Expect horns blowing and savory sauces simmering at the Spaghetti Feed fundraiser for the Citrus Heights Community Marching Band (CHCMB) this Saturday. Band members are hoping for a full house at their main fundraising event for the year. The Spaghetti Feed will be held on March 24 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Citrus Heights Community Center. Entertainment will be provided by the CHCMB and by the Golden State Accordion Club. The event will also include a silent raffle with over 70 items donated by local businesses and community members. Epitomizing community spirit, the band embraces players of all playing levels and ages and performs at public events throughout the Sacramento region. In 201
Early Sunday morning, over 4,000 runners from around the world participated in the California International Marathon, a 26.2-mile race from Folsom to downtown Sacramento. As the runners scaled the greater Sacramento area into the afternoon, hundreds of supporters lined the route carrying signs of support and yelling words of encouragement. Meadow Bailey, a 34-year-old homemaker from Rancho Cordova, was one of the many who came out to show their support. She said that although this was her first time coming, she had an enjoyable experience. “Everybody is cheering, and there’s a great sense of unity,” she said. Starting near Folsom Lake, participants headed east down Oak Avenue. Passing t
In early 2001, Larry Olson got his first taste of the music industry when friend, Jeremiah Ferguson, asked Larry to book some shows for his band, Race Train Schizo. After a short while Larry became the band's manager. "It's funny, I never had any interest in the music industry before I met Jeremiah. I loved music, I had my favorite bands, but looking back on it now, I don't think I ever heard music before I met Jeremiah. I always listened to it, but I don't think I ever heard it." In April of 2006, Larry established Savage Ear Entertainment as an artist management and booking company for long time friend Jake Ferguson and his band, The Grumpy. Booking shows for the band in Southern Califo
California Family Fitness has partnered with Sport Chalet to participate in a shoe drive to benefit the tsunami victims in Japan. All shoes that are donated will be sent directly to Soles4Souls for distribution to the Japanese people. “We highly encourage everyone in the community to donate at least one pair of shoes,” said Randy Karr, President of California Family Fitness. “It is devastating to see how the tsunami and earthquake in Japan has affected so many, which is why we have partnered with Sport Chalet in Soles4Souls to lend a helping hand and make a difference.” To donate to this very worthy cause, people can drop off gently worn shoes at either Sport Chalet or a California Famil
There’s something unusual happening at the Orangevale Recreation and Park District. It’s not ballet classes or a magic show—although those things are happening. It’s something that has grown behind the scenes and yet is a key part of the parks we enjoy. For almost 13 years, Orangevale parks have benefitted from a crew that does everything from waxing the slide at the pool, to chalking the baseball diamond. What’s unique about this crew is that it consists of three individuals who have a range of developmental disabilities. You might not normally think that people with developmental disabilities would be shredding almond branches through a wood chipper, or driving giant lawn mowers across
There is Lady Gaga and Miley Cyrus pop, and there is Rooney pop. It was nice to see the Rooney kind on Wednesday night at the Boardwalk in Orangevale. Both Rooney and one of their support bands on this tour, The Young Veins, have a throwback pop sound that isn't so common these days. As someone who grew up with Weezer, I was definitely looking forward to seeing Rooney for the first time. The Young Veins were a great opener (the other support bands were local band Flatlin, and Black Gold, from Brooklyn). The 'Veins are compromised of two former members of Panic! at the Disco and are touring in support of their first release Take a Vacation! If The Byrds and The Beatles had a baby, their
SACRAMENTO – More than 10,000 members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and their friends will descend on parks throughout the Sacramento region Saturday, May 8, to perform necessary work from clean-up and general maintenance to painting, planting trees and even construction jobs. Under the banner of Mormon Helping Hands, an international program of the Church that has provided manpower in distressed communities and organized relief efforts after natural disasters, the volunteers have chosen parks in their own communities to perform work in state, regional and city parks that have been hit hard by the recent downturn in the economy. The Sacramento effort is part of a stat
In the westernmost corner of Orange County, California, you will find the seaside city of Seal Beach. It's a small surfing community of about maybe 25,000 these days. Women outnumber men. It's predominantly white, middle class, conservative - State Senator Tom Harman, Assemblyman Jim Silva, and Congressman Dana Rohrabacher are all Republicans. It's also home to the iconic Harbour Surfboards. But this isn't about Ray Bay, the warm waters of the mouth of the San Gabriel River, or any sort of banter from a Tea Party trio. This is about culture; this is about music; and this is about the euphoria-inducing sound of the Rx Bandits. This quixotic quartet has been around since 1995 (1991 if

Sacramento Metro Firefighters extinguished an early morning blaze before it reached several threatened homes. Shortly after 12:00 a.m. Thursday morning, Sacramento Metropolitan Fire Department was called to a grass fire to rear of 3600 Glencrest Lane. When firefighters arrived, and were able to access the fire ground, it appeared that there were actually three fires. Several additional grass and structure engines were dispatched to protect the homes. When asked if this was indeed three separate fires and was this possibly arson, on scene arson investigators stated that it was under investigation. Battalion Chief, Frank Moreno (Bat 15), stressed that it is very important that reside
