Wendy (Kerth) Nugent embraces her brother Rob before Iceland Ice Arena reopened this morning on Del Paso Blvd. It was a happy day for the Kerth family. An arson fire destroyed the historic business ten months ago. The occupancy permit was granted yesterday. Skaters tied on their skates for the first time in ten months in anticipation of hitting the ice once again. Paul Schachder is one of the many volunteers that helped restore Iceland. He says he didn't find out about it until a couple of weeks after the fire. After hearing about the arson blaze in the news, he says he drove by and saw all the people inside with the wheelbarrows cleaning up. "The cleanup was the hard part," he said. "T
Michael Lew and Steve McCarthy, (right in photo), says the game plan is to have Iceland Ice Rink up and running this November without a roof. He says they'll have everything inside that's needed for running the ice rink. He and other workers have been cleaning the charred interior, cutting suspension rods that had kept the walls stable prior to the fire and cleaning the area under the pipes that create the ice. Behind them is the front along Del Paso Blvd. While work is going on inside, the front exterior will have a chalk mural to adorn it, thanks to Angela Casagrande and Jen Cimaglio. A 5 Alarm Fire destroyed a Sacramento Landmark early Sunday morning. At 3:30 A.M. in the morning, the Sacramento Fire Department responded to a report of a vehicle fire endangering a building on Del Paso Blvd. Sacramento Firefighters arrived in about 3 ½ minutes and found heavy fire to the rear of the Iceland Ice Rink at 1430 Del Paso Blvd. Firefighters initially went inside the building and attempted an Offensive Attack, but quickly backed out when they determined the large volume of fire already burning overhead and the truss roof overhead which is a danger for collapse.
