Brown and Whitman clash at UC Davis debate

Anyone looking for a clean kill in tonight’s gubernatorial debate between Jerry Brown and Meg Whitman probably walked away a little disappointed. If you were hoping for another Jan Brewer moment in which a candidate seems to simply and completely lose it on camera, again, disappointment reigns. But if you were looking for a reasonably thoughtful discussion of many of the real issues facing California, there was much to appreciate in the debate staged at the Mondavi Center at University of California, Davis. Three local journalists – Amy Chance of the Sacramento Bee, Marianne Russ of Capital Public Radio and Kevin Riggs of KCRA Channel 3 – led the candidates through ten questions ranging f

Downtown Rally against Whitman

As billionaire Republican candidate Meg Whitman attends an exclusive $25,000 per plate fundraiser in her honor in the Elks Building, California workers and families rallied  in front of that building tonight to declare they won’t let Meg bring her Wall Street agenda to the Governor’s office. Workers walked with Stop Wall Street Whitman protest signs along J and 11th Streets chanting "Wall Street Whitman's gotta go." "Meg Whitman is not having a real conversation with the voters about the types of policy proposals she would instill as the Governor of California," says Steve Smith, spokesperson for California Labor Federation. "She's not talking to the media, she's not talking to the work

Party chairmen prime the press for November election

The lunch was hosted by the Sacramento Press Club and was attended by members of the working press, state politics, and public. Republican Party Chairman Ron Nehring and Democratic Party Chairman John Burton spoke mainly on the gubernatorial and senate elections, claiming that in the coming months it will become increasingly clear why either party has the better candidate. Among the issues addressed was that of campaign financing. With Meg Whitman's campaign likely to spend hundreds of millions of doll

City Council Candidates Use Facebook to Connect With Community

On June 8, Sacramento residents will have the opportunity to cast their votes on a number of issues and elective offices, including party primaries for governor and attorney general as well as Sacramento City Council seats in districts 1, 3, 5 and 7. Steve Poizner's "Mount Pleasant" is a bestseller...

Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner's book"'Mount Pleasant" has hit the New York Times Bestseller list today, all but beating out his rival for California's coveted Gov. seat, Meg Whitman and her book "The Power of Many". Last night Poizner spent two hours with potential consitutuents at the Borders bookstore on Fair Oaks Blvd., signing autographed copies of his book, posing for pictures, and fielding questions from some folks who are still decidedly on the fence with regards to his candidacy. Poizner handled himself gracefully under fire, and with poise(pun intended). He was clear and concise, stating matter of factly what he envisions for the state and what his stance is on many of Cal
