Sacramento hosts inaugural Bacon Fest

Local musician Brian Guido and Nick Miller, Managing Editor for Sacramento News & Review, have joined forces with five local restaurants to put together the first Sacramento Bacon Fest, held from Jan. 20 - 22. Guido said he got inspiration from reading about similar events in Des Moines and Chicago and decided that Sacramento needed something where local chefs can get together and showcase their talent to the community. “This is the place I call home,” Guido, who moved to Sacramento in 1992, said. “I felt that this city was just as good of a place to have an event like this, given the talented chefs that we have here.” Guido said that he approached Miller, who he has known for eight yea

Panelists offer tips for writing reviews at Sac Press workshop

“The most important part of review writing is to tell a story,” said Nick Miller, associate editor at Sacramento News & Review and panelist at Wednesday evening’s review writing workshop, hosted by The Sacramento Press. You should make your reader feel as though they were at the event by including specific details about what you saw, he added. Along with Miller, the workshop’s other two panelists, Rachel Leibrock of Sacramento News & Review and Carla Meyer of The Sacramento Bee, spoke from personal experience about how to effectively write a review of music, food or film. With Concerts in the Park kicking off Friday and the California Music Circus season around the corner, there will be lots of opportunities to review shows, both indoors and outdoors. We've organized a media panel Dec. 9. and a Google workshop Dec. 15. The media panel is a collaboration between the folks at the Urban Hive and The Sacramento Press.
