After a brief hiatus, Kidaround, an edgy local mom's magazine, will start publishing again this summer under new leadership. Founder Barb Hennelly is passing the reins to columnist Kara Turner – who plans to expand the print magazine created by moms for moms. Hennelly put out the magazine solo for five years. She recruited moms like herself to contribute stories and photos and do copy editing and bookkeeping. As publisher, editor and chief graphic designer, she handled all the logistics to put issues together. She also sold ads and managed the business end of the magazine. The swaps are for local eco-minded parents to get together and recycle (exchange) their kid’s stuff (ages 0-14 and maternity). After the swaps, I donate the leftovers to local charities and needy families. It was as appealing in a tired mother’s hand as a latte and as likely to induce a welcome perk. Yes, you read that last line correctly, it was. Barbara Hennelly announced on Facebook last month that the November/December 2010 issue of Kidaround would be her last. After publishing the bimonthly magazine for five years, Hennelly decided that the financial stress finally was too much. The magazine was profitable, but cash flowed too slowly. Moms and children strode in fashionable attire on a pink and white striped runway last Friday to raise funds for the Sacramento Children’s Museum. A couple hundred people gathered at 33rd St. Bistro in Midtown to support the fundraiser for the museum that begins demolition today. Ten dollar tickets benefited the museum directly. Sponsors Koukla Kids Boutique, M.E. Boutique, Firefly Salon and Boutique and 33rd St. Bistro began planning the event only three weeks ago.
