re getting together to barbecue some hot dogs out front. Come on over,’ ” he said.

In his North Natomas neighborhood, where a neighborhood watch group is forming, Leong said he sent an email out to the list he had for neighborhood watch.

With a sold-out audience screaming in excitement the ‘Thunder from Down Under (TFDU)’ took to the stage this evening at Thunder Valley Casino and Resort. If you are not aware of whom this group is it would seem that you may be in the minority. TFDU is a group of well-toned Australian men who whip women into a screaming frenzy by gyrating, tantalizing and teasing through individual as well as group strip-tease acts.

This all male revue, which has been in operation for almost 20 years, is Australia's answer to America’s famous Chippendale Dancers. The main difference between the two acts is that TFDU travels world-wide and continually sells-out most of their shows. This global presence, along with a bevy of well-toned and tan men, helped to make them the most well-reviewed and successful ‘male revue show’ in the world.

This ninety minute show was nothing but a bachelorette party done right. The men were there for the women and they knew exactly how to please them. Not only did they work the crowd, they used their machismo to tease as many women as possible; they did this by making the women yearn for more at each stage of the performance. Never did they just ‘take it off’ and say “here I am;” instead, they slowly removed their clothing a piece at a time and kept the woman begging for more. Just when you think that the women would have had enough of the performance, the guys find another way to remove clothes and move around the stage which whips the audience back into a frenzy.

One of the best parts of this show was the fact that it allowed all sorts of woman to let-loose and enjoy themselves. Whether a woman was in a business suit, pair of jeans or a skimpy dress they all seemed to let go of the outside world for a moment and allow the party atmosphere to take over. Although they were there to see the men disrobe, they also got a fantasy show at the same time. For a lucky few who were let on stage, the show was a little more risqué. This mix of fantasy, allure and performance would be difficult to replicate in a female review show – men are just not patient enough to allow the buildup that this kind of show provides. For women it is a completely different story.

Now, although the show was a flesh-filled spectacle designed for women, it should be noted that there were plenty of production problems. The choreography is not going to win any awards and the dancers are not going to be in any music videos anytime soon. However, that is not what the show is about and being tanned, good looking and ripped was more than enough to make-up for the missteps on the stage or in the production. The production problems did not seem to matter to the screaming women in the audience. In fact, it probably would have been difficult to find a woman who would have had any criticism of the show at all.

For the men who were forced to attend the show as the accompaniment of their companion, the mere enthusiasm and joy that their partner exuded this evening should have been enough to put a smile on your face.

Everything was pink, sparkly, floral and cute at the Etsy Party & Craft Supply Swap on Friday in Fremont Park.

The event was part of a “global craft party” orchestrated by the e-commerce site Etsy, and hosted by Amy Cluck of IndieSacramento. All handmade enthusiasts were invited to attend.

Tables covered with vintage floral sheets and topped with handmade goodies were drenched in contrasting golden specks of light and early evening shade, adding even more charm to the already charmingly intimate gathering.

There was a “MacBook photobooth” with handmade props to wear while taking silly photographs, plenty of free swag like Etsy buttons, heart stud earrings from Sweet-N-Salty (Amy Cluck’s online store), chocolate mustache pops with polka-dot ribbons tied to their sticks and miniature bottles of bubbles.

A cupcake fondue allowed individuals to dip bite-sized cakes into vanilla or strawberry frosting, then cover with their choice of colorful sprinkles from three decorative bowls.

The only way this event could have been any cuter was if it had started raining baby ducks, tiny kittens and fluffy puppies.

As individuals arrived, they placed craft supplies to swap later on in the evening into a pile.

“I’ve wanted one of those things forever!” one attendee exclaimed, pointing to a screen-printing kit. “It’s already on my Christmas list this year.”

She ended up with it, too. Other treasures found in the swap pile were sewing patterns, rubber stamps, fabric, beads, puff paints, a plethora of different textured yarns and craft books.

After the swap, handmade enthusiasts mingled, ate treats and enjoyed the warm weather. Just as the party was winding down, there was a raffle.

Yours truly was the winner of a Sublime Stitching embroidery pattern entitled “Unicorn Believer.”

And after IndieSacramento’s magical Etsy Party and Craft Supply Swap, perhaps I do believe in unicorns.

Men of all ages and shoe sizes gathered at the corner of 18th Street and Capitol Avenue, ready to walk one mile in women’s high heels to support WEAVE’s first “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” event.

“There are so many men that are affected by sexual assault, and this is a way for men to show their support,” said Amber Stott, WEAVE director of communications relations.

Stott estimated that since Friday WEAVE has raised over $63, 000.

Stott said all proceeds will go to WEAVE and benefit the various services that WEAVE provides, including counseling, WEAVE safe house, legal assistance, prevention programs and 24-hour support and response teams to help survivors of sexual assault.

In addition to hosting the event, WEAVE members also participated.

“We thought it was important to bring attention to the issue of sexual assault, and this is a really great way to spotlight this issue,” WEAVE board member Bryan Merica said while wearing his gold heels, knee-high socks and white headband.

The River City Gems, a transgender and cross-dressing support organization, also played a big part in the event.

Member Melissa Hansen, 51, said WEAVE contacted the River City Gems to help with the shoe distribution process and to coach the men walking in heels.

At 10 a.m. Saturday, 215 men walked toward the starting line as a crowd of up to 500 people cheered them on.

Roseville resident Shannon Pagel, 22, said she came to support her boyfriend, Dan Thompson.

“It’s fun to see men appreciate what women go through,” Pagel said.

The men anxiously waited at 19th and Capitol as retired news anchor Stan Atkinson announced the guidelines for the race.

“After the completion of each lap you will receive a different color lei and your race master will count your leis at the end of the race,” Atkinson said. “We not only encourage cheating, but we recommend it. May the best fellow win.”

The men took off walking and running in their heels of blue, white, gold and red as the crowd cheered in excitement, taking pictures and laughing.

Some men held signs that said “I am man enough to walk in her shoes” and “Put yourself in her shoes.”

Toward the end of the race, some of the men struggled in their heels, taking off one shoe, and eventually walking barefoot until the race ended.

“In my mind I didn’t think it would be that difficult to walk in a pair of heels, but after the first five minutes I thought, I’m in trouble,” said Jeff Briggs, 40, who lives in Carmichael.

The men who had completed the race wore three leis of purple, red and black around their necks.

After the race was over, the crowd shifted to the main stage on the corner of 19th and Capitol Avenue, where members of WEAVE gave out awards to participants.

The first award was presented to Santiago Proano, 39, a resident of Midtown, for “dude with the hairiest legs.” Atkinson handed Proano a large jewelry box with a silver pearl necklace with the words “Hairiest legs” written inside the box.

“This is great,” Proano said. “I’m so proud of it and I would do it again!”

Out of four teams, Activate Direct won for “most team spirit.”

Team member Matthew Eagan, 30, said it felt great to win and was happy to have a full team at the event to support WEAVE.

Sammy Cemo, 70, raised the most money for WEAVE with a total of $5,125.

“It was pretty easy,” he said. “There are so many people that are aware of WEAVE.”

The after-party kicked off at the Beer and Wine Garden, with free alcohol and live entertainment by Azuar. Vendors and information booths were set up in support of the event, including The Sacramento Bee, First Aid, Icing on a Cupcake and Le Spa.

Le Spa manager Robin Fischer, 48, said she heard about the event on the radio and thought it was a great idea.

“I think this event has been super! ” she said. “I’m totally impressed!”

Most of the men had taken off their heels by then, but Jason Poole, 27, founder of Bar in a Jar, still had on his high heels.

Poole said his teammates suffered from ankle scrapes and bruises, but he ran five laps, surpassing the one-mile goal. He said he definitely would participate again.

WEAVE volunteers were satisfied with the turnout of their first Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event.

Stott hopes men will walk away with the ability to talk about women’s issues.

“We will definitely have it again next year,” Stott said.

God may not play dice, but young adults in Sacramento do. An increasingly common site at parties, concerts and anywhere else lively friends gather is a small group leaning in at the circle they have created, usually accompanied by whoops and laughter, as someone is always winning in dice.

all-about-dice.com cites dice as the oldest known gaming instrument on earth, having existed with the Native Americans and also imported to the United States with almost every other ethnicity.

Playing or gambling with dice as the only object in the game is growing in popularity, almost always with several crumpled $1 bills piled alongside. As a social 23-year-old college student, I see my fair share of people enjoying their off time, and it seems that recently young adults are rekindling this timeless tradition.

One of the most popular dice games is called Cee-Lo, a very simple game of luck, brought over long ago with Chinese immigrants. This easy and exciting game has become the dice game of choice in Sacramento and has many people peering into its circle of chance. The results are young adults in an atmosphere that closely resembles children playing Chutes and Ladders. This rambunctious scene is found anywhere from parties to street sidewalks.

It is easy, fun and usually does not cost much. Games are often only $1 a round, so at worst, this quick bout of fun and friendly gambling may leave someone with a few dollars in the hole, a faster heart rate and a good time.

Francis House of Sacramento is announcing its 40th Anniversary Party to be held at the Scottish Rite Masonic Center, Friday October 29, 2010 from 6:00 to 8:00pm. This event celebrating 40 years of serving the homeless and poor of Sacramento County will include a four-course dinner and fine wines served by the best restaurants and caterers in the city. The dinner will be followed by a dance featuring the popular band, Mumbo Gumbo.

Forty years is a long time for a faith-based non-profit to survive, however Francis House of Sacramento is not just any non-profit. The organization sees that over 30,000 men, women, and children each year receives personal attention for their problems.

The mostly volunteer staff of Francis House provides resource information and counseling for the poor. Seventeen churches and the community-at-large support their efforts.

Francis House Executive Director, Greg Bunker explains, “In many cases, we provide the last hope for those disenfranchised from the mainstream of society. Anyone in need is welcomed at Francis House with a warm cup of coffee and a dose of compassion. Our counseling is very much like you would experience with a friend who is interested to help problem solve their dilemma.”

Francis House resources are distributed directly to the poor in the form of vouchers for emergency transportation, shelter and identification, or used to provide direct counseling and hospitality services.

Forrest Reed, Program Director for Francis House pointed out, “I am encouraged by the number of people in new jobs or in permanent housing due to our efforts. But personally, the best way I gauge our successes is by the smiles, appreciative words and expressions of hope I get to experience from those we help every day I come to work.”

The goal of Francis House is not to sustain people where they are now, but to help provide the way to pull themselves up and off the streets and into jobs and permanent housing. The process of getting them there doesn’t happen over-night so Francis House is right beside them every step of the way. Not everyone has the physical or mental ability, however for others who can do more, they expect sobriety, responsibility, hard work, and ultimately self-sufficiency.

One way to honor and celebrate Francis House of Sacramento and their 40 years of service and to help make sure they stick around another 40 years is to attend this very important fundraising dinner and dance event. Restaurants such as Mulvaney’s, Evan’s Kitchen, Tuli Bistro, Sampino’s and others will provide the four-course dinner and wine pairings.

You can purchase your tickets online (individual, couple, or corporate table) at www.francishouse.info or for more information call (916) 443-2646.

If you thought of the 1998 Coen Brothers cult classic “The Big Lebowski," you must have remembered how the protagonist encountered all those things.

Capitol Bowl celebrated its third annual “Big Lebowski” party with a quiz about the movie, bowling, white Russians and a viewing of the movie on the lanes.

“If it has something to do with ‘The Big Lebowski,’ and it’s in the area, I’m here, man,” Dude impersonator Jeremy Johnston, 35, said.

A recurring locale in the movie is a Los Angeles bowling alley where the protagonist, the Dude, and his friends/bowling partners practice. The constant theme of bowling is present throughout the movie, and was what motivated Capitol Bowl to take on the task.

“A party with bowling is a natural fit,” employee Chris White said. “It’s just a celebration of being with your friends and having fun and not worrying about the big things in life.”

Capitol Bowl is one of the only bowling alleys to host a “Big Lebowski” bowling party in northern California. Many other celebrations of the movie can be found throughout the state, including costume parties in art galleries or even, as Capitol Bowl did two years ago to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the film’s release, a silent auction for charity.

Anders Ek, 32, decided to come dressed as Walter Sobchak. He said he has seen the movie at least 20 times. “What’s not to love?” he asked.

Questions on the quiz ranged from things like the color of the Dude’s friend Walter’s bowling ball to the name of an obscure street sign in the movie.

Following a five-month hiatus, intriguing closing argument to the Federal lawsuit against California’s Proposition 8 were heard in the U.S. District Court in San Francisco on June 16, and a decision in the case is expected shortly.

The leadership of Sacramento’s Equality Action Now, a local, grassroots civil rights organization and the Sacramento Gay and Lesbian Center are planning to respond to whatever ruling Judge Vaughn Walker decides in the case with a rally at the Sacramento G&L Center, 1927 L St.

As of this writing there are no indications when the ruling will take place. Organizers are preparing for any day or time it could be announced. There were rumours flying yesterday that the decision could be handed down as early as this Friday, June 25, 2010, but the general thinking is the decision will not be made before this weekend’s San Francisco’s Gay Pride events or even prior to July 4th, Independence Day.

There are two possible rulings that could be made. Ether the banning of same-sex marriage will be viewed by this court to be unconstitutional and once again it will be legal for same-sex adults to attain a marriage license in the state of California, or the law which had caused so much controversy and millions of dollars on both sides spent to repeal or uphold will continue to be the law of the land.

One way or another one thing is certain, the ruling will be appealed and the case will continue to the Federal Court of Appeals before possibly heading to the Unites States Supreme Court.

Planners of the “D-Day” event are encouraged by early indications that the possibility of the decision on their side is high. With hope that they are right, plans are being formed to close down 20st street between K and L streets, the block the Sacramento Gay and Lesbian Center is located near, for a celebration.

Speakers and entertainment are being lined up and the community is being informed through a vast social networking infrastructure that has been developed since the general election of 2008.

Of course, organizers are also planning for a defeat which could start within hours of the decision at the Sacramento Gay and Lesbian Center, with a short press conference and then begin a protest march to the California State Capitol where participants will be able to express their feelings of the decision and speakers will offer their support and encouragement.

In any case, Sacramento will be ready to be vocal about what is predicted to be a cornerstone to the future of same-sex marriage here in California.

For more information about plans for “D-Day” go to the web site for Equality Action Now (www.equalityactionnow.org) or the Sacramento Gay and Lesbian Center (www.saccenter.org).

That weekend was my first exposure to many acts that I now love: Dr. Dog, Brother's Past, K'naan, Chromeo, Bonobo, Pnuma Trio, Pretty Lights.

One of my favorite "discoveries" at Camp Bisco, BLVD, played at Harlows on Wednesday night.

BLVD's music is tough to categorize. Their Myspace page describes the music as electro/electronica/breakbeat. I've heard the group alternately described as "urban," "livetronica," "electronic rockers" and "electro dance rock." If I had to put a label on it, I'd probably just go with "freaking awesome" and call it a day.

I arrived at Harlow's at 9 p.m. Wednesday, and immediately was struck by the crowd, which appeared to be mostly tatted-up, Affliction-wearing cage fighters and scantily clad ring-card girls. This wasn't what I'd imagined BLVD's fan base would look like, but, then again, you never know. Maybe this was one of those unlikely fan phenomena, like Morrissey's popularity with teenage Latinos. As I got settled, however, I realized that a good portion of the crowd were Cinco de Mayo revelers, who had, unbeknownst to them, stumbled into the best show in town.

I sat down at a table close to the stage and watched as the chairs around me began to fill up with people who were here specifically for the show. By the time that opening act Vokab Kompany took the stage, the tables were full and the crowd was ready.

Vokab Kompany is another act that refuses to be pigeonholed. Two MCs might lead you to believe that it's hip hop, but that doesn't begin to tell the story. The seven-piece band from San Diego played for more than an hour, a set that was at times funky, jazzy, heavy, bouncy, even bluegrassy. At one point, it eased comfortably in and out of Stevie Wonder's "Superstition." A moment later, during a long electric fiddle solo, a young lady joined the fiddler on the floor and did her best "Lord of the Dance." And it all made sense. Through it all, the crowd was treated to microphonic gymnastics of the dueling MCs, Rob Hurt and Burkey. The group is legit; see them.

Vokab Kompany set 'em up, BLVD knocked 'em down.

BLVD came out a bit before 11 and wasted no time getting the crowd, properly fluffed by the openers, into a tizzy. The driving beats and pulsing bass laid down by Dylan Mcintosh and Tripp Bains demand your respect. Curtis Sloane's guitar stylings make ... look, the point is they'll melt your face off. And put a party in your pants.

In the past, BLVD also played with an MC, but they recently parted ways amicably. While not having a singer may make its music a bit less accessible, it had very little effect on the quality of the band's performance.

All of the musicians in BLVD are very talented, but they have become festival staples because of their ability to work a crowd into a frenzy. Their music builds into a crescendo until you think they can't go any longer, at which point they just keep right on going. For an hour and a half at Harlows, to the delight of their fans and a lucky few who happened to be in the right place at the right time, BLVD just kept building those crescendos, taking the crowd to the brink and beyond, into the throes of musical ecstasy. It happened over and over, until those of us who spent the whole set dancing were ready to collapse. It was 1 a.m. I exchanged sweaty high fives with some of my fellow dance-floor warriors, and basked briefly in the afterglow of the evening's festivities.

It had been a fantastic evening with two great groups that want you to get up off your butt and tear the dance floor a new one. Really, the only thing missing from Wednesday night's show was you. You like to dance, don't you? Sure you do. Next time you see Vokab or BLVD is coming to town, throw on your favorite pair of dance pants -- mine happen to be silver -- and get to that show. You can thank me later.

If you know what's good for you, you'll head up to The High Sierra Music Festival for the Fourth of July weekend. BLVD is playing the 1:30 to 4:00 AM Thursday set, otherwise known as the gamechanger. Do it, it'll blow your mind.

Dear "Cheaters",

There is no easy way to say this, so I'm just gonna spit it out: I've been seeing someone else.

I want you to know that I'll always have love for you. When I was new to town, you took me in, and I'll never forget that. We'll always have Oregon basketball; who knows, maybe we can ring in the new arena together next fall.

You need to understand that it's not you, it's me. Please, don't cry. Stop it. You're a still wonderful bar, I've just found someone I'm more compatible with.

It's been going on a few weeks now. I wanted to watch the Giants game and grab a beer, but it was raining, and I didn't want to go all the way down Folsom to do it. I'd noticed this place on 19th that looked pretty cool. I went in, had a drink and, well, one thing led to another. Next thing I knew, the Giants game was over and the NBA playoffs had started and I was still there, having a great time. It was as if we'd known each other our whole lives.

O.K., O.K., I'll tell you who it is, but you have to promise not to make a scene. You probably know her, and this is already awkward enough. Are you gonna be chill?

It's The Zebra Club. I'm sorry, it just happened! I think I may be in love. Don't say that. Please don't cheapen what we had. Fine, you wanna know why? I'll tell you why:

The Zebra has everything you have: the flat screens, the sports packages (all of them), the Golden Tee, the wireless, the jukebox, the darts, the hugely eclectic group of regulars, the friendly bartenders playing dice with the customers for drinks. It has all that, and it's right in the heart of Midtown!

No, I'm not too lazy to go across town. If it were just that, I'd be comfortable with a long(er) distance relationship. The Zebra has plenty of things you don't: a large, covered patio out back complete with plenty of tables and an outdoor big screen.

Inside, to go along with the Golden Tee, there are two pretty sweet old-school pinball machines. Sometimes, I like to get my "Simpsons Pinball Party" on, and I just can't do that with you.

Also, the drinks are a little cheaper, and they have, like, 20 beers on tap. You don't have an answer to $1.75 draft PBR, do you? And don't tell me about $2.25 Olympia cans. I don't want to hear it.

All these things are nice, but what really sets the Zebra apart is the tiny kitchen and the fantastic pub fare that flows from within.

On the day I had lunch, the specials were spaghetti and meatballs, a chicken club, and a pastrami and bacon cheeseburger. I saw all three, and they looked great, especially the burger, but I went with the New York steak sandwich. The garlicky steak was as tender as can be, smothered in grilled onions and mushrooms and served on a toasted soft roll. I got it with a crisp green salad as well as a side of very well prepared fries. Thanks, Bert! I got all that and six PBRs for under 20 bucks. You can't beat that with a stick.

There is nothing fancy about the menu. For lunch, they've got burgers, hot and cold sandwiches, hot wings and a couple of salads. That's it. The chefs, Bert and Eric, don't do too much, but that which they do, they do very well. A huge plate of the wings just walked right by me. They look and smell amazing.

And they are awful accommodating. I was there in the late afternoon two weeks ago, and one of the regulars returned from the coast with a bunch of seafood he'd picked up. Bert took it back into the kitchen, and emerged an hour later with piping hot bowls of cioppino, complete with crusty slabs of garlic bread. Maybe one day I'll go to the coast and get some seafood. You'd probably kick me out if I pulled a stunt like that.

Oh yeah, did I mention that The Zebra is open for breakfast every day? Breakfast? At a dive bar? Yeah, breakfast. At a dive bar. And you know what? It's fantastic. Jess and I went in around 11:30, but Eric was happy to prepare us breakfast even though the lunch crowd had started arriving. We split the chicken fried steak and eggs and the biscuits and gravy. They were among the best examples of each dish I'd ever had. The biscuits were perfectly fluffy, and the sausage gravy surprisingly light and tasty. My only complaint is that I didn't get quite enough of the creamy goodness atop the lightly breaded steak, so I had to steal some from the biscuits. Kinda like stealing from Peter to pay Paul, but I couldn't help myself.

We got all that and a PBR for $15.00, including tip. Game. Set. Match.

I'm sorry "Cheaters," but I just couldn't go on living a lie. Good food is a trump card that you just can't beat. And, let's be honest, you're called "Cheaters" -- you probably should have seen this coming. I hope we still can see each other from time to time. I mean, college basketball season will be here before you know it. Until then, well, you know where to find me.

If you can't find me at The Zebra, you can always try lindol@gmail.com

From the distinct smell of cooking Latkas (potato pancakes), the sound of the spinning dreidal against the hard wood floor, to the timeless visual of the burning of the Menorah candles, Chanukah provides us sensual imaginary that is forever emblazoned in our minds and memory.

Derived from the Hebrew verb "חנך", the literal translation of “Hanukkah” means “to dedicate,” celebrating the Jews regained control of Jerusalem and the rededication of the Temple.

This year, as we commemorate the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem at the time of the Maccabean Revolt of the 2nd century BCE, we must also remember our local commitment, our dedication to our local community.

Honoring three generations of community leadership, the 2009 Community-wide Chanukah party will highlight the “passing of the torch” as we honor Lou Weintraub, Skip Rosenbloom and Brian Fischer for their commitment and dedication to our Sacramento community. Through quiet leadership and unwavering vision, our three honorees have contributed to the Medical, Land Development and Business landscapes which have helped shape not only the Jewish Community, but the Sacramento Region as a whole.

Lou Weintraub was Brooklyn born and went to CCNY where he majored in Chemistry. This was depression time and jobs were hard to find in New York, so off he went 2,000 miles away to El Paso, Texas, for a job in synagogue administration which he held for four years.
Eventually he went back to school, to the University of Pennsylvania, where he received his Master’s, just in time to enter the Army. There he spent the next four years honing his skill as a Clinical Psychologist.

Utica, New York was his first post-war job where he spent two years working as a Jewish Federation Executive and went to San Francisco where he spent eight years as a community organization consultant to Jewish Community organizations in the ten Western states and Western Canada.

Next, he moved to the San Francisco Jewish Federation where he worked for the next 23 years and was its Chief Executive Officer upon retirement. He later started his own consulting firm Weintraub Associates, Inc., specializing in fund-raising, community organization and non-profit management.

He served as consultant to the United Way of the Bay Area and managed a campaign for their new building. He was also consultant to the American Red Cross in San Francisco and served as its interim Chief Executive until a permanent CEO could be found.

His move to Sacramento came in small steps. Roslyn, his later to be wife, lived here and the commuting between San Francisco and Sacramento began. And it was during the commuting period that Lou found the time to earn a Certificate in Financial Planning from UC Davis.

Lou has been very active in the non-profit field since moving to Sacramento some eighteen years ago. He has delivered food to the home-bound for Meals-A-La Car and has been on the Boards of both the Community Services Planning Council and the Friends of the Sacramento Public Library. He is currently the Vice-Chair of the Emergency Food and Shelter Board, and is a congregant of Mosaic Law Congregation.

Dr. E. Scott Rosenbloom, better known as “Skip”, is a B’nai Israel congregant, a physician, a former health plan Medical Director, and a businessman, with a broad-based perspective on the health care system and expertise in the issues of quality and medical necessity for care. His experience encompasses a seven-year practice in occupational medicine and emergency medicine. He founded a managed care company, and he provides managing and consulting services for a wide range of regional businesses. Dr. Rosenbloom received his medical degree from Northwestern University in Chicago and his Master of Public Health degree from the University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Rosenbloom currently sits as the President of the Jewish Federation of the Sacramento Region.

Brian Fischer is co-founder, brand creator, and past Dir. of Business Development, Sales, and Marketing for downtowngrid.com.

After five years of building that well-known online-and-on-the-ground experience in hyper local marketing and community building, he has set new challenges behind the scenes as the current CEO & Chief Inspiration Officer of Playpen Incubator, where work is play, one of Sacramento's most dynamic media, marketing, and technology incubators that will launch new entities for years to come across the region and well beyond.

During its inaugural year, Brian devotes himself to the start-up and evolution of NextDor as a gateway Jewish social network online and through monthly events to develop the next generation of Jewish leadership across the 6-county region.

Every cult film worth its weight deserves a convention for fans to get together and celebrate their love for all things related. The Coen Brothers' classic noir spoof The Big Lebowski got its due with Lebowski Fest, which started in Louisville, Ken. in 2002 and has since gone national, sparking events in major cities across the United States.

Last year, Capitol Bowl in West Sacramento decided to get in on the action and held its first party in honor of The Dude and Walter's misadventures, and the party returned Sunday, Aug. 30.

"Two of my friends, Lori and Michael Blanchard, wanted to hold an event to raise money for a few charities they were part of," said Brandy Benten, bartender, talent booker and organizer of the first Big Lebowski Party at Capitol Bowl. "I decided it would be fun to tie that in with the movie because I'm a huge fan."

According to Benten, last year's event drew 150 people, many of whom dressed as their favorite characters from the film. The turnout this year was significantly less.

"I think the economy has something to do with it," said Capitol Bowl Manager Chris White. Despite the advertisements on the radio, in newspapers and on the Internet, only about 25 people gathered for the costume contest, bowling and trivia.

The movie itself was played on a screen inside the bar this time, as opposed to being shown on all of the televisions in the alley as it was last year."

"Everything sort of happened at once during the first one," White said. "Everybody wanted a little more structure this time, so we decided to separate the contests to make sure we could get more people involved."

The $20 admission fee got attendees two hours of bowling and entries in costume and trivia contests for a chance to win prizes such as bowling shirts, drink mixers and apparel from Capitol Bowl.

"I think the event is great because it kind of says that bowling is cool again," White said. "It kind of has this reputation of being something that only old men do, but I play in a league and I'm pretty sure everyone there is younger than me."

While this year's event didn't bring as many people as the first one, most who came were in costume. Several Dudes battled it out for best lookalike, as did two impressive Walters and many minor characters, including a dead ringer for enigmatic porn director Jackie Treehorn. In the end, the opponents made peace and laughed over a few White Russians just as the real Dude would have wanted.

"We wanted to make the event part of the actual Lebowski Fest this year, but it was too late," White said. "But next year we will make sure to be a part of the big deal. It will be much better."

The Dude would most certainly abide to that.

Once a year the Auburn Community throws a big 'ole Party, and wants all our neighbors to know you're invited. This Friday, June 19, The Auburn Park and Recreation District takes the lead on the regions biggest and best Free Concert and Family Fun Event. Party in the Park has grown to be the "Premier Music Event" in the Foothills, and it is because of entertainment such as this years headliners The Waybacks.

The Waybacks have been thrilling festival crowds for some time now with their unique blend of styles, which really defies definition but appeals to a wide variety of tastes, I would suggest going on YouTube and searching their name, it is quite a journey. From great songs when they were the "backing band" for the Grateful Deads Bob Weir, to a sultry rendition of a swamp New Orleans influenced ballad. In words I would have to say they are a rockin', folksy, rootsy, semi-acoustic toe-tappin' good time vocal jam band.

Opening up for The Waybacks, is Sacramento's own Kate Gaffney, who will be bringing her all-star band, which includes some favorite faces including guitar wiz Steve Randall. If you have not had a chance to catch Kate, I hope you take advantage of this great opportunity.

While music is the focus, it is far from the only reason to come up and enjoy Party in the Park. While there you will find a huge BBQ Pit, offering everything from the perfect Tri-Tip Sandwich to home cooked sweet potatoe delights (don't knock it until you tried it!) , of course there is pizza, hamburgers, hot dogs & more and to top it off is Cheri's Home Made Ice Cream! As this is a Summer kick-off event, we plan for the heat, in addition to the ice cream, Ice Cold Beer & Margaritas will be on hand, as well as Jamba Juice and a variety of other cool treats. Most all the food is served up by local service clubs and other worthy non-profit organizations. While you are welcome to bring your own food & drink (non alchoholic) we hope you will choose to bring your wallet and leave the food and drinks to us.

Got Kids? Well Party in the Park was started by a selfish dad (that would be me) who found it hard to find a way to listen to great music and still fulfill my parental duties. The Kids Zone is great, from the areas biggest climbing walls, to the ever popular pony rides and a ton of cool inflatables (bring the swimming suits kids, there will be 2 giant water slides this year) - all close by and within eyeshot of the music venue.

If that is not enough, we throw in a bunch of cool craft vendors and demonstration booths! We try to find a little something for everyone, cause I got a mom and dad I need to please, not to mention my now not so young boys! I encourage you to come up early, but don't worry if you get out late, The Waybacks won't start until 7:30!

Please visit www.partyinthepark.net for more on this fun time, or feel free to call the Auburn Rec District at 530-885-8461. Just come on up 80, take the Bell Rd. Exit (#123) , Turn Left go 2 miles to 49 (at Target) Turn Right, go a mile or so to the 3rd light & Turn left on Dry Creek (76 / Arco) - 2 blocks and you are there! If you like you can also go to one of my favorite sites, www.emusicconnect.com and click on our link! Or if you like go to www.waybacks.com

I hope to see you there, it truly is a special time, and the music can't be beat! In the mean time...

Commemorating the victory of the Mexican troops over the French army, Cinco de Mayo is the celebration of The Battle of Puebla in 1862. During the French-Mexican war, an outnumbered Mexican militia battled, and conquered, the French forces. Many often mistake the Mexican Holiday for the country's Independence Day, which actually takes place on September 16. While May 5 is an especially important day in Mexico, Sacramento undeniably knows how to celebrate the holiday. Check below for a guide to the city's Cinco de Mayo celebrations going on next week.

Sure, you could sit at home and watch it on TV. But this is the Inauguration of a new and different president, and this president, more than most, is about community. So, you wanna be with people on this historic day, no?

Someplace where you don’t need to wrap your head in wool to enjoy it?

The TVs will be on everywhere - what would a Sacramento bar be like without a TV? - but if you want a place where they’re celebrating, we’ve got a short list for you to check out. Keep in mind that most of these places will be offering drink and food specials, but we’ll leave it to you to find out what they are.

Here are a few places in town where you can watch the inaugural live - coverage begins at 8 a.m., but when He speaks is anyone’s guess. Aim for 9. And keep in mind that coverage will go all day and into the night. We’ve listed events by their start time. You are responsible for when they finish.

Start time: 8 a.m.

R15 - Bartender Todd tells SacramentoPress.com that the bar/restaurant will be decorated and ready with Bloody Marys and decorated food: red, white and blue pancakes. The Guild, at 2814 35th Street, has a capacity of 220, and will be showing the whole thing on the big screen, while nearby 40 Acres and a Mule Gallery may be more conducive to live commentary. Note: There will be a $4 donation requested at the Guild.

A Touch A’ Class - Located at 4217 Stockton Boulevard, just south of 14th Avenue, this classic African American bar is a social center, and again, where better to be on this historic day?

Start time: 2:30 p.m.

Bridges on the River starts its celebrations mid-afternoon, but it should go on long after that. The bar will be offering drink and food specials, and they’re encouraging everyone to wear their Obama gear. At 2125 Garden Highway, this place is likely to be the prettiest and sunniest place to celebrate a new administration.

Start time; 4 p.m.

Revolution Wines, Sacramento’s premier “urban winery” will open its midtown location to Obama fans at 4 p.m., offering the first glass of wine for only 44 cents, in honor of our 44th President.

Am I the only one?

Okay. So I know what I am about to write may not have anything to do with Southside Park, or downtown. I don’t have a story about flooding on 9th and J Street, nor can I write about an old abandoned building that is scheduled for demolition in a few days time. I can, however, right about something that is truly going to affect everyone in this town and towns all across this nation.

On Tuesday, November 4, 2008, millions of people will exercise the “hard-fought-for” right to vote for the President of the United States. I can’t control the excitement I feel inside. I have voted for a president four times in my life and only one of my guys won (two consecutive terms). This time, I might be in for a real treat.

Am I the only one who is so excited about this election, that I think it should be a national holiday? Am I the only one who thinks this is the single, most, important election of my lifetime? Am I the only one asking myself, “Angela, when have you ever looked at poll numbers and speeches and political debates with such obsessive vigor in your life?

One day, driving home from work, I was listening to 103.5 The Bomb on the radio. The DJ was asking for people to call in and express whether voting truly makes a difference. A young woman called in and said, “Voting doesn’t make a difference, ‘cause politicians are going to do what they want anyway (paraphrasing).” She went on to admit, “that’s why she [isn’t] voting.”

My 75-year-old, stepfather grew up in Mobile, Alabama during the Jim Crow era, where black people couldn’t walk on the same sidewalk as white people. He couldn’t go to the same schools, or drink out of the same faucets. He couldn’t look a white person in the eye if he was walking on the same dirt road. He was called “boy” up into his late 20’s. These things are tangible for me. This isn’t ancient history.

I know we’ve all heard stories like this before, but to think these things happened to not just one, but many of family members and friends, who are still alive, makes me think how fortunate I am to have the right to vote. My family makes it that much more necessary to be a believer in the voting system and not a cynic like that caller on the radio.

So, am I the only one who is super, fantastically, crazy excited about this election
? No!

Oh! And, on election night, if you happen to see people partying in the street like it’s New Year’s 2000, all over again, you’ll know why.
