Spend 4/20 at The Crest Theater With a Late Night Screening of the 420 Triple Feature

Sacramentans will have a very interesting opportunity to celebrate 4/20 at The Crest Theater with a compilation of old Marijuana Propaganda films. 420 is an internationally recognized holiday and daily excuse for Stoners, Pot Heads and even the recreational marijuana user to light up, toke up and blaze a blunt on their way to the euphoric High-Way of mental freedom. Or is it an evil path to mental anguish, despair, desperation, crime and even death? The 420 Triple Feature takes on a trip down memory lane with some of the best, most idiotic, hilarious and downright absurd 'educational' films on the subject of marijuana use. The three films to screened are Drug Addiction (1951), Keep Off th

Keith Lowell Jensen: Comedy with a deadline!

By Amy Serna Keith Lowell Jensen has 21 days and counting. But by the time you read this he will have even less time than that to get strangers to pledge $2,250 for his new project. His new live stand-up comedy CD and DVD called “Cats Made of Rabbits” is a project that will only be funded if he raises that much money before the “expiration date.” But back in the day, before this stand-up comedian, from Sacramento, California was filming a comedy DVD, he found his love for comedy when he worked as a promoter for the Spike and Mike's Festival of Animation. “Mike noticed that I always watched him really carefully when he was MC'ing the shows and so he just shoved me on stage one night an

Why Lie?

Comedian Keith Lowell Jensen wanted to make a film about panhandling. So he did. “It’s very much a comedy,” Jensen said. “There is a lot of humor, but the panhandlers are never the butt of the joke.” The DVD release is on Nov. 4 at 8 p.m. at the Crest Theatre at 1013 K Street. Admission is $15 and a copy of the DVD will be included. “We’ve all heard the urban legend of the panhandler hopping in his nice car and making his way to a comfortable home after a day of begging on the freeway off-ramp,” said Jonathan Morken, producer at Apprehensive Films. Jensen decided to find out just how hard it really is to make money being a panhandler. He spent countless hours employing every imaginable

'Coexist? Comedy Tour' brings comedians and audiences together

The "Coexist? Comedy Tour" is getting some national attention after more than two years of performing at a number of California comedy venues. About 600 people filled The Crest Theatre on Saturday to view a one-night-only performance that was taped live by filmmaker Larry Brand, producer of HBO's Assume the Position with Mr. Wuhl. The Coexist Tour began with an everyday conversation between comedians Keith Lowell Jensen, an athiest, and Tapan Travedi, a Hindu. After speaking about religion, they realized that they were spiritual opposites -- Travedi believes everything is a god, while Jenson believes nothing is a god. They decided making jokes about their religious differences would make

Saturday: 'Coexist? Comedy Tour' at the Crest Theatre

What do a Hindu, Christian, Muslim, Jew, Buddhist and atheist have in common? Besides the fact that they all perform stand-up on the "Coexist? Comedy Tour," they are all from Northern California and have spent time in the same Prius while on the road. Saturday night, the Coexist Tour will stop at the Crest Theatre for a live taping. The show features Tissa Hami (the Muslim), Mike Winfield (the Christian), Tapan Trivedi (the Hindu), Moshe Kasher (the Jew), Keith Lowell Jensen (the atheist) and Sammy Obeid (the Buddhist) performing stand-up about their religious differences. It started a little over two years ago, with a conversation between Jensen and Trivedi about God. Jensen told Trived

Keith Lowell Jensen at the Punch Line

After years in the comedy business, local comic Keith Lowell Jensen is set to release his debut comedy album and is celebrating the career milestone with a CD release show at the Punch Line on Wednesday, Aug. 26. Jensen's other endeavors include a documentary film about panhandling called Why Lie, I Need a Drink, multiple blogs touching on subjects from his inability (or unwillingness) to keep a job to sea monkeys and a book titled The Atheist Survival Guide, due out in November. It seems Jensen has done just about everything but a comedy album. So why is he just getting around to it now? "Well, they say, 'Be in the right place at the right time,' and I guess I just decided to be everypl

Interview: Trash Film Orgy's Co-Producer Christy Savage

Trash Film Orgy Saturdays, Midnight (doors open at 11:30pm), July 8th – August 15th Crest Theatre By Tony Sheppard Capitol Weekly As well known to the veteran loyal fans (many of whom routinely wear zombie makeup) as it is completely unknown to more formal film festival goers, the Trash Film Orgy (TFO) opens its 9th season this Saturday, at midnight at the Crest. Every week of the season, TFO showcases a cult or B-movie offering with audience participation, in the form of competitive loud witty banter during the movie, not just permitted but encouraged. I asked TFO Co-Producer Christy Savage a few questions about the concept and this season’s lineup: Tony: Could you explain the basic c

The 2nd Annual Sacramento All Sketch Comedy Festival

This week, the second annual Sacramento All Sketch Comedy Festival rolls, and roles, into town (see what I did there?). It’s the brainchild (or something less intellectual and less offspringy) of two of Sactown’s most creative and twisted (in a good way, none of that M. Night Shyamalan crap) minds: Sid Heberger and Keith Lowell Jensen. As well as founding the Festival, Sid and Keith are the founders of the local comedy troupe I Can’t Believe It’s Not Comedy (apparently they like to found). Sid is also the manager of the beautiful and historic (and heroic champion of K Street’s economy) Crest Theatre and Keith is a local comedian, filmmaker (Why Lie I Need a Drink), author (The Atheist

Secret Comedy Show at the Java Lounge tonight!

Creators and founders of Sacramento's newest comedy magazine, The Set List , will be holding their first comedy showcase of the year tonight at The Java Lounge.  The show will feature comedians John Ross and Keith Lowell Jensen of the Coexist Comedy Tour, Ray Molina, Chazz Hawkins and Steve Ferris.  Unlike the traditional format you'd see in a club setting, these five comedians will be performing stand up comedy "in the round." Instead of each comic performing an individual timed set, they all share the stage at the same time, weaving in and out of each others' sets at will. This technique was made known by "Oddly Americana," a grouped formed by Molina and Ross in 2007. The show begins
