A year's activity on K Street

The downtown portion of K Street saw a lot of activity in 2010, from streetscape improvements to community debate over the redevelopment of troubled portions and the construction of new nightlife venues. At the beginning of the year, portions of K Street were still torn up from the previous year’s streetscape improvement project. A Sacramento Press article from February covered the ongoing improvements, which have since been completed. By late March, the city was discussing the next step in the process and considering four proposals for the 700 and 800 blocks of the street. Sacramento development in 2010

Development in Sacramento suffered some significant setbacks in 2010. But there were modest moves forward as well, making for a mixed picture heading into 2011. The focus was on five major projects, which included: 1. The Railyards A suburban Chicago real estate investment firm, the Inland Real Estate Group of Companies, took ownership of most of Sacramento's historic downtown railyards in a courthouse foreclosure auction held in October. Inland foreclosed on the 203-acre Railyards site after then-owner Thomas Enterprises defaulted on nearly $194 million in loans in June. The two sides had been negotiating on a loan extension for several months but failed to agree on terms. Since October

City officials

The past year was a big one for resignations, promotions and elections of Sacramento city officials. Twelve personnel changes took place at City Hall involving elected and appointed leaders and city staffers in 2010. A major change was in the city manager position, which was replete with drama and press conferences. When former City Manager Ray Kerridge resigned in March, the city was wrestling with a host of issues. The Sacramento County Grand Jury had released a report in January saying the city may have broken state law Proposition 218. Utilities fees from ratepayers must correspond to the costs of delivering the utilities services, the law states.  At the same time, the city was dea

2010 a landmark year for Crocker Art Museum

With the opening of the Crocker Art Museum’s $100 million expansion and the celebration of it’s 125th anniversary, 2010 was a big year for the museum. “I think it’s probably the most important year in the museum’s history,” Museum Director Lial Jones said. The Oct. 10 opening of the Crocker’s new wing capped a decade of work that Jones said marks the beginning of the next phase in the Crocker’s history as the museum moves forward to ensure it continues to matter and stay relevant to Sacramento. In May, The Sacramento Press reported on what the Crocker’s 125,000-square-foot expansion would entail and announced that the museum would be closed to the public from June 6 to Oct. 10. On May

from Greenwise outcome expected in January

I applaud the mayor's Greenwise push but the true celebrities of this initiative are the regular folks who will make it work...

City, county faced grim year

Sacramento’s city and county governments confronted grim budget situations throughout 2010. The city faced a $43 million budget gap, while the county struggled with a $181 million hole. Local government employees felt the pain of budget cuts: Sacramento County laid off about 380 employees during the summer. The county also slashed 29 positions in its engineering department in September. The county will no longer hire engineers for those spots. City officials laid off 12 workers represented by Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 447, city spokeswoman Amy Williams said in September. The layoffs occurred after talks between the city and the union failed. However, the city’s job loss situation

Homelessness a key issue in 2010

With the city and county of Sacramento still in the depths of recession, 2010 saw a focus on homelessness as services were cut and unemployment was at 13 percent. An ongoing issue with Sacramento’s homeless that was still not seeing notable progress even as the year ended was the Safe Ground movement, which seeks to find designated spots in the city for homeless to camp. In April, about 50 people spoke at City Hall advocating for Safe Ground Sacramento. They were still at it in July, and they remained a presence at Tuesday night City Council meetings. In a controversial move, the City Council changed its public comment portion from the beginning of the meetings to the end, which many s
