Sponsors and Vendors sought for 2011 Juneteenth Celebration

Summer is months away but organizers of Solano County’s only free community-wide Juneteenth Celebration are already planning the 23rd annual event scheduled for Saturday, June 18, 2011 from 11-6 at Martin Luther King, Jr. Park in downtown Vallejo. The celebration was recently named one of the top five community events in 2010 by the Vallejo Times-Herald.

The event theme for the historic observance is “Creating healthy communities through education and empowerment.” Organizers say the celebration will focus on self-development and making informed choices by providing access to a variety of community resources and services that help families live better.

“This event is about celebrating the end of slavery in the United States but there’s more to it than that,” said Juneteenth committee president Angela Jones. “Through partnerships with local health care providers, non-profit organizations, educational institutions, small business owners and some major companies, we’re able to connect families from all walks of life with quality health care services, opportunities for educating our children, and the chance to support the local economy which are important ingredients for a healthy, vibrant and sustainable community.”

The celebration will mark the 23rd year that Vallejo has observed Juneteenth. Historians say Juneteenth dates back to June 19, 1865, when the civil Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with the news that the war had ended and the enslaved were now free. The announcement was delivered two and a half years after President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation which had become official on January 1, 1863. African Americans commemorate Juneteenth with a celebration of family, friends, community and freedom.

The celebration is free and open to the public. Organizers estimated 3,000 visitors at the previous event. However, the committee receives no public funds and is seeking charitable contributions and sponsors to help pay expenses. As part of the festivities, the Committee is soliciting vendors for food, craft and specialty sales, non-profit organizations that can provide free helpful information and services, and a variety of other exhibitors. The event will promote education and literacy through an essay contest for students. There will also be live on stage entertainment. Juneteenth: A Celebration of Freedom

This weekend was the 9th Annual Juneteenth: A Celebration of Freedom honoring the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation by President Abraham Lincoln. It marked freedom from slavery for African Americans.

Locally to honor the occasion there was a one-mile run/walk event, a parade, Community Soldier Awards, a talent show, historical re-enactments, a fishing derby for kids and a gospel extravaganza on Sunday.

I spent a couple of hours at Juneteenth on Sunday. Here's some shots of my time there:

These two handsome gentlemen, James Coleman, right and John Banks, manned the George S. "Spanky" Roberts Chapter of the Tuskegee Airmen, Inc. The objectives for the George S. "Spanky" Roberts Chapter of TAI is to cause the community to become more aware of the Tuskegee Airmen story/legacy and let the minority children know that if you can dream it, you can achieve your goals. The raising of money for the chapter's Education Assistance Fund is a major objective.www.taisac.org/index1.html

On January 1, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln issued his official Emancipation Proclamation, which contrary to popular belief did not immediately free a single slave. The President had no power against the Constitution, and the USA was, and still is, governed by the rule of law. However, the Emancipation Proclamation had two effects. First, it disrupted agricultural economies as slaves fled the plantations, and second, it contributed to the collapse of the Confederate states. Without support from the British and French, the Confederacy collapsed on April 9, 1865 when General Robert E. Lee surrendered to General Ulysses S. Grant. The remaining Confederate armies surrendered later in the month. Only five days after the collapse on April 14, President Lincoln was shot and then died the following day.

On June 19, 1865, the Union soldiers led by Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas announcing the war had ended, and all those enslaved were now free! From that moment in Galveston, the observance of June 19th as the African American Emancipation Day had spread across the United States and beyond. Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States.

At long last the rule of law was changed. On December 6, 1865, the 13th Amendment’s completion of ratification prohibiting slavery to the U.S. Bill of Rights was implemented.

Today, Juneteenth’s national celebrations focus on African American freedom while encouraging self-development and respect for all cultures. In recent years, an increasing number of Juneteenth organizations have risen to take their place alongside older organizations with the mission to promote and cultivate knowledge and appreciation of African American history and heritage. As they continue to take on a more national and even global perspective, the events of 1865 in Texas are not only remembered, but celebrated.

Sacramento's Juneteenth festival joined the ranks of other American cities to celebrate, as well as educate the community on one of America's most important acts of legislation, the Emancipation Proclamation. Signed into law in 1863, the Emancipation Proclamation declared that all those enslaved were now free.

It has never occurred to me that Father's Day weekend always happens at the same time as the summer solstice. Is that by coincidence? The longest, sunniest day of the year falls on the weekend that we celebrate our Dad's. That's kind of cool! At least for those of us who celebrate them. Otherwise, think of it as an extended day for you to be having fun! This weekend is packed with family friendly events for the whole family to enjoy at budget friendly prices. There are a few things I've mentioned that are a little more pricey... but they sound so fun! Whatever your budget is and whomever you'd like to spend your time with, check out what this weekend has in store.

When: 6pm (Movie at 8:30pm) ***The festival runs through Sunday, June 28th***
Why: Opening night and reception! You cannot see the film tonight without going to the reception. Enjoy an open wine bar and catered hors d’oeuvres by local restaurants and music by DJ Christophe. The Sacramento French Film Festival is an annual event held in July. It celebrates the present as well as the rich history of French cinema featuring new releases and rarely seen classics. It is the only festival dedicated to French cinema in Northern California and one of only two on the West coast. The Sacramento Bee described the Festival as “the Cinematic Highlight of Sacramento's Summer”. All of the films are in French with English subtitles. (Psst! Why: A Celebration of Freedom and the Emancipation Proclamation. What a way we’ve come! This is a two-day event featuring two stages of live musical entertainment, vendors, children's activities, spelling bee, fishing derby, The Juneteenth Educational Theater, essay/poster contests, theater, cultural dance performances, and more on Saturday! The Juneteenth Talent Show is probably the highlight of the event where local aspiring talent takes a stab at the stage. Nearly 8,000 people attend Juneteenth annually. On Sunday check out the 3rd annual Juneteenth Golf Tournament, the Juneteenth Gospel Extravaganza featuring Sacramento’s best gospel artists, food/ware vendors, and all kinds of children’s’ activities. I don’t know much about the band- and couldn’t find any information on them other than they play at all kinds of family friendly events- but I do know that the Pops in The park Concerts are a great night out for families. Bring your lawn chairs, blankets and picnic baskets and prepare to have some fun!
