Recently, I tuned in to the Millionaire Matchmaker Valentine special. I can’t say I heard anything revelatory, but one thing surprised me: Patti Stanger thinks online dating sites are the best place to meet your match. Surprising, coming from a matchmaker. And yet, not. I’ve been to a few bars lately, and all I see are couples--and not a lot of those—giggling girls, and men swigging solo who look as though they could tell you more about the bartender than themselves—and would! Not promising. Last time I was actively engaged in barhopping for Mr. Right, the bars were, in fact, hopping. It was the 80s, and you could sign a deal, score a gram, or scribble your number on a napkin—and the

Anyone in the city can use the city’s online tools to carve up the eight City Council districts and present their redistricting ideas to city leaders. The mapmaking tool for the 2011 redistricting process is free to use, and the city welcomes maps from residents. Maps developed and submitted by citizens will be shared with the City Council, the council’s redistricting advisory committee and the general public, said Maria MacGunigal, the city’s Geographic Information Systems manager. Every decade, the city rearranges its council districts by applying U.S. Census data. The reordered districts should all have the same population, according to city staff. “The primary objective of redistric
The current fear goes something like this: "If the newspapers disappear, so does all the real original reporting with it." The basic charge is that there is no business model for "giving away" news online, because online revenue is too miniscule and newspapers spend an enormous amount to get us that amazing original content. The trouble is that a lot of those assumptions are just plain false. Once you start delving into the numbers those assumptions begin to wash away. For instance, what does an average major daily pay, in terms of a percentage of its overall budget, for its editorial department? While one's inclination may be to assume that it is a huge portion, the reality is that the
