History Museum Offers Free Admission to Military Personnel This Summer!

Railroad Museum Gets in the Jazzy Spirit Memorial Day Weekend!

Railroad museum calls out for summer volunteers

The California State Railroad Museum and Old Sacramento State Historic Park (SHP) are now recruiting adults (18 or older) who are interested in volunteering this summer to help communicate the West’s fascinating heritage of railroading and the California Gold Rush. The volunteer orientation will begin on Saturday, June 23, but interested volunteers must apply and be interviewed in advance. Return of the Fred Mayes Jewelers street clock

The City of Sacramento has returned a completely restored Fred Mayes Jewelers street clock to its home at 10th and J streets. A short event to showcasing the final assembly of the last remaining pieces was held Wednesday, May 2, at 11:30 a.m. The $24,000 project was made possible through historic grants, downtown redevelopment tax increment funds and federal Community Development Block Grant funds available through the Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Agency. No City general funds were spent on the project. Sutter’s Fort Launches Interactive New “Scouts at the Fort” Program

History Museum Celebrates 100 Years of I Street Bridge With Photo Display - 4/28!

In honor of the 100th anniversary of the completion of Sacramento’s I Street bridge, the Sacramento History Museum in Old Sacramento will unveil a special exhibit showcasing photographs of the beloved bridge on Saturday, April 28, 2012.   This Sacramento landmark was built by the Southern Pacific in 1912 with contributions by Sacramento and Yolo counties.  A true engineering accomplishment in its day, this bridge was built to last.  In fact, the first train to cross the bridge did so on April 29, 1912, and train travel on the bridge continues to this day.  The Sacramento History Museum invites the community to visit the photo display and learn more about the history of this enduring land

Railroad Museum to Debut a Whole New Crop of Fruit Crate Art as Phase Two of the Popular “Pick Me!” Exhibit Opens April 10

Due to popular demand, the California State Railroad Museum will debut phase two of a visually-powerful exhibit titled "Pick Me! Fruit Crate Art & the California Dream" on Tuesday, April 10, 2012.  A whole new crop of more than 100 fruit crate art labels from the 1880s through the early 1950s will be on display as part of the second phase of this vibrant exhibit located inside the Museum's restored 1924 Fruit Growers Express Refrigerator Car and along a re-created loading dock/icing station. Cemetery Blooms among the Tombs

Life and death, side by side in an endless cycle. This juxtaposition was evident at Sunday’s tour of the Historic City Cemetery where native plants live and thrive amid decaying tombstones of the long dead. In the first “Blooms among the Tombs” walk, landscape architect and gardener Cassandra Nguyen Musto led visitors through the California Native Plant Society demonstration garden. Her talk highlighted the society’s restoration work bringing native plants and beauty to graveyard plots. Sacramento Intermodal to apply for federal funding grant

In the coming weeks, the City of Sacramento will be applying for a federal grant of discretionary funds called the Transportation Investments Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER IV.) This grant is being applied for with hopes of using the money for rehabilitation and improvements of facilities of the Sacramento Valley Station building. Although constructed in 1926 with expansive light filled spaces and fine architectural details, decades of neglect are evident.
