The Niello Concours at the Capitol took place across on the street facing the State Capitol west steps on Saturday, April 30, 2011. The show benefitted the 2011 March of Dimes, March for Babies walk. A large gathering came together at the west steps of the Capitol and dozens of informational and vendor booths were on hand to disseminate educational and informational materials for the March of Dimes.

The 2011 Concours d'Elegance, held at the State Capitol saw a gathering of motor cars, auto enthusiasts, walk participants and the general public to this all ages event. Niello and the Premier Concours Promotions participated in this year’s March for Babies walk which is the longest-running and most widely recognized walking event in the nation. This walk has generated more than $1.5 billion for the March of Dimes over its 41-year history.

This 2011 Concours inaugural event showcased dozens of collectible and luxury vehicles from many exotic car collectors in northern California. Prizes were awarded at the end of the exhibition for the Best of Show Competition. For this event, Best of Show was awarded to the entrant who raised the most money for March of Dimes.

The Niello Company joined forces with Premier Concours Promotions, producers of Niello Concours at Serrano. Several of the vehicles showcased were owned by the Niello Company including a 1959 Porsche Convertible D, a 1948 Cadillac Convertible, and a 1935 Packard Convertible as well as other classic and new vehicles. As it was said, the real winner of this competition was the March of Dimes.

March for Babies gives hope to the more than half a million babies born too soon each year. Money raised by hundreds of walkers at the Capitol supports programs in our communities and helps moms have healthy, full-term pregnancies. Many volunteers and staff were on hand to encourage and support the walkers. Volunteers, sponsors and entertainers created a fun and rewarding atmosphere and most of the participants enjoyed great weather and great company for this worthwhile event.

Michele Moore, Marketing Director Niello Concours at Serrano, was on hand to talk with vehicle owners and guests. Michele feverishly worked to coordinate the event and could be seen talking to the showcase automobile owners, March of Dimes coordinators, event photographers and guests.

Awards were given to participants of the Niello Concours Capitol. Michelle started off by announcing the winners saying, “We’re so thrilled to be here today. We’ve had so much fun with the Niello Concours Capitol. I would like to give out the award for the Ambassador Family for March of Dimes 2011. The Studder family chose their favorite car and they chose a 1935 REO Speed Wagon Pickup, Mr. Van Steyn is the winner.” Michele asked Pete Van Steyn to say a few words, “It’s an honor to be here and to have a 1935 REO, there’s only 4 or 5 in the world.” said Van Steyn indicating that it took him 4-5 years to remodel.

“Now for our Best of Show award we are very excited because we came up the idea that whichever entrant in the show raised the most money on behalf of their car would win best of show. We are so excited because the gentleman that won is a March of Dimes baby. He was born with polio and he was helped by March of Dimes for 14 years and I’m proud to announce that Geoffrey Horton with a 1955 Jaguar XK 140 won.”

Mr. Horton came up to the microphone saying, “I’ll like to thank the March of Dimes the Niello family and Brian and Michele for putting on a great event and for helping my family years ago.” He gave heartfelt thanks.

Rick Niello also came to the microphone to say, “On behalf of the Niello family I’ll like to thank you very much for attending and I’d like to thank the winners. It was a very special day, thank you.

Michele ended by saying “Thank you for making this inaugural event so great we love your enthusiasm so we hope to see you next year and we’ll have more cars. Thank you so much.”

The Ryan Hernandez Band who had been playing prior to the Niello Concours at the Capital winners were announced came back to the stage to continue playing. They played great covers songs and for a while dancers moved in front of the stage as the music played on.

Volunteers soon began to clean up and put equipment away. They were very well organized and March of Dimes and Niello Concours were lucky to have such great and enthusiastic volunteers on hand.

Premier Concours Promotions presents several Concours d'Elegance events throughout the year. The 8th annual Niello Concours at Serrano will be held on Sunday, October 2 this year. Log on to their website to see other Concours events.

"Oh god, this is gonna be a long night," said radio personality Jack Armstrong as he and Joe Getty kicked off the 11th annual Best of Sacramento party on Thursday.

The party, a benefit for the March of Dimes, was full of Sacramento Magazine's notion of the best of what Sacramento has to offer, everything from food and drinks to local media and entertainment.

"It's really a huge honor, it's a reflection of the station I work for," said 'Best TV Reporter Team' winner Edie Lambert. "It's a big compliment to quality journalism."

Booths filled the Convention Center, and lines wrapped around the exhibit hall as attendees took full advantage of the free food, services and other goodies.

Express Event Imaging and Sacramento News & Review offered free photographs gracing the covers of Sacramento Magazine and SN&R, Hoshall's Salon and Spa's fashion show featured dramatic hair, makeup and clothes, and KCRA 3's news team --Walt Gray, Mark Finan, Mike TeSelle, Kelly Brothers, Del Rodgers, Eileen Javora and Adrienne Bankert -- posed for pictures with attendees. The team also swept the media category.

"I heard this was the place to be," said first-time attendee Scott Wood. "I could joke and say there should be more free booze, but I think there's plenty."

Booths hawked products and services while providing freebies that ranged from body waxing to information from the zoo on the difference between apes and monkeys.

"We're glad to be here to let people know that the zoo isn't just for kids, even though we were voted 'best place to take the kids'," said Sacramento Zoo employee Lara Kirkendall.

The event raises money for the March of Dimes, devoted to the safety and care of infants.

"We raised $400,000 for March of Dimes, we had more sponsors than ever before. We are now up to $3.4 million for the charity," said Joe Chiodo, publisher of Sacramento Magazine. "This is our best year yet."

Dozens of attendees bid on silent auction items, the main source of donations.

"We came to support the March of Dimes, we're making our way to the auction tables," said Stephanie Thompson, attending for the first time. "They also have excellent sushi from Sapporo Grill and the atmosphere is great."

There will be a silent auction featuring prizes donated by local businesses and supporting breweries.
This event is not only another chance to taste amazing guest beers but both the event and silent auction benefit W.E.A.V.E. A representative will be present at both events to take donations for their Safe House and answer questions about their organization. All proceeds from the day are donated to W.E.A.V.E.

This event will once again be held at the West Steps of the State Capital building. The route will take you on a stroll through the beautiful, tree-lined streets of downtown and mid-town Sacramento. You have a choice of a 5k or 10k route. Meet new friends on our party route and then celebrate with old friends at the finish line while we walk, give and volunteer to create a world free of MS. The April 26th Sacramento Walk MS promises to be bigger and better than ever. Join us for fantastic food and fun finish-line festivities all while enjoying live music from On Air, a local band, another amazing performance by Jodette’s Belly Dancers and the Ben Ali Shrine Clowns. Benefitting: The Salvation Army Playground at the Roy Robinson Oak Park Community Center

It all starts with a playground. Three hundred volunteers are needed to join CaliforniaVolunteers, The Salvation Army of Sacramento County, organizers from KaBOOM! and residents of the community to build a new, safe playground at The Salvation Army. The new playground’s design is based on drawings provided by children who attended a “Design Day” event in March. The new playground will provide thousands of children in the community with a safe place to play. Currently, the children have only outdated equipment to play on, which will be removed to make way for the new playground. This playspace project is one of seven sponsored by CaliforniaVolunteers this year to celebrate the legacy of Cesar E. Chavez. Since 2007, CaliforniaVolunteers has sponsored 20 playspace builds constructed by more than 6,000 volunteers and supported 77 after-school service clubs in Title I middle schools across the state. These done-in-a-day play spaces are dramatic, inspirational events that people come back for again and again.
