It was a foot-stomping good time at the Blue Lamp on Saturday, Dec. 17 when a crowd of about 50 gathered together to seek refuge from the cold and watch local musicians Alex Dorame, Whiskey and Stitches and City of Vain perform. And what better way to fight the cold than dancing, right?

But, there was another reason to celebrate: Rick Barton, the original guitarist from Dropkick Murphys was there with his new band, Continental.

Dorame was the first to get on stage, and he played an acoustic set for the intimate crowd.

Continental drummer Tommy Mazalewski was impressed with Dorame’s acoustic set.

“Sometimes I get a little uneasy with an acoustic guitar and a solo gig, but I really liked it,” Mazalewski said.Whiskey and Stitches, who describe their sound as “non-traditional traditional Irish American flavored rock and roll goodness,”have gotten used to their label as a punk band.

“We’re surprised we won the Sammies for the best punk band,” said James Wilson, who plays multiple instruments for the band. “We didn’t put ourselves in that category, and we don’t know exactly how that happened, but we appreciate it.”

Wilson, who played the tin whistle, button accordion and the electric and acoustic mandolin, reported that even though he had a little trouble with the mandolin, the sound was great.

Whiskey and Stitches frontman Mike McCarrick added that not only was the sound great, but so were the fans.

“We were on and the fans were fantastic,” McCarrick said.

McCarrick and Wilson agreed that the brotherly love that emanated from them on stage continues while they are off stage, as well.

“We’ve been together for four or five years, so we’re getting to the point where we can pretty much feel each other out,” McCarrick said.Next on stage was City of Vain, a punk band that has only been together for about a year but has already built some fan base. They picked up the pace with faster and heavier punk rock and got the crowd dancing.

Adam Price, who is a Target employee by day and music enthusiast by night, has been a fan of City of Vain since they started, and he had one word to say about their performance.

“They did awesome, awesome.”

Keyboardist Minh Quan has been with the band for about six months, and while he started as a back-up for the guitarist when he broke his band, he is now a permanent fixture.

“We have a good rapport going, and we’re really grateful for that,” Quan said. Finally, Continental returned to the last stage they played in Sacramento, when they were here in 2008. Barton got on stage and in his heavy Boston accent, he asked the crowd, “It’s a great night for rock and roll, right?”

By this time, several of the audience members decided they had enough punk rock for their night and had left the venue, but that didn’t bother Barton at all.

“I wouldn’t care if all of you left, and only (Mike) stayed here,” he said with a laugh.

Barton explained that he loves to create music and he loves to record, but he has never gotten completely comfortable on stage.

“I like writing, I like driving the van, I like hanging out with the guys. My least favorite thing is probably being on the stage,” Barton said. “It’s nerve-wracking because I’ve never been the front of the band. I’m learning more and more.”

Luckily for Barton, his band is his family, literally. Barton plays alongside his son, Stephen, who plays bass. Mazalewski reported that it was actually Stephen who gave his dad the idea to start Continental.

“(Rick) wasn’t interested in starting a full touring band, but he had written all these songs that weren’t like any other songs he wrote before,” Mazalewski said. “(Stephen) told him to put together a band, so that’s what they did.”

Mazalewski joined Continental two years ago and this was his first time playing in Sacramento so he was interested in the variation of music styles.

“I really like the show tonight because it’s all under the umbrella of punk rock, but it’s not just punk rock - it’s a lot of different styles,” Mazalewski said. “We’re out by ourselves for the first time not supporting anyone, and every night we play with different bands. It’s nice to get fresh music.”

In early 2001, Larry Olson got his first taste of the music industry when friend, Jeremiah Ferguson, asked Larry to book some shows for his band, Race Train Schizo. After a short while Larry became the band's manager. "It's funny, I never had any interest in the music industry before I met Jeremiah. I loved music, I had my favorite bands, but looking back on it now, I don't think I ever heard music before I met Jeremiah. I always listened to it, but I don't think I ever heard it."

In April of 2006, Larry established Savage Ear Entertainment as an artist management and booking company for long time friend Jake Ferguson and his band, The Grumpy. Booking shows for the band in Southern California on historic stages like the Whiskey a Go Go nine times, The Roxy Theatre, Viper Room and The Improv in Irvine, Ca. Here in Sacramento, Savage Ear Entertainment booked the band at Arco Arena twice, Raley Field, The Crest Theatre, and The Boardwalk to name a few.

In 2010, Savage Ear Entertainment established itself as a legitimate promotion company when they teamed up with some of Sacramento’s great promoters like Lionheart Entertainment, Big Jay Shows, AmbPirate, and 98Rock's Local Licks host Mark Gilmore to work together to remind everyone the most important aspect of the local music scene are the musicians.

"We have worked very hard to establish ourselves as an honest, hard working ally to the local bands of Sacramento. We’ve been lucky to work with some great national acts, venues and local talent and hope to continue to do so for many years to come."

Disclosure: Larry Olsen is the founder and owner of Savage Ear Entertainment

Fans started gathering at the Dimple Records on Arden Way around 5:00 p.m. in anticipation of Tesla’s latest CD, “Twisted Wires & the acoustic sessions.”

Upon entrance to the store, I heard the latest addition to the family singing - or should I say wailing - away as if he were onstage. Four month old Joe Bob Jeffrey Keith, son of lead singer Jeff Keith, was rockin’ the house just prior to Tesla taking center stage. That boy has a set of lungs to rival his dad’s. It took some time but Joe Bob finally calmed down and let Dad take center stage.

Lori Townsend, a longtime fan, was standing in line with couple Alfred and Shawna Lyon. They were excited to be there and were buying CD’s so each of the band members could sign the covers.

The Band was introduced by Pat Martin from 98 Rock. After a few questions, Tesla performed acoustic versions of “Signs,” “Love Song” and their brand new song “2nd Street.” It was fascinating to see the various cameras and camera phones popping up during the performance.

Their carefree and neighborly demeanor is one reason the band is one of the most loved bands of the 80’s. All the band members were gracious to their fans, shaking hands and talking to them as if they were old friends. In fact, Keith was being rushed over to the signing table, but stopped to take time to have his picture taken with a few fans along the way.

Both young and old were in line. Rick Paige stood in line for about 45 minutes to have his electric guitar signed by the band. Not to be outdone, his daughter Paige followed him with a CD cover.

The new album has a total of 12 songs with six original tracks that were recorded in 2005 at Brian Wheat’s recording studio, J Street Recorders. These recordings were the last with original member Tommy Skeoch who later left the band.

The remaining six tracks were recorded at guitarist Frank Hannon’s studio, including one new song, “Second Street,” and a newly recorded song dating back to their Geffen Record days, “Better Off Without You.” Last year on a nationally televised program, guitarist Frank Hannon stated that the song was a demo for Geffen and that Guns N’ Roses song, “Patience,” was their song note for note.

This CD reinforces the fact that Tesla started the “unplugged” craze back in the 90’s. Their acoustic renditions of lesser known songs such as "Shine Away" and "Caught In A Dream," are refreshing to listen to and have excellent guitar and harmonies. Keith’s vocals have definitely improved with age and remind me more and more of Steven Tyler. However, Keith continues to have a sound all his own, especially when backed by the likes of bassist Brian Wheat, guitarist Frank Hannon, drummer Troy Luccketta and newest member, guitarist Dave Rude.

While some people will be disappointed that there isn’t a lot of “new” material on the CD, the fact that they went out on a limb and recorded lesser known tracks speaks volumes about the band’s confidence and creative ability. Some people might argue that it’s not very creative to do a different version of an old song, but most bands are not willing to go out on a limb and put out songs that didn’t do well in the first place. For that reason alone I say hats off to the band and wish them luck on their upcoming tour and CD sales.

Fans will be pleasantly surprised.

Almost anyone who lives in the Sacramento area is well acquainted with its powerhouse music scene. From the likes of Old Ironsides to the Naked Lounge there is an abundance of venues that specialize in supporting local music.

There are also hundreds of bands, all looking for gigs, fans, and people to buy their t-shirts.

It is an open, mostly friendly social structure with very competitive undertones.

My band has been around and functional since December of 2010. Getting shows has been easier than I thought it would be. Never in a million years would I have guessed that after a few emails we would be playing The Boardwalk in Orangevale.

The Boardwalk, like many other local venues, requires its bands to sell presale tickets. The number of tickets each band sells determines the lineup for the night.
Many local bands have boycotted The Boardwalk for just that reason, calling the system “pay to play”. In vehement Facebook discussions, pay to play has been declared “evil” and “the opposite of rock ‘n’ roll.”

Canvassing the same group of 10 friends every two weeks can be a bit of a chore. It’s one I’m more than willing to do for the opportunity to play a show, but it’s difficult nonetheless.

However, it seems to me that The Boardwalk does not actually force its bands to pay to play. It asks for a certain level of self-promotion, but never have I seen a band turned away because they didn’t sell enough presale tickets.
It’s with that in mind that I think the heinous “pay to play” label is inappropriate. It’s more like “promote yourselves, like you’re supposed to because you are a n00b band and getting anywhere in this industry requires a certain level of hard work. Also, presale is cheaper, hook your family up.”
Although when I mentioned this at the aforementioned Facebook discussion I was called some pretty offensive names.

The point is, as a relatively new band, we’re willing to do some work to play. There’s some work involved, sure, but it’s worth it.

Seeing a lack of regular jazz shows in the central city, Grady O’Bryant sought to fill that void with a weekly series called Jazz on J at Shenanigans bar on J Street.

Jazz on J features a local jazz band every Thursday. The first Jazz on J show was on Feb. 17.

Grady worked with saxophonist Ava Lemert to create Jazz on J, which had its fourth show Thursday. Lemeret performs every week before the featured band.

“Grady and I met up at Shenanigan’s to talk about putting something together,” Lemert said. “He and I are the creators of the series. Grady had the idea that he wanted to put something together. Maybe have something every week.”

Every Thursday, from 6 - 7 p.m., local jazz artist Ava Lemert sings and plays her saxophone. The featured band plays from 7 - 9 p.m., and DJ Rock Bottom spins from 9 p.m. to midnight playing a contemporary jazz mix. Cover charge is $10.

O’Bryant explained his motivation behind starting Jazz on J.

“I worked over the past three years with various jazz bands,” O’Bryant said. “They complained that there’s not enough venues featuring jazz bands.”

O’Bryant also runs Sacramento Wine & Night Life Tours. He said he is planning on combining Jazz on J and the tours.

“I got a little different twist on it,” he said. “We’re bringing wine makers from wine country to Jazz on J, and we’re bringing the jazz bands out to wine country, too.”

The jazz scene has been lacking in Sacramento, Larry Ellis Jr. said. The 36-year veteran jazz pianist has been witness to the scene shrinking and growing for the past three decades. Larry Ellis Jr. and Southwind were featured at Jazz on J on March 3.

“The jazz scene as far as the kind of jazz that I play is really weak in Sacramento,” Ellis said. “Sacramento is notorious for supporting it for a little while and then flaking out.”

Ellis expressed hope and enthusiasm about Jazz on J.

“Jazz on J St. is a rekindling of jazz in Sacramento. It’s an outstanding event – a place for grown folks to go and enjoy themselves,” Ellis said. “They have good-quality music.”

Sabor Jazz was featured on opening night, on Feb. 17. Micheal Otwell plays flute and saxophone in Sabor Jazz.

“Grady is an absolute networking monster,” Otwell said. “He pulled us into the Jazz on J family of all places from Facebook. I never thought I would get a gig through Facebook.”

“The venue’s really good to play at,” Otwell said. “We had a pretty good crowd of about 50 or 60 people. The social media thing was really working for us.”

DJ Rock Bottom (profile on The Sacramento Press here) was asked to perform by O’Bryant to DJ Jazz on J.

“I think it’s great. It’s a good idea. It’s a good thing for the scene,” he said. “Many jazz musicians that don’t have that avenue to expose themselves on a commercial level can get exposure here.

“People don’t have to drive to the bay for it anymore,” he added. “It gives the people that love it the opportunity to see it live every week.”

Bill Meyer plays lead guitar for Innersoul. They were featured during the second week.

“I think it’s a very positive thing, and I’m glad to see the music is coming back to Sacramento,” Meyer said. “I think it’s going to grow.”

Circa Survive, currently opening for Coheed and Cambria, made a pit stop in Sacramento on Thursday. The band took one night off its regular tour to play for more than 200 students and rock enthusiasts at Sacramento State's Union Ballroom.

The standing-room-only crowd was treated to two opening acts, both Sacramento bands. Ksera, which is playing for the Vans Warped Tour in June, played a 30-minute set that eased the audience into the rock that was yet to come.

Next came Mozart Season, playing songs from its upcoming album Nightmares. The group played songs such as "Look, Mom, I'm on TV" and "Saint Peter". As the four band members bobbed their heads in perfect unison, the music in the ballroom got louder and louder.

"We're having an awesome time up here opening for Circa Survive," said Nate Richardson, lead singer of Mozart Season. At the mention of the group, the crowd cheered.

Circa Survive hit the stage 90 minutes after the show began, before a screaming crowd. Lead singer Anthony Green wore a white T-shirt with the word "college" on the front.

"Is it finals week?" he teased. "I don't even know what that means anymore." Much to the crowd's delight, Green gave his expletive-laden thoughts on finals.

Circa Survive played tracks including "Get Out" and "Imaginary Enemy," off of Blue Sky Noise, its third album, which came out last month. The band's Sacramento stop was between shows in San Francisco and Portland.

"Thanks for coming out," said Green, "dancing and singing, being a part of this whole thing even if it was only for a little bit."

The guitar died down and the drums walked the band out, but the crowd wanted more. After five minutes of "one more song," Circa Survive came back for one last tune.

"You guys make us very happy," a smiling Green said. "This song is for all of you; we can't thank you enough" he added, tossing bananas into the crowd. Circa Survive ended with "Living Together" off of the album On Letting Go.

Erica Dal Lago, a Sacramento State student, and Brian Peat, who owns all of Circa Survive's albums, still were pumped up after the show.

"This was just as good as on their album," Peat said. "Anthony Green is amazing on stage."

Of the Sac State venue, Dal Lago said, "I think it's cool. It's small and inexpensive." She called the concert the perfect way to end her last semester.

Circa Survive rejoins Coheed and Cambria in Portland on Friday for the concert series that will run through May 28.

In the past, the annual event has been held at the Crest Theatre, but this year, organizers of the 19th annual fest chose to celebrate in the sun, with art and fashion vendors and a huge inflatable slide.

The mood was celebratory throughout the festival. Children and adults alike splashed in the park’s central fountain as the 14 bands performed on two stages. The beer garden offered shaded areas for the 21 and over to lounge, and everyone stayed hydrated with Green Sol Water.

The various bands hailed from vastly different genres, from indie to country to heavy metal.

Terra Lopez, lead singer of the Outstanding Indie-nominated Sister Crayon, said she was happy for the exposure the event brings

“There are people here who probably would never have heard or seen us if it weren’t for events like this, " she said. "It brings people of different genres together…We played after a metal band. It’s awesome.”

The day concluded with the SAMMIES Award ceremony, where recipients came to the stage to accept their plaques and give brief acceptance speeches.

Members of the Outstanding Singer-Songwriter winner Be Brave Bold Robot paid homage to the late Michael Jackson by singing an a capella version of “Man in the Mirror” upon receiving their award.

The first scheduled concert of Sacramento's 'Concerts in the Park' series may or may not occur tonight depending on the rain, according to concert organizer Jerry Perry.

The bands Sol Peligro, Retrograde Revolution and La Noche Oskura are scheduled tonight to play the first of 15 series lined up for this summer's concerts, held every Friday evening at Cesar Chavez Plaza. If it rains, Perry said the series will begin next Friday, and an extra concert will be scheduled Friday, August 14, to make up for tomorrow’s cancellation.

This is the 18th year that the Downtown Sacramento Partnership has hosted the concerts, which are free and open to all ages.

The plaza is located at 10th and J Streets and lined with food and jewelry vendors during the performances. There is also a beer garden adjacent to the stage. Perry said that depending on the musicians' set times, the concerts typically begin at 5:30 p.m. and end by 8:30 p.m.

Perry, who has been booking local acts ranging in genre from folk, rock, reggae, blues, acoustic, to punk at the concerts for the past 13 years, said he feels really good about the performances scheduled for this year.

“My thing is always trying to introduce new bands…I love all the new bands that are out there,” Perry said. Perry has 29 first-time acts booked to play the concerts for this summer.

Notable returning performers will include the Brodys, Bucho, Mumbo Gumbo and Agent Ribbons, according to Perry.

Also scheduled to play this year is renowned Sacramento rock band Tesla, whose performance was cancelled last year.*

The partnership's Director of Marketing, Lisa Martinez, said that in addition to a variety of new venues participating in the concert pub crawl after the performances, there will also be a number of new vendors selling food during the concerts.

It's a great event because it's free, and you can usually get food and a drink for under $10," said Martinez.

According to Martinez, 4,000 people attend the summer concerts on a weekly basis, and a total of 67,000 attend the concerts annually.

The concert series will continue for 15 consecutive Fridays at the park until August 7 or August 14, depending on whether or not tonight’s show is cancelled.

* Editor's Note:Tesla is not scheduled to play this year, nor did they play last year, but have played previously.
