Wadlin speaks on balanced living at California Writers Club

The first Friday of every month, the Sacramento Branch of the California Writers Club gathers for development opportunities, social interaction and solidarity among area writers. This past Friday, June 3, a group of 25 writers hosted Dr. Caroline Wadlin, a local, award winning physician specializing in women’s health and holistic medicine. Wadlin’s recently published book, “A Woman’s Guide to Balancing Life in Today’s Fast Paced World,” is dedicated to all women: “May you be blessed with more energy, less stress and more fun.” Her compact guide to balancing life includes tips on how to reorganize your priorities so that you can lead a happier life. “It’s not selfish to do that,” Wadlin

SAYS provides speaking platform for area youth

Young poets from all over the world gathered in Los Angeles this year to compete at the Brave New Voices event. Among them were members of the arts-based literacy program SAYS (Sacramento Area Youth Speaks), who placed fifth in the youth poetry event – an international spoken-word contest televised on HBO. After observing both the peril and potential of the educational system, former Bay Area high school teacher Vajra Watson founded SAYS in partnership with the UC Davis School of Education, and the Twin Rivers, Sacramento City and Elk Grove UnifiedSchool districts, the Sacramento Office of Youth Development and the Sierra Health Foundation in January 2009. SAYS and Watson now advocate fo

"Hot Poetry" features Keely Sadira Dorran

For the second month in a row, Sacramento Poetry Center's summertime reading "Hot Poetry in the Park" had to relocate from Freemont Park back to their headquarters on the corner of 25th and R streets. For May's reading, the move indoors was due to poor weather, but technical difficulties and transportation were at fault this time. Even with the last-minute change of plans, the event still showcased incredible talent to an eager audience. The night was hosted by Trina Drotar, the new managing editor of SPC's literary magazine, "Poetry Now." Featured reader was local poet Keely Sadira Dorran. Dorran has played an integral role in the poetry community in Sacramento for more than 15 years bu

So You Think You Can...Joke?

Hey Mr. Comedy Guy, I think I am pretty funny. I would like to try my hand at stand up comedy. Where can I go as a beginner? -Richard "I know I am funnier than you" Joaks Thank you for this week's question Dick, this is a nice segue into the world of Comedy Showcases and Open Mics. I am glad to answer your question as it is asked of me often. First, let's define the difference between these two types of shows because even though they are often done at the same time, they really are different. A comedy open mic means that anyone who has a mind to, can come to the venue, register about an hour or so in advance (it is usually on a first-come, first-served basis), then go up on stage and do

Meet the Evil Do-Gooders!

I first ran into the local two-man show, The Evil Do-Gooders, at an Open Mic event at Fox and Goose. To be a little more accurate, my first encounter with band members Ryan and Ruben happened on my way out the door. Let me explain. If you haven't been yet, Monday nights attract a lively round-up of diverse local musicians playing everything from blues and folk to acoustic rock. On this particular Monday, my crew and I were about ready to call it a night at the wee hour of 10 p.m., until two guys with guitars called out for our attention. After watching reporters from The Sacramento Press talk to virtually everyone who played that night, they didn't want to be forgotten about simply becau
