A beloved Louisiana Catahoula leopard dog with inquisitive amber eyes and a finicky palate has inspired the central city's newest specialty pet store. Caitlyn Shortt, 25, and 26-year-old MDavid Low opened Nerdy Dogs April 7 on the first floor of their live-work loft at 1118 19th St. in Midtown. The store offers food, treats, eco-conscious toys and other products for dogs and cats. Shortt and Low have lived in Sacramento for just a year, after Low got a job as a senior producer at the digital ad agency BKWLD ("Buck Wild"). They met in Hood River, Ore., where they grew up. The dog who motivated them to open the business was a rescue adopted from the Portland Humane Society. At the time,
This month’s Second Saturday was very busy and it appeared that with new regulations the crowds seemed larger than ever. The weather had a lot to do with this perceived observation as well as police presence throughout Midtown. The Saturday Midtown Bazaar moved outdoors across the street from its regular home on I and 16th. DJ Will played some oldies and goodies just outside the regular Midtown Bazaar garage building. Inside the building Amber Villegas’ completed mural could be seen as well as the mural being worked on by some of her students. After grabbing a bite at the Mini Burger Truck we moved on to view some art at the Brick Alley Art Studios. In and around the studio artists wor
A warm Saturday evening brought more people out to experience a night full of art, music, culture and socializing during February’s Second Saturday. In the next couple of months, as the weather gets warmer and it stays lighter during the early evening, more people will be attending Second Saturday. I passed by the Midtown Bazaar on I Street (between 16 and 17th Streets) and noticed that more vendors are setting up stations. I went there to see a couple of murals. One of the murals is in the process of being painted while another has been completed. Amber Villegas has a finished mural on the right hand side wall as you enter from I Street. Another mural on the back wall directly across fro

Midtown might be missing the MARRS ice skating rink from last year, but it will catch a bargain with Winter Rollerland starting Friday night at the Midtown Bazaar's indoor location. Three weeks ago realtor Sabrina Berhane and her associates decided to put together a roller skating rink where the community can enjoy the nostalgia of skating to 80's pop and the glint of a disco ball. So they threw a couple dozen hay bails in a circle, wrapped some faux-snow and tinsel around the parking garage columns, and are hoping for at least 10,000 people to skate through by New Years weekend. Berhane organizes the Midtown Bazaar and is hoping the roller rink will provide some entertainment in the co

As daylight decreases during the day and temperatures drop during the night it begins to take its toll on the Second Saturday events. This past Second Saturday there was a drop in people attending art shows and music events. Once rainy weather comes upon us even less people will be out on Second Saturdays in Sacramento. Second Saturday in Folsom has seen similar drops in attendance. Cities where Third Saturdays are held will probably also see less people come out at night. Midtown sees the most people during its Second Saturday events and some have begun to go indoors. This will help with the cold weather and rain. One of these vendor events is the Midtown Bazaar that’s held on I Street
A concept to develop a restaurant row that spills out onto a Midtown Sacramento alley has frozen in its tracks. Not someone who gives up easily, developer Aaron Zeff took a step toward the alley's future use by launching a new Saturday morning event, the Midtown Bazaar, last weekend. Zeff has been talking with city officials and prospective restaurant owners about creating an upscale culinary corridor on a Midtown alley near Memorial Auditorium. But that plan — one of three pilot alley projects announced last August — is not moving forward because financing and tenants are not yet available, Zeff said. "Restaurant row is on a holding pattern, like most other retail businesses," he said.
A marketplace of colorful stalls will take over one of Sacramento's busiest corners Saturday. Like an oasis in a concrete desert, a new public market called the Midtown Bazaar will spring up on a parking lot at 16th and J streets — across from the Memorial Auditorium and P.F. Chang's China Bistro — and flow through an alley into a cavernous old building for a few hours each week. At least 75 local vendors offering art and other goods have already signed up for the grand opening, to be held from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. With an indoor location measuring 25,600 feet, the market will be held year-round. The old garage at 1630 I St. sports old timber trusses, a mezzanine and roll-up doors in back th
